How to make a Blimp Envelope from Emergency Blanket Mylar

In this video I demonstrate a cheap and easy method to make a blimp envelope that can be used to make efficient and streamlined blimps for indoor flying. The same technique can be used with other more expensive materials for outdoor blimps.

I have actually thought making battle blimps out of cheap mylar that shot at each other using airsoft mechanisms would be very interesting. I'm pretty sure an airsoft round would penetrate a blimp like this. Last one flying wins. Could be interesting.

@@BaccaYarro Haha that would be pretty cool. You could also use an infrared laser that you have to line up with the other blimp to shoot with. The other blimp coud have sensors that receive the infrared signals and it acts as a "hit." I've seen this used in certain battle drones before so it's definately possible. This would allow them more than one use as well. 😀

on this topic, i have thought before: what if one was to take some, perhaps wooden frames, and make the skeletal structure of a blimp out of it and then cover the thing with "armor segments" (the wood would be too tough for a bb to go through anyway so only the area in between these needs armoring). basically you take a sheet of aluminum foil, put glue on it and put another sheet on top, squeez any excess glue out, keep doing this until you're satisfied with strenght/weight ratio (the glue between the sheets kinda acts as a shock absorber. so compsite armor. now fix these armor segments onto the frame. i think it would be pretty sturdy with enough layers of aluminum and if it so happens that one of the armor segment is penetrated you still have the actuall lift cell inside to be penned (and the armor segments can be easily removed and replaced without the need to replace the whole exterior)

Thank you for making this video. I was trying to make a foil balloon via the same method (if it holds air good enough for a blimp...) I was having trouble with the contact cement - but I think I used too much or was not following the right process. (I did not know that you had to let it dry for a while before you put the parts together. I would add that you might be able to glue the part inside a commercial foil balloon for the filler nozzle too. These will naturally close themselves when the blimp is filled up - by the same method that keeps one of those inflated too. I am also wondering about gluing stuff to the outside (made of the same material (I am making something made out of multiple parts and want to glue the appendages on somehow - I have an idea that would use material to attach these parts to the surfaces. Any ideas or types of glue? Specific brand for the epoxy

I use tape, or if I want to reduce weight, tape that I make myself from contact cement and mylar. The trick is to not make butt joints, which peel away easily. But instead use lap joints. However, a decent epoxy type glue that works ok is: www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-50133-Tan-1-Pack

​@@BaccaYarro Yes - I did a lapped seam this morning - I got the exact glue you mentioned above at a local Hardware store too. Being into custom produced PVC inflatable toys I know that lapped seams are much stronger than the butt type seams (or sometimes called pinch seams. After further testing I got a much better result - which used the lap type seams mentioned above. What I am making will be a general display item - and will not be requited to be light enough to float. I've wanted to make some custom made mylar / foil balloons for a long time - but have never been able to find any suitable material until I saw your videos.

In Europe is more likely available glue from Pattex or Henkel, the PVA Stick is available in any grocery, for the neoprene and epoxy double tube glue maybe you need a specialized store. The UHU PVA stick is sold in a very yellow very known package that's quite different from that but still it's a dense PVA emulsion.

If anyone would be interested in doing decorations for their blimps (or other items of this material) Paint markers seem to work good - I have a brand called Craft Smart that I tested on the material - seems pretty resistant to coming off after drying.

Bacca i am a complete novice who just discovered this video. Thanks for posting...it was very informative...but also kinda confusing. The high camera angle made it difficult to clearly see everything you were doing. I was totally confused with the cutting, folding, gluing of (4 stacked???) portions of the envelope. Forgive this newbie question,🙋🏿‍♂️ but instead of four sections...would this technique work (and be easier) if you just cut TWO HALVES and glued the 2 pieces together? Or better yet, cut an elongated "figure 8" shape and just fold it over and glue the open end?🤔

Hey Bacca, great work! thanks for sharing....now, i have absolutely no idea how to use the spreadsheet to print the shape. I have Excel on my mac, so how do create the shape I need and then print? [Please excuse my Noobness but I dont use spreadsheets so this is very foreign to me.] FYI, once the envelope is made im going to use a RC unit from a Flying fish thing my GKids killed to steer this, and create a gondola to use up the remaining lift out of Tissue paper and Balsa, it will be themed around Steampunk Airships if I ever get it done i'll post a link here. That sounds like a very interesting project! I found it too difficult to print the shape, so I just use the graph to plot it on a roll of carpenter paper. I use a tape measure to plot out some of the points (remember it's in meters). The "Shape" tab is good for plotting some of the points out.

Yes, they should be. Safety blanket mylar is pretty universal. If you can't get weldwood, any latex based contact cement would work fine

If you make a copy of the excel sheet in the description link you should be able to edit it. Change the "Block Volume" field in the yellow box. All the Yellow fields are the ones you are supposed to change.

@@BaccaYarro thank you, the airship I am making will be about 5.5m long . I saw 100 micron polyurethane was good but not easily sourcable, im also open to mylar or metalized nylon. Any recommendation of material and where I should purchase from?

@@ryanjacob4828 yeah, 5.5 m is a little big for mylar, but I would probably still do it. Or if you want to get fancy, an inner envelope made of mylar and an outer one made of nylon ripston fabric. A group I'm working with is using something similar now for an 8 m airship and it is working great.

So why not go bigger scale? Use a wood laser and 3d print some auto cad ribs. Balsa wood is great for planes so why not a blimp. Add a few servos and a few motors. Pretty much you can fly anything with enough lift.

Heh. Frued probably had some things to say about blimp shapes, but all kidding aside, latex doesn't retain lifting gas very well. The gas goes through it too easily.
