Hi guys! :D Thanks for the positive feedback. Here's my answer to a few of the commonly asked questions: -- Is the headboard mounted: It's not mounted to the wall. I pulled my mattress about 2 inches off the base and stuck the headboard in that 2-inch space between the wall and the mattress. Because it's pretty sturdy, it doesn't move. And you don't really notice that the mattress overhangs the bed frame. Will add a photo to show soon! Cost: If I had to buy the key materials, an approximate cost would be US$160 for wood planks, fabric, foam, batting, spray glue, wood screws. I already owned some of the materials and had the tools on hand. -- Fabric colour and type: The fabric is a very pale lilac and I believe it's velveteen. Yes it's super soft :) Additional thoughts: -- Wood planks: Using the planks made the headboard super heavy so if weight is a concern, you can use a 3/4 inch sheet of plywood cut down into the size planks you'd like or use a lighter but sturdy material. Hope this helps.

Hi I really love your personality and how you covered every single step mentioning the 'not to do's' as you go. You are a smart person to have easily figured this out and, you have great taste in fabric. That is velvet fabric. There's silk velvet, cotton velvet and polyester (which is a bit too shinny). I believe you had a beautiful, perfect velvet and I love the color!. I hope you buy some scotchgard from walmart and spray it to protect it from any stains. I want to make my headboard now that you've inspired me! Thank you so much teacher 🙂💝🙏🏼

First, WOW! Your technique is flawless with that upholstery process! You could've given a professor of mine, and a few former coworkers, a lesson on professional finishing! I just wanted to add since I noticed you using a box knife on the foam, that if you can find a cheap or thrift store electric carving knife, they run through upholstery foam like a hot knife through butter! Obviously they're more critical in places like props shops where you need to do more than straight lines, but they also cut down on time with any regular home projects. Plus, if you have an electric carving knife already, I'd suggest just getting new blades for food and using the old ones for crafting. Make sure to put some paint on the crafting ones just to be safe. 😉👍 Last thought, I know your plan was an adjustable size, but it's also possible to get that effect without needing as much fabric and batting by instead carving the foam and then treating it like a tufting project. If I can find my booklet from school on how to I will come back and share the process. Thank you for creating such a detailed tutorial and showing what really quietly craftsmanship looks like!
@KatieCottingham3 жыл бұрын
Scrolled more and found this version with horizontal channelling. It's not exactly how I was taught to do it, but it's from a professional upholstery company so it's got a super clean finish. Like I said, the downside to this type of technique is you don't have the same level of customizability in size, PLUS, your version definitely makes it easier to change your mind on fabrics at any point in the future.
@LifesAHmazing3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, Katie! I really try to make my DIYs as professional-looking as possible or else it would bother the perfectionist in me 😄 Yes, re using an electric knife. It would definitely make the project easier. I initially looked for one where I live but decided in the end to just use what I had on hand. But you've reminded me that I still need to pick up one as I have some more upholstery projects coming up. Thanks again for your lovely comment and for sharing your tips!
@LifesAHmazing3 жыл бұрын
And I also want to try another one using a different technique that would be easier though not as customizable size-wise. I saw a video where they used that carving technique with the foam across one sheet of plywood. So that's one I'll try next. Have a lovely Sunday

Are the individual planks 6 inches by 32 1/2 inches before foam and fabric? Will the hardwood store cut wood into planks for you?

Hi Kena! The planks are closer to 36 inches long before fabric and about 1/2inch thicker after. I got someone at my local hardware to cut down the 1x6x10 plank into 3 planks with a little piece remaining. But it would depend on the hardware you visit. Hopefully you'll find someone helpful enough to cut it for you. I also used 2 or 3 planks from an old bed frame which were the same size. Hope this helps

Absolutely beautiful! But is there anything that separates the head board from the floor? 🤍

Hi Dee. Thanks much! The headboard is resting on top my bedframe between the wall and mattress. Hope this helps
