Here's how I made a bushcraft knife from a lawnmower blade.
You never know what might be available to you after the apocalypse so here's how to make multipurpose knife from a lawnmower blade. Or you can just think of it as a fun way to make something useful by upcycling a piece of steel scrap.
Here's Part 2: • How to make a bushcraf...
This is my second lawnmower blade knife and I spent a lot of time trying to get it right. I wanted a medium sized, sleek all purpose camp knife/bushcraft knife that felt good in the hand and had a nice sharp edge and plenty of belly for skinning, butchering and just about any other task you can ask from this kind of knife.
This blade would definitely serve you well in the bush, on the hunt, in a survival situation, after the apocalypse or just about any other place/time you can think of. If you don't mind a sheath knife, this could even serve in the EDC roll.

Cool! I'm not a blacksmith or knife maker but I have tried both before. One thing I know is drilling holes in your knife before you heat treat it is a lot easier than after it's treated.... learned that one the hard way 😉

By far some the best knife making videos, good to see someone fairly new using either home made or more budget friendly equipment. Your earlie video on just start forging actually got me to make a forge and make my first knife a couple of days ago.

Turn your angle grinder round! Have the sparks coming towards you, so if it snags it'll just pull away from you rather than fly towards you! Obviously don't sit directly in the path of the sparks lol Good video!

Very nice knife, it looks awesome I love your blade shape. I've found the same issue with the hammer dings being incredibly difficult to remove unless you have a very expensive belt grinder and a lot of time. Thanks for the video.

I’ve found you can knock out any minor pits in the steel with a harbor freight belt sander. 60-80 grit will take it out. Of course that assumes that you havent hardened the steel yet. Honestly any putting on the blade will just make it a perhaps less attractive blade, but as long as your edge is hard and fine, there’s no functionality lost

Really my friend. When the grinder sticks to material and almost injuring you,you kinda want to think about putting on some diff clothes. U gave yourself the best advice. No loose clothing. And you do exactly the same thing again. U know what,,,, i did it to. Haha. Lol. It was dangerous. So pls. ... if i post a vid of me using a anglegrinder with tight clothes and all the safety attachements on grinder you do the same pls:) safety first brother bladesmith:) respect sir. Just found your videos and subscribed. Any thoughts on doing a kitchen knife in the future? Maybe even a Damascus-style blade? I'm not sure if it's possible with your setup, but It would be interesting to see if you could. Keep the videos coming though, and tuck your shirt in!

Brian P Thanks! I did one chefs knife video a couple weeks back, part of my “three knives in three days” playlist. But yes, I’m not able to do Damascus with the charcoal forge, just doesn’t get hot enough for welding. Planning to upgrade to propane soon. Hope to tackle damascus this fall or winter. Thanks for the comment, cheers!

i have a dumb question. he heats the metal and then let it cool slowly. question is shouldnt it have been soft after this?
@thejoneses100
@thejoneses100 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. It’s called annealing. When you anneal a piece of steel, you heat the material enough to where the the molecular composition of the steel changes to a softer state. The point is to make the metal soft to where you can shape it easier. Then, you heat and quench in oil (or saltwater, or in a high silicate material to case harden on steels with too low of a carbon content to oil/water quench) to re-harden

Fred Garvin not a dumb question that's how you aniel it for workability.. cut your profile, shape, bevel ,heat ,quench,temper,polish,sharpen,done!

ok. not throwing rocks or wanting to debate anyone in the comments. i have a question if you look on some forums of course you see different opinions about the probable steel that is lawn mower blades etc, etc... now that you have used low tech and high tech methods in your journey, i assume you have used "non-mystery metal" in addition to mystery lawn mower blade metal. question: what is your hands on qualified opinion of the edge retention and toughness of the "mystery metal LMB" vs bought steel blanks?

I’m sorry but you couldn’t have used the angle grinder in a worse way! Firstly, you want the sparks to fly towards you. Secondly, there is a reason why angle grinders come with guards and Handels! Be safe buddy, and cool knife

It actually don't make any sense to me knowing lawn mower blades are relatively a soft spring type steel! Why I have several times attempted to drill holes in lawn mower blades or make existing holes larger only to ruin several Good drill bits! Normally that only happens with Tempered Hard steel or Stainless? Hence after forming the knife then heating to temper only the cutting edge makes sense placing handle holes first and then heating for a final tempering seems logical. Did that make sense? Now though that I have seen somebody Actually repurpose a lawn mower blade to a knife blade I'd so like t try to. Thing is? I'm not a black smith and i don't have a heating forge suppose i can attempt doing it the anchant way? We'll see?
