Thank your for a great tutorial! I bought some crushed walnuts on Amazon and on the container it says, “Walnut Shell blast and tumble media”. It’s a 12-20 grit. I’m very happy with it. I loved your story about trying to crush them!😊

Oh, we had a great time. We decided to use the same cloth for each cushion so they would be sister cushions. I watched your twine making EXTRA video to day and darn! I got! Yay Me!!! I made the most beautiful blue and yellow twine ( only about a foot long) I pretty much got only half the length of my original cloth strips. I’m looking for cloth that will work for my purple bottom of the cushion and the printed top to make the cushion ‘s basket. Sister and I went to a thrift store yesterday. We scored! Got several pieces of cloth, I got one silk scarf witch I cut four different pieces I stitched together for or third week project. We stopped at a quilting shop and I found little appliqué pins for $7.00. Everything in that shop was ridiculously priced. Well, if there is something one must have I’m certain they have it. I so appreciate you spending time and labor for all of us. As a child I sewed with my mother and grandmothers. The projects you make for us bring back wonderful memories. THANK YOU!❤

Hi k3n. I love long 'boring' stories on youtube. I watch videos while knitting 'boring' easy knitting patterns (just because I want to have that all stocking stitch sweater ...). I do like them to be on an intersting subject, like nature/wildlife or some hand craft technique. I don't like them to be only a quick tutorial, because then I have to click some buttons to go on with the next video ... 😉

I dye with walnuts. It's advantageous to increase surface area, so I crush the hulls before dying. Put them in a plain cloth bag, put the bag in front of your car tire, and drive the car back and forth over the bag a few times slowly. You may need to stop and reset the bag location to make sure the material is under the tire properly. Easy peasy! Actual conversation: Hey, honey, can I borrow the car keys - don't worry, I won't leave the driveway. Um...what for? For walnut dying! Um...what???
@k3n.clothtales
@k3n.clothtales 8 ай бұрын
I also dye with walnuts but just use them whole, soak in water for a good while then smash them up a bit with an old potato masher. But I might try your way, if for nothing else than to amuse my neighbours... 😂😉❤️

Looks very nice, but I thought you would remove the original running stitches on the plain fabric side, for a more polished finish, since you had already stitched the edges together ? Just a thought. I also thought a person could use a finished cross stitch piece on the top and a fabric piece on the bottom. I am going to do this myself with some small finished cross stitched pieces I have in a box.🧑🏻‍🦰🇨🇦

You can use Garnet Sand, (Crushed Garnet Crystals) as pin cushion filler. It sharpens pins and needles when you push them in and the weight is really nice to have for a work surface pin cushion. I’ve made a few of the large strawberries with garnet sand. I can’t wait to make a Biscornu Pin Cushion, maybe a garnet ‘button’ in the center will work for sharpening. The Garnet Sand is easy to find online, eBay etc.

I really, really enjoyed your video - you speak English, with an English accent! Much, much better than American accents! You also talk to yourself - I felt quite at home! I’m co fused about the two strands on the floss, do you mean to separate two strands from the six, or do you mean doubled over so there are 2 strands of six?
@k3n.clothtales
@k3n.clothtales 9 ай бұрын
Sorry it was confusing, I mean to pull off two strands, and I usually pull them off one at a time or they get tangled. 😉❤️

@@k3n.clothtales thank you, one more question?: do use do the entire project using 2 of the embroidery threads ? When you do the stitching in all your other projects on the topside of the fabrics are you using g just 2 threads on those as well? I’m so glad I found your channel yesterday, you opened a new work to me! I love the spools and the keepsake book projects!

I mostly use two strands, just because I think that thickness looks just right and it's nice to stitch with. But sometimes I might use 3 or more. More often I have 2 strands in my needle and go over the stitch twice if I want it thicker. If you look at my Seed Stitch video, I talk about that. 😉 Welcome and thank you ❤️

Finally made one of these … the shape looks so cool, but it’s really quite simple …. I have some ground walnut shells I bought on Etsy years ago, it seems. Just in time, too. I’ve had one of those Chinese circles with the characters all around holding hands, and the satin on the top is finally wearing through, so I can’t tip it over. I may go up to a 6 or even 7” square and make it two tone like you did, because I keep tons of needles and pins in my little Chinese cushion. Maybe time to make a needle case with specific page for the different sizes I use, because the two flap one I have won’t hold much, and I like loading up my needles, say 10 at a time so I’m not fiddling with it. Thank you again, for sharing this beautifully shaped pin cushion

Maybe you can use buckwheat hulls for filling. Those are used for pillows that give more support to head and neck than the soft pillows (I have one).

I will try this pin cushion, looks to be a very appealing shape 💝 I haver never tried to crush walnut shells but I have seen the process for crushing/grinding wood for making into wood pellets. Step one is to hack it up into pieces, about the size of a walnut actually. Then dry them thoroughly, they may feel dry to the touch but they need to be drier to make it possible to grind them, they need to be some low percentage of moisture that I do not remember. And then into a large grinder. So I would try drying the walnut shells on a baking tray in the oven, or using one of those food drying machines, before attempting any crushing or grinding. And also perhaps checking if walnut shell dust is bad for you before that? Apparantly walnut wood dust is quite bad for your lungs.
@k3n.clothtales
@k3n.clothtales 10 ай бұрын
Thank you, I did give them a good roasting in the oven of my kitchen range so they were well and truly dried. I think a grinder would be the only way but I don't have one 😔 I think my horse blanket stuffing is a good alternative.. 😁 we've been using the walnut shells to light the wood burner 😉😊

Cute pincushion! You might try crushing the bag of walnut shells under the wheels of your car, rolling your car back and forth over the top of the bag. I just went to the pet store and bought “lizard litter” a few years ago when I made pincushions for every female in our families for Christmas.

I have made pin cushions stuffed with crushed walnut shells, it came from a pet shop, I think it’s used in fish tanks? It comes in rather large bags so I have enough to make as many pin cushions as I could ever want and still some to bequeath after I’m gone! But it does make great pincushions, it’s very fine so you need tight seams to keep it all in or I make a little pouch for it and stitch it on the machine, then put it in the pin cushion and fill any gaps with normal stuffing! ❤
