How to Make a Backyard Artificial Turf Field

It took about 3 months and cost $11,700 in 2012. The end of the video shows how it looks 4 years later in 2016. The reason it costs so much was due to excavation, a retaining wall, lawn pad, a perimeter wood wall and expensive delivery. The turf was a remnant purchased from Tencate for $2,530 which included shipping from Georgia to Kansas. Envirofill ($504) + SofPlay lawn pads ($1,190) were purchased from XGrass. Shipping for those two things were $588. Envirofill is a painted sand product that is less toxic than black crushed tires. The field measures 50' x 30' and uses two pieces of turf with a seam down the middle.

I've added that to the description. The lawn pads are a 1" thick, 4'x8' SofPlay product purchased from XGrass. $19.20 each. These are not necessary if you buy a quality crushed rock and do a good job of compressing it.

We had someone come Out to give us quote and design our yard ... contractor suggested for our space , 15ft*30ft would be good , is that too small for a mini soccer backyard field and just be a waste or is that a decent size for my kids to play. My turf is a high quality product that still looks good after many years of use and extreme temperature changes living in Kansas. It's flattened a bit from normal use, but I also could have added more infill. The turf is also porous, so water drains through it. However, if there is a heavy rain, it's important that you have a small slope so excess water drains away from your house. The only maintenance required for me is to blow off the leaves every so often.

Very cool project. Nicely done. I'd like to do this myself but my concern is that with no drainage the turf must become an absolute swamp after a rain storm. I would assume that those pads stay wet for quite some time

There are holes in the turf and there is a slight slope for water drainage. There has never been a swamp after torrential Kansas rain storms.

Mr. A lawn pad is optional. If you have good compacted gravel, quality turf and infill, you do not need lawn pad.

Video Guy i have compacted the gravel but there is still some that won’t compact and scared it will cause the grass to shift around and possibly get worse overtime so i was curious if the pads would help with shifting and feeling some bumpy-ness from the un compacted rocks

Mr. A the turf is very heavy and is nailed around the perimeter. My turf is not perfectly flat because the gravel was low quality and retained moisture. The lawn pad might have helped, but the pitch is a little bumpy in some areas. It is still a great place to play and better than a grass yard with dirt, mud, rocks, sticks, etc.
