Looks 18 inches or more. And YES to the point about the water quench. Balls it took. So my question about that is when you quench in oil. Is the knife harder or the same as water? I never saw water quenching before. THANKS

@@renegaderetiree60 Rebars are soft steel so hardening is pretty much useless.
@panzerlieb4 ай бұрын
@@Fabsi87not exactly. He’s actually introducing a fair amount of carbon into the steel by using a charcoal forge. Most of the carbon will be near surface so he’s basically case hardening. But quenching will definitely have an effect.

Ya that made me hold my breath
@marton_dobo3 ай бұрын
Reinforcement bars have a very uneven carbon content, because they are made by melting together all kinds of steels, mostly mild steel but some spring- and toolsteels too. They are too brittle for fine ornamental forging but too soft for blades. I only make arrowheads from them because they are easier to forge than springsteels but a waterquench gives them a little bit of hardness, not enough too be brittle but I've seen examples of that too. This knife should have been forged out of a leaf spring instead.

@landroveraddict24576 ай бұрын
no, it's a low carbon steel. Lot of time spent which could have been better used.
@minnesotatomcat6 ай бұрын
Most rebar is mild steel and not hardenable. There are some types of rebar that is made of good steel that is hardenable, I’m doubtful this is that kind of steel though.
@zulazri21655 ай бұрын
in my experience, reinforcement bar steel suitable use salt water for quenching.
@minnesotatomcat6 ай бұрын
Most rebar isn’t hardenable, some can be. Who knows if this is.
@Del350K46 ай бұрын
As I understand it, the idea is that manufacturers don't really control carbon content that closely with rebar, so you j u s t might be lucky and find that yours does pass the file test after heat treat. On my channel there's a rebar sword video. - after making it I realised it didn't matter to me whether the rigmarole had achieved anything as I'd better not sharpen it, given that everyone who sees it wants to pick it up and look at it, so I don't keep it sharp anyway. But obviously, most people want to make a functional item and wouldn't be content with having made a mere wallhanger.
@philsturgill34356 ай бұрын
Generally speaking, you can somewhat tell if it’s harden-able by how well it sparks when you grind it. The more sparks, the better. At least that’s what I have heard while watching Forged in Fire for 9 seasons.
