Thanks for the video. Some consolidated improvements: 1. Make the entire system tall enough to fit a wheelbarrow underneath the drum. 2. Support 2x4 or 2x6 studs (treated wood) with a base brace (forming a triangle). Since the main braces are offset, will require small "filler" studs to make the bottom beam flush across. To further strengthen, you can also place smaller cross beams across the top, above the axle, above where the main legs form an 'X.' 3. Support cross stud across the back to strengthen laterally, about half-way. 4. For the axle, inner steel water pipe, and outer PVC pipe. The compost will be heavy, especially when moist and in volume. 5. Ventilation holes on the top and bottom (sides once turned sideways) of the 55 gal drum. Some suggested plastic mesh to cover holes, if on the main body of the drum. 6. Sandpaper and then paint drum a dark color, even black, to absorb sun's heating energy. 7. Some kind of handles to help turn the tumbler, considering in the handle design and placement how heavy the compost will become, especially when moist.

May I suggest an upgrade for future builds? If you cap off the PVS and drill tiny holes in the pvc on the inside of the barrel you may be able to find a hose attachment for moistening your compost like a built in sprinkler system inside the barrel.

+Christopher Batey i don't put all of those holes on the outside of the barrel. Instead, I cut a few PVC pipes to the length of the width of the barrel and drill holes in the PVC. Then make holes across from each other in the barrel, the width of the PVC (it needs to fit snugly so they don't fall in or out of the barrel) Now you have air going all through the compost, not just on the outside, and the soil won't fall out.

I made one.. I raised the barrel higher so you can get a mall wheelbarrow under it. So, when you dump it you can take the composition to your garden. I also used bolts, not rivets. Tha revits on mine rotted out quick. Other than that, it works well. Ty.

I just found your video after researching composting container ideas. Your setup is very nice and well thought out - simple, yet neat and functional. I've got a few of these 50/55gal. containers sitting around the barnyard, and I think I've found a good use for one of them based on your design. Thank you for the informative and helpful video.

Clever use of pop-rivets for the hardware attachments. If later you discover the rivets have pulled through the plastic, drill them out and replace them but this time use a washer on the plastic side as a reinforcement for the rivet. As you use the rivet tool to pop it, the stem will compress against the washer and tighten the joint. You might need to use the next length of rivet since you will be adding the thickness of a washer. The washer acts as a rivet head on the plastic side and will prevent pull-through.

Yes, they do need air holes for the composting process to work. The ones in this plan, however, look to be too large. Reducing the diameter of the holes by half will help keep the compost from falling through.

I would also suggest putting a bin or something under the compost bin. cause once you have the compost in it and if it rains, the rain water will filter through the composted material you will have instant compost tea collecting in the bin underneath.

For years without rotting where it's wet. PVC is used almost everywhere and last for years. I think this is really cool and looks way sturdier than the 150 dollars ones you see in stores. Good luck on the compost and just ignore the haters :)

I built basically the same barrel composter but I built a waist high U shaped stand for it. Like you I set the barrel on casters for easy rotation. On mine I attached four sturdy handles around the middle to make it easier to turn. It gets heavy. Since mine is waist high and the stand is U shaped I can work it standing up and I can get the wheel barrow under it to load and empty it. Like you I perferated the barrel but I didn't cut the larger vent hole in the end. I'll make that modification next time I empty it. I like the way you mounted the PVC agitators. I used smaller PVC and mounted the agitators on an angle. I think your agitators probably do a better job of agitating. I moisten the contents when ever I need to with my hand held hose sprinkler. My "catch all" compost pile is in the void under the barrel and it gets moisten when it rains, when I wet the barrel mix and when excess liquid drains out of the barrel. I like your work and thanks for going to the trouble to make and post the video.

In construction architecture the triangle is the strongest structure. To give added strength for your composting tumbler you should have a 2x4 along the side at the bottom to form a triangle. A composting tumbler can be heavy with weight from vegetation compost materials. Be safe from harms way and make that structure solid and strong.
@bvollmer90
@bvollmer90 10 жыл бұрын
You're right about this. I just built one and noticed that the tumbler could be too heavy, so I also added some wood along the bottom to form a triangle, and it's much stronger now.

Great build...I would suggest adding wood blocks with holes in them the same size as the pvc pipe. Use the blocks like a bearing and helps prevent the plastic on the barrel from wearing a much bigger hole in it. and help to keep it spinning easily when it get heavy. I have run into this problem before. just thought it might be something you may want to look at. Dave

Love this idea. Since with my back and neck injury it makes it hard for me physically to be able to turn over heavy soil in a compost bin, and buying the commercial ones are way over priced! Like a decent one will run you over $300. This is a great and inexpensive way to have a compost bin that is easy to construct and use to make that great black gold for the garden!

I'm so excited to make one! Upgrade, put a drip pan underneath to catch the "juice." Compost tea is GREAT to fertilize with while you're waiting for the dirt. Also, avocado peels take FOREVER to decompose. Either skip it altogether in the compost or shred amd soak in water for awhile first. Plus, you'll want to take the stickers off! 😊

+Kristina Haney Barrels that have had relatively benign products like soap are not a problem. Food grade is over the top, but if you can find one that has has been used for something like tomato sauce they will have a corrosion resistant coating on the inside (metal barrel, obviously).

neat concept, and cheap. If you have a piece of schedule 40 sewer pipe you can cut a straight cut down 1 side and use a heat gun to shape it into an L shape to make your fins. they are sturdier than the galvanized and will not bend as much as the galvanized sheeting. the side that attaches to the barrel can be shaped to fit the curve of the barrel. just a thought.

Love this, this is great info and I really appreciate you sharing this. Is it helpful to have the pvc pipe run through the barrel as far as mixing goes? I used this as a Great starting point..... But used 2 wood sawhorse legs, that open in a V shape from a local big box, no wood cutting, just open them up and place them at each end of the bar, with the barrel in the middle. There is a spot on them for 2 bolts, I drilled them a little bigger than used SS pan heads, with locking nuts. And a recycled metal top rail from a chain link fence. Have the pole extended 1' on each side for easy moving. Tomorrow I am going to add metal horizontal braces on each long side half way up, for stability and half ways up so that I can slide a 8 inch plastic bin underneath when emptying out. Got the barrel off Craigslist for $20.00. Some auto service centers will let you have them for free if they have them, windshield washer fluid was in mine................A fun1 1/2 hour job.

I like the idea of using a water baroll, the only problem I see is when it composts is the holes in the baroll, when you get compost it will fall out the holes when you turn it. If I might make a suggestion, rivit a small square of wire mesh inside to each hole to prevent loosing the compost. When it composts from refuse to dirt it will fall out of the airholes. Love the fins, and the door but there again dirt or compost will fall out of the crack around the edges. You might try riviting a strip of plastic on the door overlapping the edege to create a good seal. Just what I have been looking fore. Thanks frank

Barrel. NO such thing as a "baroll". Rivet, not "rivitt". Losing, not "loosing". It does not produce "dirt", which is soil. The composter produces compost or substrate. No mineral content (sand, rock) - just biodegraded organic matter.

I made this same (almost) tumbler a few years ago. Still using it, but honestly it's not as good as I had hoped. First off, I put handle on mine because, when you actually get some volume in your barrel it gets crazy hard to turn. Second, the holes get clogged easy. Third, new compost goes in with the old stuff and so the good, aged compost just gets mixed with the new stuff. I liked my old standing composter with the new stuff on top and good, old dirt out the bottom. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for taking the time to share though.

I made this! My comments: I used a metal (conduit) I found in the electrical dept. cause PVC can bend. The lock corroded and now does not open. Instead of metal fins that can cut your hand, I used pvc pipes. I made 2 holes across from each other on the belly of the barrel, then inserted the pvc pipe through. I secured them with U-bolts (like the ones you have on the ends, which I don't have and it's fine) Now, this pipes serves as a handle to spin the tumbler AND break up material.

Very nice - thanks for the video - interested that you are composting weeds. I was told that composting weeds is never a good idea

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I am very interested in how this tumbler will hold up long term. (Think 3-4 years). With the ends of the PVC pipe remaining exposed to the elements(Think UV exposure and freeze-thaw cycles), I would have reservations about the robustness and longevity of a plastic that is designed for "indoor" or "in-ground" applications. In my experience, PVC does not bode well residing outdoors.(Think brittle.)

Add a windmill and hook it to the barrel for automatic mixing.

I do like the design. My experience, the holes should be on the ends for better moisture control.

I get the basic idea but i still do not see how this will help with all those holes in it. Wont the compost eventually fall through the holes or be washed out by rain? Is this for plant matter compost only?

You could just secure cloth or some other kind of gone mesh over the holes.

Compared to a regular compost bin, how long does it take to fully compost using this tumbler method?

Open up and fasten ring clamps in the "V" cradle to keep the PVC in place 😉

I made something similar to this one, how long does it usually take for food scraps (veggies, fruit peels etc.) to be used as compost?...

the pvc pipe can be screwed with couple of nails on to the timber x frame and would remove the brace on one end for access to wheel barrow and use two braces on the sides just to be safe - just an idea to share and thanks for posting -

so what do you think of this? I can see some things that could be changed for sure. I am not knocking it but I am sure you came up with different things that could be changed. I would have put a metal pipe through the pvc pipe so the pvc would not sag. I would have also not put the holes around the outside. Nix the fins (looks like step flashing for a roof), I would have put the holes on the ends (sides), lastly I would have used 2x6 and drilled the hole through BOTH diag uppers and have the pipe go through the hole in each piece, no brackets (U-bolts) on the sides. One last thing, I would have also cut the pvc shorter than the metal, probably NOT go through the wood, so that could be the "bearing race surface" that rotates on the static (non-moving) metal pole. Love it, thanks for making the video. I am now going to build one so I can see how it goes. Cheers!

i dont know much about compost tumblers but i figure you could put some sort of catcher underneath, so the fully decomposed material will fall out through the holes and the organic matter that isnt ready wont. this way you could have a steady supply of fully processed compost while still being able to add to you barrel. just an idea
