How to Make a Beat in ProTools | Part 1 Using Virtual Instruments and MIDI Controller

Welcome back to Dezavi Productions. In this weeks video, I'll show you how to make a beat in ProTools using virtual instruments and a MIDI Controller. We'll go step by step in the process of building a beat from scratch. This includes: changing the tempo, creating instrument tracks, assigning virtual instruments, recording MIDI notes, and quantizing MIDI notes. At the time of this recording, this series was supposed to be only 2 parts. But because I want these videos to be as informative as possible, I decided to make it into 4 parts. In Part 2 of 4, which will be released the following week from this videos release, we'll dig into extending MIDI clips, converting your MIDI to Audio, and separating the sounds of your drum rack into their own tracks.

Hey, Dezavi, I really like your way of teaching and presenting the features of the midi controllers as well as working with virtual instruments. Could you do a video with the Akai MPK Mini working with construction kits (those sample packages that come with drums samples, bass, leads, etc) inside pro tools?

Hi Archaios, thank you so much. Truly means a lot, I appreciate that. For the construction kits, are you talking about the ones that are audio clips that are sometimes loops with a set BPM? Those or like sample kits to load in a drum machine and play on a drum pad? Or both perhaps?

I just don't understand why pro tools ui is so bad? A person with severe necrosis of the brain could use Logic blindfolded, but Avid goes the extra mile to make things difficult.

I don’t understand it either. Personally, my creation process goes from creating the music in Ableton and then doing all the post stuff in ProTools. So I use both.

How to get those plugins? When we select instrument like battery etc? i will see Xpand!2 and Click || thats it.

Having trouble with pro tools when I connect my midi keyboard, can anyone help me please? I have two different instruments tracks piano and strings. My midi keyboard only inputs notes for my piano track but it wont let me use my keyboard to input notes on my string track. I had done it before successfully but I don't understand what i am doing wrong right now. All the notes I enter on my keyboard only work for the piano track but do nothing in string track. How do I switch back and forth for different instrument tracks to use my midi keyboard to input notes? please help

Hey Andy sorry to hear you’re having issues. Just a few things to check before we can dig deeper. Make sure you’re always record enabling the track you’re trying to input notes on. Also, make sure your plug-in is not in “bypass”. What plugins are you using if you don’t mind me asking.

@@DezaviProductions I hit the record enabled button and have even muted the piano track while trying to record my strings track. Also I am using the Xpand!2 plugin for both my paino track and strings track. For some reason pro tools is only reading note input for my keyboard on the piano track while the strings are completely inactive. This is so confusing I don't know what I'm doing wrong

Hi Andy, one thing that could be wrong is that inside Xpand!2, there’s an option to change the MIDI input channel. You’ll see that next to where you can change the instrument/sound there’s a number to the left. Most of the time it should always be on channel 1. But cycle thru the channels and see if you get any sound. Does this help? Let me know.

@@DezaviProductions I tried this before and it wouldn't work on any channel. I fixed it somehow though. I'm not sure how. I just kept changing the input and out put channels in the mixer and in the edit window and something worked lol
