Lovely job you make mate. It’s amazing what you can do with a stick to make it look really good, without having a fancy carved handle etc. I’m going stick cutting next week for the first time in 20 years, (in southern Scotland) and I’m going to have that paracord wrap on a stick. Thank you for the simple video. I've never done woodcrafts before but I am making walking sticks for my Cub Scout Den as they are about to cross over to Boy Scouts. I had to take down a cherry tree two years ago and saw the straight smooth branches and kept them in my garage to dry and cure since then. I been sanding and sanding but wasn't sure how to finish them or seal them! I can't wait to finish them now!

Excellent Video! Thank you for taking the time to share it! Watched video and have stick cleaned up and sanded. Decided to watch video again. Would like to recess the grip but I don’t have the tools as in video. Really like the look of the recessed handle. I’ll figure something out? Thought about either wood file or using my table saw set at approximately 1/16” or so? Hand filing more safe but a bit tedious. Table saw maybe quicker but chance making an error that can’t be fixed as the stick isn’t perfectly round. Anyway, Thanks again for the terrific video!!

I enjoyed that video. You've given me some ideas. I've been making hiking sticks as a hobby since the pandemic started. Nearby parks provide the deadwood. I mostly use boiled linseed oil since it makes patterns in the wood pop! In some cases, I'm not sure I let a couple of sticks dry enough, but the bark in both cases just peeled and flaked off dryly without any trouble, and they showed little or no cracking after being out in the hot weather; so I figure they'll be OK. Oh, I noticed some cracks in one of your sticks. You're convincing me that I'm worrying too much about that!

Yes most of the dead spruce here has cracks in it. If the wood is dry it most likely won't crack or check any more. Call it character and its no longer a crack. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Generally I recommend a longer walking stick. It should be a few inches above your eyeline, or much further lower than your eyeline. When walking if you trip the last thing you want is to poke your eye. Longer is also better because it will help you judge distance and stabilize your walking if you go through a stream or down an incline. All that being said very good work my good sir :)

I used to make canes with saplings similar, but not dead, cut live, and air dried for about 10 years. Nice looking canes, very sturdy. But then one winter I slipped on a slick step, fell, on top of the cane as it happened. Pushed myself up, and found the cane had snapped in two and I had not even realized it. That was the day I started making canes out of layers of plywood. So, as long as you don't fall on the walking stick, should be fine.

Nothing in this case, just wanted to make it as simple as possible. But you could put a ferule on the bottom. They are available at lee valley. It would require an additional step in building but when you are having fun what’s an extra few minutes

Nice work. I've been asked to do one and watched your tying the paracord and have a quick question... approximately how many feet of cord did you use. I know it will vary depending on diameter of the handle but just looking for a rough estimate. Thanks

I purchased a 50 foot length and got three handles out of it with about 8 feet left over. Approx. 15 feet per handle. Hope that helps.

Also i was looking at the way you use it in the end clip and i see that you lift it all the way up, put it in front of you at an agle and then step so essentialy moving your body trough the stick. i allways have my walking stick at angle with the tip pointing back and it never points forward. just an observation.

Do they have to be fully dried before working? I have tons of these little shrub trees that are perfect diameter and hight. Would a green tree work?

Well I think it would work better dried. Less chance of shrinking or cracking after you are done. Green wood would be more flexible which I don't think would work well for a walking stick. You could try it but I can't really say what the results may be.

ever had any issues with the cracks? i cut some aluminum pipe to band a few inches from the small end (ground tip) to prevent it from separating if the crack grows. do you treat cracks in any way? glue?

No issues with cracks, but then the wood is fully dried by the time I make a staff from it. Maybe if the wood is green and dries after finishing it will crack. I have not applied a metal tip as the intent was to make a simple walking stick. They are available through some suppliers. The tip will get rounded and a bit mangled with use but so far no major breakage. Thanks for commenting and watching.

Awesome video! I’m curious as to one part of it seen as I’m getting into making walking sticks myself. At 5:00, you’re using what looks like a sanding wheel attached to a bench grinder. Could you possibly let me know what that is and where to get one.

Thanks for watching. The sander that i'm using is a special sander It is not a bench grinder. It is a flap sander on one side and will accept pneumatic sanding tubes on the other side. I purchased it here in Canada many years ago at a store called Busy Bee Tools. I use it for sanding profiled trim and curved pieces. You could probably get the same result with a random orbital sander. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Hope you walking stick works out.

I purchased the entire sanding machine including flap sander and inflatable sanding tube at a tool supply store called Busy Bee Tools. I am in Canada so not sure if they have outlets elsewhere.

There is no advantage to the spiral. There are lots of different wraps available. The knot used on this walking stick was just a simple half hitch that produced the spiral.

No one should ever go into the woods without a walking stick. I met a big black panther face to face on evening about 4:00 pm while walking on a deer trail and I had no walking stick in hand. It let me go but it could have gone really bad.

Most of the trees I have on my property are spruce so mainly soft wood. I have some Aspen and willow in my 'To Be Used' collection. But You can use anything you want really. As long as it is dry enough to work.

Thanks....I have a couple of goats that I walk with ....they like it when I lead them with something....I guess I'll half to get a one and a quarter inch hard wood stick so it can last longer....everything breaks after a while, but the hard wood will last .....and if I have a really nice one ,well I'll just not use it with the goats...

It puzzles me why so many folk put a hand grip on their staff / stick. This severely limits where the hand goes. Without a specific grip area, your hand can slide instantly to exactly where the grip is most effective for any given situation.

Well, there are no hard and fast rules , I suppose, for making a walking stick. Just because you have a specified grip area does not mean you can not use the rest of the staff to hold on to, for any given situation. Just thought it looks nicer to have a grip.

Ok, but frankly way too complicated. You certainly don't need to cut a grove and then add cord. Just have a plain stick. It's far more comfortable. Also, wear a mask when sanding especially the areas under the bark etc. It's full of fungi spores at that dried out stage.

Yes, Simple in the sense that you could make this without the fancy shop and and tools. It would take a bit longer but it can be done. You could just pick up a stick from the forest and do nothing to it as well. You can also hike or walk without a stick. Any way, Thanks for watching
