In the first story, the DM literally SET UP a great moment for the cleric to BE a cleric, and then ripped it away for no reason other than to bully a new player. I know people like that exist, but it still grinds my gears when I hear about new excited players being abused.

Not keeping track of HP is not the answer to unfair\tedious battles. Adjusting it at times is okay, but removing it completely takes away the thrill of killing it quickly or struggling, which are both fine situations as long as it doesn't always happen.

I don't know what it says about me, but like I have no problem with how the OP went about their interaction or their post. Maybe I am not understanding something, but I don't think that they are wrong for not ending the conversation earlier. I could just not be picking up on something, but it seemed like the OP was just reacting to what the player was saying and then when OP realized that the conversation wasn't going to go anywhere, they stopped responding. Maybe we're upset at the OP for not realizing sooner that they weren't going to get anywhere going back and forth with the player, but I don't find the OP annoying or necessarily wrong in anyway. :/

I once took the stats of a homebrew slender man I found online and added them to a hydra. Called it a slendra. Mightve been a bit stronger than I anticipated but nobody died.

They biggest issue for me is that unless its a party of brand new, never touched anything dnd related players, everyone pretty much knows what a false hydra is now. The entire cool aspect of it is the mystery and forgetting aspect of not knowing what this thing could possibly be until you solve the mystery. Which kind of goes out the window once everyones memed and talked about it so much that even me who hasnt played a whole lot of dnd but watches a lot of youtube could almost immediately go "Oh yeah this is probably a flase hydra its messing with our heads." Its lost too much of its main element of surprise because of how infamous it is.

The joke about the Fighter is that "Fighter" doesn't feel like in universe nomenclature the way Wizard, Paladin, Bard or Barbarian is. The joke is that "Fighter" should probably be like... "Mercenary" or "Soldier" lol

I totally agree with the guy that said that TPK does not mean you had a bad game! One of the best One-Shot I've played ended in a a TPK that was so cool for the story, we all enjoyed the hell out of that game!

As a DM, I always consider that a players character understands the world better than the player does. Its important to give players who are making a good faith attempt to interact with the world every option they can to understand the choices that they are making. Example; " [Your character] knows that attempting to use the climbing kit while invisible may draw the guards attention from the noise it makes. Do you still want to attempt it?" Increase the players engagement by giving them hard choices. Then its not so much about making a ruling, but about playing the game...

The Dave story reminds me of a game I'm playing where my character just flat out hates the undead (that's the only constant in his arc, there is nothing that has yet convinced him that undeath shouldn't exist). Meanwhile, one of the players is undead. How we roleplayed it is, that player constantly hid his state until it was too much to hide, and by the time we got that far, my character got to respect his enough to go "you know what? I'm not going to send you back to your grave by force, I'm gonna help you with your unfinished business instead".

When I ran it I made it more a horror mystery situation where the false hydras weaknesses were hinted at (a deaf man written off as crazy by locals) the left handed writing and a random pack being left in their room with travel supplies an box who had been met when they entered town or something (basically fodder who they won’t be attached to when lost but will spook them when they piece things together) but definitely do it in one to two campaigns not meant to be a drawn out thing lol

Hey, this was pretty brave of you to do. That last comment is like, every creator's nightmare to tackle head on you did it- and speaking out about that kind of thing I think is pretty important. Not to sound melodramatic or anything by saying all of that, I just like it when artist's stick to their guns. Those skits are never going anywhere, and people can just watch them again. I'm glad you and your friends have found a way to survive in this wide wacky world, and if that's something I can contribute to you and other DnD creators, then I'm happy listening to things you make that you like doing. I'm an artist as well and it's hard to deal with unwanted criticism that is baseless- but seeing new ways to do that makes me happy and gives me idea to keep things going.

Thank you for this. Started my first DnD campaign a few weeks ago, and put my players in a tavern, with my DMPC paying one player to go on a quest with her, and the other was tagging along because they shared a goal. Really helped give my players a direction to go in, where they knew what the hell was up, and made roleplaying less stressful.

I resisted commenting, as what I am going to say/write, will likely trigger the "snow-flake", easily butt hurt, entitled players. Dungeons and Dragons role play gaming is -Fantasy, non- real world play. As such, it is a " get away from real world, immersive FANTASY -"Game"! It is ment to "get away" from real world cares, issues, and anything in player's real world life. One takes on a "role", of a character, not of the player's, "real life". Player anyone you want, as fitting to the DM's created, FANTASY, realm. It's not a drama, "based on a true story", person, or situation. The "story", in which players, PLAY a part, should not become any player's, real life "agenda". It's a FANTASY GAME! I don't care what gender anyone plays. Just PLEASE, don't make it an agenda to push real world issues into a D&D Fantasy game! IS that REALLY -FUN?! - To make sure proper gender terms are used, during a Fantasy- Game? It shouldn't matter, in the scheme of what is suppsed to be a Fun fantasy game, to get away from, Reality, for just a little while. I find that a big problem with so many players, holding onto real world issues, terms, and knowledge, and trying to force them into what is supposed to be fun fantasy! Players need to let go of real world concepts while playing Dungeons and dragons. Only game rules, as interpreted by the DM, the referee, and the fantasy story are what matter. Players need to understand and accept that. Otherwise, go back to reality.

Generally, I do not see an issue with a low magic setting by itself. Magic does not nessicarily create more solutions so much as just gamifying them in a specific way. Ie, not really a spell in the 2014 book that gives you a way to deal with a broken bone or nerve damage. A lot of afflictions require a specific spell or item; ie, to get a Slaad tadpole out of your body or undo a mindflayer transformation you need wish. That is not really adding more options so much as making only 1 or 2 options that must be taken; if not defined as such a player so afflicted might try poisoning it, surgery, or some such.
