I'm working on an antique Ansonia clock at the moment and needed a mainspring winder! Yeah, sure - I'll just make one from random junk I can find in my shed! But will it work?

You should of shown the end result at the start as i had no idea what you where making but I was happy to watch anyway. Bit of an inventor Chris.

Thanks Hugh. Yeah, I probably could have - but that would have ruined the mystery! 🤣

Looks great. I think instead of the bucket lid attached to the door handle if you were to drill a hole into the wood and stick a round piece of stock through that hole that then goes into the hole of the spring would work also. Might be safer.

Thanks Mark! Yes, that would probably be a better option. Thanks for watching 👍😊

As some others noted, at the start of the video, I wasn’t super certain of the purpose of the gizmo. Evidently, when repairing or servicing clocks, there are times when the mainspring must be removed and safely unwound so that it can be cleaned and oiled and then safely rewound so that it can be reinstalled in the clock. I think you have circumvented that need in previous clock repairs and now I see why. I look forward to seeing the clock repair and understanding better the process. Also, I now understand what you have meant in previous videos when you pronounced a piece of equipment or a construction “a little agricultural.” As always, your ingenuity and persistence is much admired!

Thanks Elaine. Yep Agricultural is a definite reference to a farmer's ability to fashion something together in a rough manner with minimal cost, time and no concern regarding aesthetics! It's just about getting a job done with no frills! You have a good grasp on basic repair work by the sounds of it 👍😊

Well Chris that was a very successful fiendish contraption! Next though is can you modify the other one in some way to make it useful for the likely hundreds of people who wasted their money on it?

Impressive (and scary) build! I wonder if a U-shaped piece of wood could slide down over the nut and stop the hook sliding out, as well as helping hold the spring in line. EDIT: Oh, you mentioned a shield at the end lol

Is the curve of the handle affecting the angle of the hook?
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 8 ай бұрын
Possibly Karen. I've altered the hook angle and it works much better. I think I'll also make a shield to keep the spring aligned as well 👍

Bloody beauty Chris. And yep. It does look like it was made in a Cockys shed. But bugga it. It does exactly what you wanted it to do. Well done mate. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Quick question, is there a certain tension clock springs need to be or just enough to fit back in the clock?
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Glen - it actually didn't turn out as rough as expected! 🤣 Springs can wind up until they won't wind anymore! But the wider only needs to wind them up enough to get the retainers on.
