I appreciate that you did this with the tools you had, when it looks like a lathe project. So often we' look at this and say "I can't get it symmetrical without a lathe, I can't make the ferrule without a welding setup, or something like that, but honestly, all it took was a drill, spoke shave, sandpaper, coping saw. KZbin makes you forget that you can do it without the fancy stuff. As Red Green used to say: "Remember, any tool, is the right tool."

I have never seen one of these used in the coal mines in the eastern U.S. but I have always wanted one. They would come in handy if you are a fireboss and really a section boss as well.

We used these in Boy Scouts. Carved all kinds of handy stuff on them, colored it in with permanent markers then did some heavy coats of epoxy to seal it but a thin layer of fiberglass would do well too.

Hi, nice work, what's the finished length of this?
@ImperialistRunningDo Жыл бұрын
Exactly 3 feet, or one yard. Almost a meter (you could easily make a metric version of this, but that would require ten marks for centemeters!)

Could you steam it and make a crook ?
@ImperialistRunningDo Жыл бұрын
No. And yes. To clarify, a piece of wood that thick would be really hard to steam bend. We have a steam box to bend sides for musical instruments, and we try not to bend pieces thicker than 1/8th of an inch. Here's what you would do: take 8 strips of wood cut to 1/8 inch. They don't have to be the same type of wood -- alternating white maple with black walnut will give you striking results! You need to make a few forms to bend the wood around. If you want a 4 inch diameter crook, cut a 4 inch circle, 4 1/8, 4 1/4, and 4 3/8. Drill several large holes in the circle that clamps will fit in. Steam heat the wood, and clamp the strips and leave them overnight to cool (wood has a "memory" and it will want to return to its original straight orientation). If you try to do all 8 pieces on a single form, the srtips that make up the outside of the form will fight you, because they need a bigger radius. Wear heat-resistant gloves and use lots of caution. Steam will bend wood AND scald you at the same time. Can it be done? Yes. Is it easy? No. Would you end up with a stick to be proud of? Absolutely. I'm sure I'm as clear as mud here. You probably wonder if I even speak English. But buy the book "Make Your Own Walking Stucks" by Charles Self. He does a better job describing the process, and has lots of helpful photos of a jig to use.
@ImperialistRunningDo Жыл бұрын
There's lots of "how to" instructions on how to bend a solid piece of wood into a curve for a walking stick. I can't speak from experience, but I'm sure it could be done.

i used some scrap i had, cost me nothing, i would have to buy brass for a feral.
@ImperialistRunningDo Жыл бұрын
Copper pipe is easy to find. Bloody difficult to keep polished up. Even if you spray it with lacquer, the finish will scrape off. It is, after all, on the end of a walking stick.
@Cxwl9 Жыл бұрын
@@ImperialistRunningDo Yeah I never thought of that it's just the mine deputy usually had a brass one so it won't spark .

@@WeaponCollector You should visit your local scrap yard they would probably give you a piece free or for under a pound
@ImperialistRunningDo Жыл бұрын
@dfp76 (you don't hear this on KZbin much, but...) you are absolutely correct. Copper pipe would work fine. If it turned green, that would just make it look more antique.
