This video is about How to Make a harness for most lizards.
I used 550 parachord which is about 4mm thick from Walmart. Some are thicker than others unfortunately. You can also pull the center out of the cord to make it easier to push through the beads. It doesn't affect how it works for smaller dragons. I wouldn't suggest it for larger reptiles like iguanas.
The pony beads don't work as well with thicker cord so I replaced them with colored wooden beads. I suggest looking for a bead with an 8 mm hole.
I also learned to burn the ends of the cord and mold it while it was still warm to make it easier to push through the hole. It may be easier to use something small to push the second strand through to get it started.

I just tried this on our baby. Hes only 9 inches long head to tail tip. I used a thinner soft thread that comes out of the paracord and it worked really well. Our beardie skittered in the yard without any impediment to his movements. Thanks for the video

this is the easiest and most effective harness diy that i have seen. i tried making my beardies harness with cloth or a sock like in other tutorials and they didn't work right got eawily snagged on his scales and he would easily wiggle outcof them. This is easy and super.cheap to make and works very well and it looks easier to put on. Thsnk you for showing us how to make a proper halter and leash for the little guys.

I almost bought a bearded dragon harness on etsy, until i thought i could maybe make it. I found this video, and it is perfect! My beardie can finally get a little closer to our cats, while being safe! (tip: if you paracord is too thick, and the beads won't fit on it, you can cut out the inside of the paracord and take out the string, if that makes sense :) hope it helps! Again, thanks for this helpful video! Saved me some money.

I'm so glad I found this! I had been on the search for awhile to find a harness for my little dude but I refuse to pay what they want on both Amazon and Etsy. This was such a cost effective, but really nice way to give Nutmeg something to keep him safe when we go out! Normally I look for DIYs but this totally crossed my mind. I have a baby beardie and he always slips out of the ones with like the socks and stuff, but this is super easy and I had both the things you need, it’s more secure and doesn’t hurt his scales, it also doesn’t effect the way he walks like the full body harnesses do. Do you think you could put the legs in first? When Moses gets overly anxious I will either put his feet in first or I will hold him in my hand so that I can hold the harness in place while I put the rest of it on. And I have also had to get someone to hold him while I put it on. But he has gotten used to it so I don't have much trouble anymore. Let me know if these suggestions don't work and we'll keep brainstorming.

hi I love this harness and cant wait to make one what size para cord are you using ? 3mm ?
@pamkidd2577
@pamkidd2577 7 жыл бұрын
Erin, I used 550 paracord which is 4mm. The size of the paracord will depend on how big your lizard is or will get and the size of the beads that you are able to find. The paracord that I bought at Walmart for my personal harness is thicker than the paracord that I bought to use for this video. The purple cord that I used in this video seems to be thinner and easier to fit through the beads. Because a beardie doesn't get very large and doesn't "walk" on the leash then I don't see this being a problem. I would make sure that whatever you use doesn't cut into the lizard. Thank you for your comment.

I’m honestly not understanding how you were able to get the 550 through a pony bead. Even after removing the guts of the cord I still cannot get them on while it is doubled up. Did you use some kind of tool? Or maybe larger pony beads?

Jaselly, that is the only challenge that I had with it. The cord that I use in the video was really thin so it worked well. It doesn’t have to be paracord. The reason I chose paracord is because it won’t cut into the animal since they are small and don’t pull, it will hold up against their scales, it is easy to work with meaning that the harness will slide easily on itself and it will last a long time. Thank you for this video! I actually have a blue tongue skink, and it's really difficult to find any commercially-available harnesses that will work for them, since they have such awkward, stubby little legs. I tried this and it worked much better than the harness I bought for him! He wasn't able to just slip his legs out like he always does with the other one; this one stayed on and it didn't look like it was pinching or uncomfortable. I haven't tried this harness outside yet (too cold right now), but it worked beautifully inside! I feel a lot more comfortable letting him roam around while wearing this since I know he won't be able to dart away from me and get himself stuck somewhere. He's going to be getting a lot more exercise now!

I don't have much experience with geckos but if I had one I would make this harness for it. The only thing I have found it doesn't work on is my blue tongue skink because she just slides right out of it.

Pushing the cord through the beads is the hardest part. I burned the ends of the cord to help it to go through. I believe I also had to use a sharpened pencil. Some cord is thicker than others which makes it hard to gauge. The cord I used in the video is much thinner than the one I used for my beardie. You may have to buy some bigger pony beads. I found some wooden ones at Walmart or Hobby Lobby I believe that worked really great.

Please forgive the VERY late reply!! I didn't realize that my notifications were turned off. I got all of my supplies from Wal-mart but any craft store will work. I would use something a bit larger than 7mm for the center of the bead if you can find it to make it easier to slide the cord through or gut the cord.

The best part is that you don't even have to use paracord - you can use leather cord, silk, make a friendship bracelet cord, maybe weave your own pattern, etc. Also you can bedazzle it, engrave it, bead it, etc. - the possibilities are endless.

Careful with that leather cord. It is probably not a good thing to use as the thin leather layer breaks off very easily. You don't want that around where your beardie may ingest some of it. I bought some of it and trying to get it through the pony bead holes had that outer layer peeling off.

idk how the frig you got this to work, i bought 550 paracord and normal pony beads and no amount of pulling pushing cursing and cussing was ever going to make those pony beads go on that paracord. Undyiing in the interim, I burned the ends of the cord and molded them to fit through the beads. I did have to use the end of a paperclip or something similar to help push it through and then I twisted the bead as I pushed it down. I have to admit that what I used in the video is not true 550 (I learned that after the video).

I used 550 but it doesn't have to be that. What I used in the video wasn't 550. That's what it was labeled but it was not as thick as the parachord I used to make my first leash. I had to burn the ends of the cord and mold it to get it to go into the bead. I also found that wooden beads work best.

I'm not sure how they would get the beads off of it to eat it but I guess all things are possible. My beardie loves being outside. The reality of me losing him if he's not on a leash because they can disappear very quickly in their surroundings is much greater than him somehow getting a bead off of this cord. Thankfully we each have the choice to live life with our critters the way we see fit so enjoy your little one the way it best fits you. :)

What size paracord and beads
@pamkidd2577
@pamkidd2577 Жыл бұрын
Hey, Judy. I at the time of the video I thought I was using a 550 parachord but it is much thinner. I did make mine out of 550 but I had to live up to a larger, wooden pony bead that is used in the video that I bought from a craft store. That is a suggestion. Another suggestion is to take the cotton out of the center of the parachord and just use the exterior. I personally like using the larger pony beads.

@@judyjohnson400 yes, because after you double it and turn 6 inches of it into a harness you will only have an 8.5 foot lead. I will often tether Moses to something outside and let him graze and sun bake. That gives him 8.5 feet to move around. :)

Oh no! I believe I went to Hobby Lobby to get mine. you must have found true 550 paracord. I ended up finding some wooden beads that worked really well. They were the only pony beads I could find with an opening large enough. I believe I bought two other packs before finding the right size. I had a hard time with my first harness as well because the paracord was true 550 paracord. I had to melt the ends of the cord and flatten them then I used something like a pencil to help push it through. It also took me some time to find some beads that would fit over the paracord. I broke a pony bead trying to push the cord through. I did find some wooden beads that worked great though. I found the wooden beads at a craft store. They seemed to expand some while I pushed the cord through.
