We grew up fairly poor, although I didn't know it until I became an adult. I thought we ate beans & corn bread because it was so good. One of my favorites was when mom made a canned ham. She always cut diagonal lines about 1/2 inch deep across the top, making a diamond pattern. In each of those diamonds she inserted a whole clove, then covered it with brown sugar. Next came the pineapple rings with maraschino cherries in the center of each ring. These were held in place with toothpicks. When she served it, the pineapple and cherries were almost burnt and so good. In my opinion, this is so much better than spiral or whole bone-in hams. And they are about 1/2 the price of "real" hams.

I loved this type of ham as well. But due to health issues, I no longer eat it as it contains just way too much salt.

I agree; canned hams are really handy to have on hand. I like to dice it up for ham and beans, fry with eggs, and ham salad. Thanks for the recipe! God bless!

1. Rinse and blot the Ham dry. 2. Score the Ham about 1/4" deep with a sharp knife diagonally creating a diamond pattern. 3. Put Cloves about 1/2" apart over the entire Ham on the intersecting points of the grid. Then do your thing with the Brown sugar and Pineapple. My father showed me this, and always got rave reviews from everyone at Easter.

Tried this tonight. Whole meal took 20 from beginning to end.I used a 1lb ham. I wasn't as generous with the brown sugar, next time I will use a little more.I put it in the oven at 325 for 20 minutes and it was delicious!

Well when you are prepping, normalcy is key. Having a canned ham that reminds people of better times is key. Keeping spirits up goes a long way. I like keeping several small canned hams when it's just my hubby and myself.

Debbie, thank you for posting this. I always enjoyed a canned ham baked with brown sugar, pineapple and maraschino cherries when I was growing up and I still love it. Now that Thanksgiving is coming around I almost have enough points accumulated to qualify for a free turkey or a ham at my local ShopRite and although I'm probably gonna end up with the turkey because that's what everybody else in the family likes, truth be told I would much rather have a good ol' baked ham to go with all of the sides and pies that I will be making...✌

Debbie, with the price of hams today, I thought we would try a canned ham for New Years day. I was looking for a simple recipe and yours fit the bill. I cooked the ham exactly as you showed and it turned out great, both my wife and I enjoyed it, and now we have left over for sandwiches. In the past I have paid more for spiral cut and smoked hams that were not this good.. Thank you.

Awwwww, thank you. I've got one in now for our New Year's meal at 12 tonight. We always have ham and black eyed peas so I just got a canned ham. I think they are almost as good as a regular ham. Happy New Year to you!!!

Thanks for the video recipe Debbie. My wife and I are both retired on modest pensions and since it is just us now we don't need a big ham. This one looks just about right for us and every ingredient is affordable. We especially like your trick of using brown sugar to get a maple-like flavour. Thanks again for posting this recipe.

Those Hormel canned hams stay great for a long time. I justed used one recently here in 2020 that had a best by date of 2015. I've had it stored in the fridge since I bought it and finally decided to open her up! It was great! Did a lot of research that indicates these canned hams good for years if stored correctly. Don't forget the Cloves!
@peoplez1298 жыл бұрын
I did this simple recipe in a cheap 1lb canned ham and it turned out well. Obviously not as good as a real spiral ham, but still edible and enjoyable to eat. The ham would have definitely been inedible without the brown sugar and pineapples. My mother never used brown sugar as far as I know, but she always used pineapples. I think that a good addition would be black cloves. I've always enjoyed them for seasoning hams all my life, and without it hams are just not the same. I think some other caveats should be to use a skewer to poke a dozen holes in the ham from the top down and allow the brown sugar and pineapple juice to pool in there to really soak up the seasoning since you'll only really be cooking most canned hams for 30-60 minutes. I find that canned hams usually require higher heat or longer cooking times than the directions state. It's generally 15 minutes per pound, but even a 1 pound ham won't start getting that nice browning until about 30 minutes in.
@sallywasagoodolgal11 жыл бұрын
I didn't hardly know there was any kind of ham but a canned ham till I got grown, married a farmer and he had a pig or two we butchered every year. We cut a a diamond pattern around the canned ham, poked in cloves where the lines intersected, slathered it with mustard, then brown sugar, and then the pineapple slices held on with toothpicks. We really dressed it up! Did it taste better because of that? Well, I kinda forget, but it sure was fancy looking.

I would just mix some pineappleJuice with brown sugar and brush over the ham - then stick the pineapple pieces on ..... And let it brown up in oven for 30 minutes .... Some brands of canned ham can be quite good - I think heating it is great idea - like spam it tastes a lot better when it's fried or grilled .

I believe the Hormel Black label ham is actually whole ham portions, or larger pieces of ham, cut to fit in the can. Others are made from pressed and chopped ham trimmings that are vacuum sealed to take on the shape of the can. The texture is completely different. Many are definitely 'SPAM' like. This is not.

Denise. I grew up in a really poor family. We had super cheap eats that were really great. Try this. Get a ring balogna (garlic, if you can find it) cut them into half moon shapes only about an eight of an inch thick. Be careful and slowly fry until brown in a little oil. Remove to a plate. Throw in a medium sized onion that's been chopped. Sweat them, then add LOTS of garlic, maybe five or six cloves. Then put the meat back in and cover with a can or two of baked beans (Campbell's is best) no sweet kind. Put a tilted lid on.. Simmer for an hour or so. Stir it up every fifteen minutes. Then serve it with Italian bread and butter, and a glass of cold milk. The onions balance the sweet of the beans. The heavy garlic tastes great with the bites of meat. Trust me it's great. Even better reheated in a day or two. Super cheap. Super tasty. Low in fat. Lots of fiber. Onion and garlic, good for you. Enjoy.

It's definitely reconstituted meat with a lot of meat glue, but I think canned ham has the texture similar to a very tender beef roast. Canned hams are definitely more 'airy' or lower density than regular ham.
