my #1 tip is ironicly the oppisite. Don't be afraid of small numbers. Character flaws are half the fun. Partly because it's not the biggest decision in the world, but partly because otherwise there may be an overlap in what skills you get. Alternative method: 1. Come up with an actual idea for a character. The only real limitations are that you are expected to create a character who wants to go adventuring, is going to want to adventure with the party, and who would be a valuable member of the party. Also, that you will most likely be creating a character at the _start_ of their career. 2. Pick the class that most closely matches your idea. You pick the class first because it's the class that makes the most difference to what your character is going to be able to do. _Don't_ get hung up on the name of the class, look at what taking the class will enable your character to _do._ Go from the concept in your head and start narrowing it down. Pay attention to what Ability score matters most to the class you pick. 3. Now you pick your Race. Check with your DM as to what implications your choice will have in their setting. Your DM might rule that certain Backgrounds are off-limits for certain Races (ie. some races can't be Nobles). If you don't really know what to pick, just pick Human. 4. Assign/buy/generate your Ability scores. Your DM will tell you how this is to be done at their table. Don't be disappointed if you've got some low scores; weaknesses are as - or more - important in defining a character as their strengths. But equally, don't be the douche who assigns a low score to their PC's primary Ability. A low INT Fighter can be fun. A low INT Wizard is not. Not for you and not for the other players. 5. Now pick your Background. _Don't_ go by the titles, go by the Background Feature. Pick a Background Feature that is appropriate for your character concept and that you are actually going to _use_ during play and just switch the proficiencies, Traits, Bonds and Flaws up if you need to. Don't be the moron who picks "Acolyte" because their character was raised by an evil cult then escaped. How are you going to use Shelter of the Faithful with an organisation that you're on the run from? 6. Complete the rest of your sheet and have someone who knows what the fuck they're doing look it over. A really good idea is to have a cheat sheet printed out that has the _full, unedited_ text of your PC's Class/Race/Background Features and staple it with the rest. I have never known anyone to regret doing this last bit. Your DM may want you to write a backstory so that they can personalise parts of the campaign. Writing too much is as bad as writing too little. Three punchy paragraphs (origin, training, motivation) is about right for most groups.

Small detail that was forgotten to be looked at was alignment. LG, LN, LE, NG, TN, NE, CG, CN, and CE. Good and Evil speak for themselves. Lawful, whether good, neutral, or evil, means your character acts based on a code, method, or OCD (just a joke, not meant to be offensive either since I have OCD myself). Chaotic, whether good, neutral, or evil, means your character acts on a whim and can simply be there for the goods and magic items or just for the sake of adventure. Neutral is essentially somewhere between those two. In other words, your tiefling rogue criminal can still be Neutral Good... kinda like a Robin Hood of sorts... idk

But this does the trick just fine until someone rocks up to your game and the dm allows the weird additional races and class. For example I recently made a neko planer sniper which is really fun. When you get use to it all I’d invest time into homebrew as it is so worth it.

It’s a half-elf ranger from Damaran who greatly admires Drizzt Do’urdan, the drow hero of the north. They grew up around paying adventure with their human friends and he was always honored to dawn his white dish towel on his head and play the role of Drittz, one he got stuck with mostly because of his slightly pointed ears. He became a ranger due to his upbringing in Damaran, but this only strengthened his idolization of Drittz. When his human childhood friends decided to settle down he never could. His human side wanted to be a great hero like Drittz and his elven wanderlust gave him the final push he needed to travel. He starts with his preferred terrain being under dark despite never having been there due to reading about drow, and he wears a cheap, probably fake, spider silk shirt from his human mother as pajamas that he never ever lets see sunlight because he read that drow equipment is damaged by sunlight. His confidence comes from his idolization of Drittz, so when faced with tense situations he can’t solve he becomes nervous and eventually panicked and emotional. He also dreams of overcoming his fear of spiders so he can see the under dark someday.

I usually make my ideals quotes that the person would say or has said or will say. For example I have a female Oni barbarian who is Carnage levels of insane. Her quote/ideal is: “Blood is like milk. When you spill it someone cries!”

Ok I’m old….very old… we didn’t have to do nearly all the details that they do now when I first started playing…… way way back….I think we still have our 1st edition Players handbook and the DM guide. Still remember buying my brothers the Fiend Folio as a Christmas gift when it was first released.

The way I make a dnd character is that I have a general theme that I want, and build a person around that theme. Such as loneliness, vengeance, childish wonder, and hating chickens

That Harry Potter bit. I guess that is true cause Wizards in that universe are born with their magic so they would technically be Sorcerers in DnD but of course they do go to school to learn how to control & improve their magic, so Harry would be a Sorcerer-Wizard.... Maybe? I have no clue on the levels though.
