Not sure if you've figured this out yet, but concerning the English audio tracks, if you go into the Audio tab in HandBrake you'll see Audio Tracks, and an "Add Tracks" dropdown button you can click to change the audio track you wish to encode with the video. I noticed this after encoding Godzilla Vs. Hedorah when it chose Japanese audio by default. I switched it to English, and it worked. Just a heads up since you mentioned it in the video.

One thing that you should always do with video transcoding in Handbrake is to work with the original frame rate. NTSC DVD’s are 29.97 interlaced frames per second, even though the theatrical movies they carry are 24fps. Blu-ray movies are typically 24fps. Select “Same as original”, and variable frame rate. In filters, you need to concern yourself with de-interlacing DVD content. Select “Decomb”. Most Blu-rays today have 1080p (progressive scan) content, so you can turn that feature off for those types of files. Blu-rays, however, can also have some standard def interlaced video (480i, the same as DVD) for special features, and if this is the case, use the settings previously described for DVD. In the end, matching frame rates and de-interlacing/decombing where necessary will make the movement in your renders look much smoother.
@Robber72 жыл бұрын
How do you determine if you need de-interlacing and fps on the special features of a disk? Can some program tell you this info?
@videoplusdvd2 жыл бұрын
@@Robber7 If it is a Region 1 NTSC DVD, it will ALWAYS require de-interlacing. If it is A DVD, when you capture with MAKE_MKV, you will see the video format. If it’s MPEG-2, you’re most likely looking at SD interlaced video as the source…you are given all the specs when you highlight the title.

When it comes to selecting the best quality format for ripping Blu-ray, MKV is always the top choice since it can encompass audio, video, pictures, and subtitle tracks in one single file while keeping the quality almost intact to that of Blu-rays. What You Need to Rip a Blu-ray to MKV: ● Your Blu-ray discs. ● A Blu-ray disc drive. If your computer came with any disc drive at all, it was probably a DVD drive. However, you'll need a Blu-Ray reader in order to rip your Blu-Ray discs (obviously). An external good Blu-ray drive can be purchased for as little as $25. Note: If you want to rip 4K UHD Blu-rays, you'll need to get a 4K Blu-ray drive. ● A program to rip the files like EaseFab Blu-ray Ripper

For the 'identifying the correct track' thing you were talking about, most bluray titles usually have '100' as the last three digits in the mpls for the English version. Disney blurays (like Marvel or Star Wars), usually have *'800'* as the last three digits in an mpls list for the correct English version. Just look for the last three digits: 100 for most titles, 800 for Disney titles.

@Maraksot784 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure if you'd need to repeat the process or not when the current beta key expires. I haven't been using this method long enough to find out yet. I don't think you will though because you're not using the MakeMKV application. You're just 'borrowing' the .dll files from MakeMKV that contain the info on how to decrypt Blu-Ray disc allowing Handbrake to read and rip discs. The way I believe it works is you won't have to update MakeMKV until a new type of encryption is used the .dll files you have don't contain, and you're no longer able to read or rip a disc. At that point you'll need to update MakeMKV and hopefully they will have updated the .dll files allowing you to circumvent that new type of encryption. At least that's the way I think it works. I guess I'll find out in another week as the current beta key will expire at the end of this month. :D

H265 is HVEC codec which takes less space and keeps quality high. NVENC is Nvidia gpu codec to rip the file in Handbrake faster. I've also found that also using custom settings for 10 bit further reduces space used, while keeping quality higher. Instead of copying dll files, I take the MakeMKV ripped file and directly drop into Handbrake. In Handbrake I use MKV, framerate same as original. I decode or encode to 1080p, hevc x265 10bit (nvenc) or if it's 4k, the same thing except 2160p, instead of 1080p. I use avg bitrate between 11500 kbps and 20000 kbps depending on what movie it is. The higher the bitrate, the better the quality. I have speed set to slow. I use pass-through for audio tracks and retain chapters and forced closed captions and usually the first English available. I saved a preset for 1080p and 4k 2160p to save time.

2024 - I've now updated both Handbrake and MakeMKV, copied the file mentioned in this video, twice (and renaming as directed) and am using the same libdvdcss.dll file from the description's link. I did go through all of the folders and there was not dll file, just project files. I'm not sure if there's a way to generate it from those, but it doesn't matter, because it still worked. MakeMKV would not update through the software, I had to download a new installer for it, which removed the old copy and installed the new. Handbrake updated through the existing software. I likely hadn't updated the software in a year or two, I'm guessing that since my last comment two years ago, I didn't try this. I can confirm that I was able to open up a Blu-ray that I'd just received, that was giving me a DRM error before updating. I'm sure YMMV depending on the DVD/Blu-ray disc.

What is the reason to use the mkvmaker rather than just using the handbreak only? Is it because the source is blue-ray? If it is just dvd, does it still requires the mkvmaker step?

Thanks for the help! Is it weird that my GPU only gets to 3-4% utilization? Is there a way to force it to use more and make the process quicker?
@cracklingice3 жыл бұрын
The encoder does not utilize the full GPU. You also typically don't see much of a difference between high end and low end cards either. GeForce cards are capable of doing up to 3 simultaneous encodes so you may find increased performance if you run two separate copies of handbrake. Depends on how much CPU overhead you have I suppose. I have two going right now and it's using 100% of i7-5960x 4.5ghz and 75% of RTX 3080.

I've added the 2 files to HandBrake but it says "no valid source or title found" I'm using a Blu Ray player trying to rip/ encode a Blu Ray movie but do I need the DVD file even though I'm using Blu Ray?

Thanks for a great guide. But, silly question: So you don't actually use the MakeMV program itself in the process?
@Maraksot784 жыл бұрын
Nope. You just need it to get the .dll files that contain the blu-ray disc decryption data so you can rip the discs with Handbrake. I'm sure there are other ways to get them but this is an easy way to get them and I trust MakeMKV where as I don't know if I can trust other sites that may have the necessary .dll files. Anyway the point of the video was to show how to use GPU encoding to speed things up and how to make Handbrake rip and encode a disc all at once so you don't have to rip with MakeMKV and then import the 20-30GB uncompressed MKV file into Handbrake and then transcode/compress it to a 5-10GB .mp4
@bereantrb3 жыл бұрын
Actually, you do need MakeMKV installed. The dll that gets copied actually opens an instance of MakeMKV in the background.

I've been ripping my DVDs using only MakeMKV without issue. PLEX plays the files and so does VLC. I've ripped 180 DVDs so far and I've barely dented my 6TB HDDs storage capacity. Is there any reason to use Handbrake at all?
@daz712 ай бұрын
If you're ripping an entire DVD your result is typically 6/8GB, after processing in Handbrake that can be reduced to 500Mb/1GB. If you have plenty of storage then the saving may not be worth while. If you're using the video files on other devices then the files from Handbrake can address compatability issues. If ripping Blu Ray disks there's a much larger saving on storage space.

Thanks for the video, it's very helpful. Though I'm coming up with an issue; Handbreak keeps crashing when it finishes scanning the source Blu-Ray. I need help! I tried the mainstream and Nightly build of Handbreak and it still crashes while it's finishing the scan from blu-ray disk source. I've tested it with multiple movies.. It's strange because it was working fine for one Blu-Ray but then started acting up and now won't finish the initial scan for anything.

Seems great, though I got an error within the first few seconds or so, then re-verified I put the copied .dll file x2 into the folder with the proper name for each (and libaacs.dll for the one as in your description), and put the proper one downloaded into the same HandBrake directory. The movie ripped with MakeMKV with no problem. My question is, will Handbrake still do the encoding fast afterward? I'm new to this and have a computer in the other room that's been going since last night decoding a file on Handbrake (per a comment on another video to set the speed to very slow) and will run about another 10 hours or so to finish. If I can get something that'll work anywhere nearly as quick as a couple hours I'll be very happy. I guess I'll find out quickly if doing the Handbrake part with gpu enabled to deal with the file after MakeMKV's part works okay. :D
@Rushtallica3 жыл бұрын
It may be that an update to HandBrake has changed something, and I noticed you have additional files in your HandBrake directory besides the 3 .dll files added in. On another brand new disc, I'm getting the same type of error, queue finished with 1 errors or cancellations after less than a minute. But I was able to take advantage of the information regarding using the GPU and matching output with hvec.265 to do the second half after ripping the files with MakeMKV. Very helpful, and much appreciated! :)

Thanks for the video, it's very instructive. I just upgraded to a new PC that does not have an internal Blu-ray disk drive. I noticed you have an external drive and was wondering what model you have. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I actually had a Blu-ray drive in my previous PC but when I upgraded my new chassis didn't have space for one so I found this drive enclosure on Amazon. www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRUN0HQ?ref=exp_maraksot78_dp_vv_d It will fit any 5.25 inch DVD or Blu-ray drive so if you have one lying around you can just pop it in the enclosure and go. :D

Thanks.. I assume burning 3D blueray is just a matter of selecting the correct 3D track.. (Assume) is that correct? I so far have ripped a standard blue ray, still trying 3D side by side. My Player (internal sata to MB) seems to see all the tracks. Do I need a special DVD player to read 3D?- update: both available tracks on imax under the sea - 3D came out non-side by side?.Thanks..

Sorry, but as a nerd, this is cool af. 🤣 It always AMAZES me to see how much more powerful stuff gets over time. Maybe it's time to build a new 7950X or i9-13900 + 4090 machine! Hahaha

Love this video and everything was working perfectly until a few days ago. When the latest update was pushed (1.6.1) I lost the ability to directly rip my DVDs. It appears that the update has somehow blocked the use of the .dll or altered how it utilizes them? Anyone else have this problem or found a solution? I tried reinstalling the .dlls but with no success. I am still able to rip with MakeMKV and then convert using Handbrake, but it sure was nice to be able to do both in one step!

First of all thanks so much for the very kind compliment. I ran into the same issue using a Ryzen 3 1200 CPU when working on another video. I'm sad to say I didn't investigate it further because I didn't have the time to really sort it out and for the video I didn't really need to. I had that CPU overclocked to 3.8Ghz and I wonder if that overclock wasn't quite stable but like I said I didn't really investigate it so I don't know for sure what was causing it. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I’ve ripped some DVDs with makemkv thinking nothing was wrong but sometimes in the middle of the film it just skips ahead 10 seconds, or skips to the end of the film and stops playing. I’m not sure what I am doing wrong.

Really? That's very strange. I haven't had this problem at all. In fact, if my film doesn't rip properly the entire process is bust. I don't even know how what you're describing is possible. You do go through a verification process at the start don't you? And, maybe your drive is defective. I mean the disk reader.

Since I use Plex for my CD and Bluray rips listening/watching, I prefer to rip my movie Blurays with MakeMKV only. I only need to use Handbrake to transcode if the video is output as a VC type instead of H264 since Plex doesnt like VC and will then take up more CPU and transcoding time on your server to change the quality to a format (H264) that it CAN handle. This saves me extra time and MakeMKV can export the movie with only the ONE or TWO sound fields I want incuded and nothing else in a much faster time than Handbrake which takes a LOOOOONG time
