HOW TO: Make a Cherokee double-wall basket with Cherokee National Treasure Mike Dart

TAHLEQUAH - In this “How To” video, we learn how to make a Cherokee double-wall basket with Cherokee National Treasure Mike Dart. To make your Cherokee double-wall basket you will need the following: commercial reed size 1, awl (or flat head screwdriver), elastic cord (or cut a hair band), scissors comfortable for your hands and a tube or bowl large enough for water to wet the reed.

Dear Mr Dart, I watched your video from Hungary (it’s a small country in the middle of Europe). I’m a weaver myself, I make baskets form paper tubes. It’s not a traditional method, but it’s very affordable. Thank you for your video! I’ll try to recreate your basket from paper tubes!

Hello...double wall would add many benefits. The main one, it makes the basket stronger. And also the second wall ads insulation and in old times, it would have served in extra protection from outside elements such as dampness, and also rodents and insects. This of course, refers to larger storage baskets.

Siyo. Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, my classes are on hold indefinitely until covid is better under control in our area. This is something that occasionally I would have to get in the students personal space to show them certain things, and right now, that's just not a good idea. Please stay tuned, and hopefully this situation will better soon and I can begin in person teaching again.
