I'm putting together a Phantom of the Opera cosplay that I plan to use for any and every costume event for the foreseeable future, and with a few personal tweaks, you have the perfect video for his cloak right here (As I'm going for Gerard Butler's version of the role). And you are absolutely right. It's never too early for Halloween. Another question though; how would you go about measuring out the cloak? Do you do it by eyesight, or is there a formula?
@AliceinCosplayland Жыл бұрын
I do have a pattern available for the cloak linked in the video. It is all drafted using pattern making techniques and formulas as well as trial and error and tests to get the shape right 😊

Hey, nice tutorial! I was wondering how much fabric you used :)
@AliceinCosplayland2 жыл бұрын
This calls for 10 meters of fabric! But it depends on the width of it and if you are lining it. I used 3m of the double width fabric and 5m of the single width lining fabric. There are cutting layouts for both options in my pattern 😌

Where did you buy that lining fabric? It looks gorgeous and I am looking for a good lining fabric

I actually bought it online and super cheap. The shop is called cheapfabrics.co.uk but I can also recommend you to use satin lining for a super shiny elegant finish!

Is this an Spy X Family cape? I was searching the web for ways to sew on cape chains since all I was finding was clasps and I found this video 😂 I plan on doing Anya and Damien as teens with the capes. Do you know where I can find a tutorial on just sewing on the chains? Or where to buy them?
@AliceinCosplayland Жыл бұрын
It is! You don't need to sew the chain, sew two buttons and then put the chain around them 😁

🤔 If I'm using the not as wide fabric do I need to fold it still I'm a little lost sorry it says I need 5m but then folded so do I need 10?

Also including the lining would I need to make like 4 individual hood pieces 2 inside red and 2 outside black or would it be 8 individual? If it's double layeres
@AliceinCosplayland2 жыл бұрын
If it is a single fabric you don't need to fold the fabric, but can do lengthwise to get each semicircle, beware to cut them one by one. You need 2 pieces for the lining and 2 for the shell fabric. All this is explained in detail with drawings on my patterns ☺️

I recently made a half circle 58" cloak with a caplet that is also a semi circle and approx 25" from collar. I find the caplet doesn't lay well. Maybe you can give me idea why. I thought possible the neck wasn't large enough. Any thoughts I'd appreciate
@AliceinCosplayland7 ай бұрын
Well, I'm afraid it is very difficult to know without seeing it. It could be the fabric being too stiff. It could be the shape of the collar. I honestly don't know, but 25 inches sounds like a lot to me, so that's probably it

Around how many yards / meters would u recommend to not run out ?

That very much depends on the width of your fabric. For a normal width fabric you will need about 5 meters. You have more details and sketches on how to position your pieces on the instructions of the pattern 😇

Up next: how to make a vest with sleeves! (What you made has a name: it's a cape)
@AliceinCosplayland Жыл бұрын
Vests don't have sleeves and capes don't cover your shoulders 🤭 capes are for super heroes and not functional 🤗
@paradoxworkshop4659 Жыл бұрын
@@AliceinCosplayland the term "cape" means hood: Cape May, Cape Town, Cape Horn, Cape Cod, from the Greek "kappa". A "cloak" is a thing that covers, cloaked in secrecy, Cloak and Dagger, that sort of thing. A cloak with a hood is a cape. A vest with sleeves is a jacket or coat. Maille is armour made of little chain links, "chain mail" is redundant...
@AliceinCosplayland Жыл бұрын
@paradoxworkshop4659 that's great, in sewing terms it is different 🫡 a cape is ornamental, a cloak is functional to keep you warm when it is cold. Ultimately it doesn't matter what you call it

@@AliceinCosplayland patternmakers aren't always linguists, and I am well aware of the modern desire to use a cooler sounding word, since comic books got it wrong 70+ years ago... Historically speaking, these are all 'mantles' we bear... Now, let's talk about the "kilts" they wore in Braveheart. No. Actually. Let's never do that.

@paradoxworkshop4659 oddly enough I am an English teacher and studied linguistics, I bet you also know language evolves and eventually the users will change the meaning of the words. Currently, I stand by my definition, not like it matters as long as people understand what you mean 😁 You can call it whatever you want as long as you are happy with it
