I assume you're talking about MakeMKV... I misspoke when I said MakeMKV is open source; it is not. It is free to use while it is in beta as long as you have the current beta key. Make MKV has been "in beta" for a number of years now and doesn't appear it will ever advance beyond that. Meaning it will probably always be free to use; you just have to go to their forum for the updated beta key every couple of months. Here's a link to the current beta key www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1053 All you have to do is open MakeMKV click on 'Help' and then 'Register' and copy the beta key into the field that says 'Enter Registration Code' and you should be good to go. If that doesn't work, uninstall MakeMKV, download the installer from their website put in the key and you should be good. Show less

You are the Genesis of my success with my new Blu-Ray drive! Two weeks ago I bought the first Blu-Ray drive that I have ever bought for my computer! To my shock, I was not able to play my Blu-Ray movies in the drive! I knew that the drive was working, I just had to find out why I could not play my Blu-Ray movies. Within three days of researching the problem, I ran across your video here !! It set me on the right track of fixing my problem. I can now make high quality copies of my Blu-Ray disk, that will play on any media player. That is great, but I still wanted the ability to play my Blu-ray movies from the disk in the drive. After doing some more research, I found out how to tweak the VLC media player to play my Blu-Ray movies from the disk in the drive. So I did the tweaks of the VLC Media player, and it Failed !! But then this morning, a thought came to my head from something that I had read in a Reddit forum, that after you do the tweaks of the VLC media player, to enable Anydisk, which I had not done. So I enabled Anydisk and opened the VLC Media player to start my Blu-Ray movie, and SUCCESS, my movie was playing from my new Blu-Ray drive !! I did not provide all the details of my success here, but you are the MAJOR reason for my success !! At best, I am a computer novice !! So if I can do it, then anyone can do it with some research and study !! But I owe you ((( ALL ))) the THANKS for my success !! THANK YOU !!!

MakeMKV - When you choose the file to copy, expand the check mark, there you can deselect/select languages, choose subtitles also decide on what type of soundtrack like stereo, Dolby digital etc. I find this helpful because I choose to keep DD, 7.1 SURROUND and sometimes stereo depending. Also, I remove alternate audio and languages like french etc. Doing this will reduce the file size from say 30 gigs to maybe 25 gigs or more.

oh that was going to be my question: I need subtitles. I know how to edit them, add a different sub source into handbrake etc, but I couldn't figure out how to rip my blurays. Do you know if MakeMKV encodes the subs into the file or does it have a separate sub file? I'd love a separate file as I can correct the spelling on the subs before going to handbrake. I get handbrake to soft code my subs. Or I just use MKV toolnix GUI to add the subs and encode to MKV. They do a much better job to encode from mp4 to MKV than handbrake and they do it within minutes.
@bccabernet4 жыл бұрын
thank you so much. I did this last night and it does soft-code the subs (rather than a separate file). I could even see the different languages in the options, so I could uncheck the ones I won't need. Thank you so much for this information. I am surprised it is taking so long for handbrake to encode the MKV file. So far, it's at 10 hours with 1 (est.) more hour to go for handbrake! I can't watch movies without the subs, so this is huge for me. Cheers!

I use the old DVD shrink freeware from Germany about the 2001. This before smartphones or streaming which I jokingly called dreaming at the time and used convert to cell phone size by KZbin in those years.I was able to convert my favorites From Star Wars to life-force to caddy shack to eventually smartphone. To this day I still have the copies 20 years on. I'm 51 now and just use process for fair use copy for backup. DVD shrink freeware that is awesome in its being able to still be used while other software died like a dodo bird. With new operating systems not comparable. I'm talking to much but I like the info and the fact you can still do this all these years later. Keep it up. Since my stroke 2015 has changed my priorities and focus. Have only been able work on DVD lately. 😎😎

For the title selections I will say if you're ripping a movie go with the largest file size. if it's a TV show and you want to have them individual episodes select all the title except for the largest one or else you're going to have all the episodes in one video. This works for me.

@Tru3Tech5 жыл бұрын
barriusaquarius hq 1080p 30 Surround profile will encode the movie to maximum 30 fps. If your movie that you want to encode has 23.976 fps than the encoded movie will also have 23.976. See handbrake documentation. It encodes up to 30 fps, so if original file has less fps the resulting file will have the same
@jk-4743 жыл бұрын
If you’re using handbrake, find the original frame rate or your movie or show, most movies run at 23-24 FPS, Handbrake automatically defaults to 30 frames which is incorrect for movies and films, 30 is what they film TV shows in, but make sure you change the frame rate to match what your source was originally encoded in for best results!

5:16 Wrong, you need to open up the file first to select subtitle and audio track / language options. MKVs are not only lossless, they can also preserve the chapters, audio tracks and subtitles available on the disk. This is very important when you are showing movies to older relatives whose hearing is failing. Some movies are better in a foreign language with subtitles than a dubbed version due to annoying voice actors who think they are being clever. And finally, movies, such as "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" have such thick accents that you need the subtitles to enjoy the movie (it is a far better movie with subtitles than without). In addition, I remove the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" text. If you leave it in, even if you change the file name, it remains embedded in the file. This can cause uncontrollable consequences as some programs will use meta-data in preference to the file name. To fix the problem, you may need to re-copy the disk. I just spent two years converting my movies to MKV digital, and had spent a year and a half converting my movies to MP4 before deciding that having no artifacts as well as keeping audio, chapters and subtitles intact was worth starting over. You should also name your movie and TV Shows in a standard format for Plex or Kodi. Filebot is well worth learning to use for TV Shows. Just use the MovieDB for the correct name: Legend of the Guardians The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010) so that software, such as Plex, can automatically find the movie using the MovieDb agent.

Great How-to Video!! Odd as it may seem in today's world, inquiring minds would like to know if you could extract the main title only from a DVD9 movie and burn it back to a DVD5 disc in DVD format for use on an older stand-alone DVD player? In my "wish list" also might be to use no more compression than is necessary to fit the extracted title on the DVD5 disc for any selected audio and video settings. And of course, using free software would be a plus. Seems like long ago the combo of DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink provided at least some of that capability by first decoding to a hard drive and then shrinking and burning to a DVD5 disc.

Nice tutorial - one other reason to compress versus going all purist 1:1 copy - is the strain large files put on you network. Large files doesnt stream very well on older and /or bottlenecked networks. I get a lot of stuttering when streaming large files to my gen 1. Chromecast using plex. Cant really use it unless i kick the rest of the family of the wifi - an unpopular solution. Compressed movies do a lot better though :-)

Hi, quick question.. Is there a reason why you use MakeMKV to rip the Blu Ray / DVD when you could just use Handbrake to rip in the first place??
@Maraksot784 жыл бұрын
To answer your question it's just because I hadn't looked in depth into what needs to be done to allow Handbrake to rip a Blu-Ray. Since you mentioned it I decided to look and found you can copy the libmmbd64.dll file twice from MakeMKV into the HandBrake folder in Windows Explorer, rename them to libbdplus.dll and libaacs.dll and Handbrake can then rip Blu-Rays. I'm actually giving it a go right now as I'm typing this to you with NVEnc enabled as well (since I have an Nvidia Graphics card) to see how much this will simplify and speed up the process. Thanks for prompting me to dig a little deeper and learn some more. Thumbs up to you. :)

@Maraksot784 жыл бұрын
I actually haven't thought of that yet. Nice tip though. Thanks. Just as an update on how using Handbrake and Nvidia NVENC to rip and transcode went... It worked great. I did have to download another .dll file from VideoLAN.org to be able to rip DVD's also but once all that was done Handbrake rips discs great and then goes right into transcoding them. With NVENC enabled my RTX 2070 Super can encode a 2 hour 1080p blu-ray using the HQ 1080p30 Surround preset in about 20 minutes! I should probably specify it does take 15 or 20 minutes to rip the disk first and then another 20 to transcode. But 40-ish minutes for the whole process is pretty freakin' sweet. I'll take that over the way I was doing it before any day. New video is already in the works. XD lol

I’m considering trying to compress them in handbrake, is there a way to do this into a smaller mkv?
@rjfortez37195 жыл бұрын
Awesome vid!! Using makemkv will I be able to retain the audio such as Dolby Atmos or DTS or will that be lossed when I add to handbrake. I like the smaller size option to convert, but would like to remain true audio for my surround system

Thanks for checking out the video and for the question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that because I haven't really looked into that in depth. My primary reason for ripping all my DVD's and Blu-rays was to put them onto a portable Plex server my kids can stream from while we're on road trips. Since they're just watching them on tablets and since they're just kids I haven't given much thought to audio. I just looked it up and it appears MakeMKV can copy the Dolby Atmos tracks but I'm not sure if there's anything special you need to do before ripping a disc to do it. As for using Handbrake, I tried to find some info but I don't have a lot of time to look into it at the moment and the quick Google search I did just now on it didn't offer much help. Sorry I'm not much help in this regard. Perhaps this could be the topic of a future video. Best of luck to you. Cheers! :)

You can choose the audio format in Handbrake, and can also choose to allow passthrough where it makes a direct copy of the audio.

Maraksot78 , Hey, when you made your personal copy of Fantastic Beasts; did the quality match an iTunes Hd version, and did it look just as clear on a 65” tv? Thanks.

@Maraksot785 жыл бұрын
@@4rcgv I can't speak to how my personal copy looks compared to an iTunes HD version but I did a quick little test and streamed a few minutes of it on VUDU paying very close attention to the overall picture quality on my 60" 1080p Samsung TV (which looked really good to me by the way) and then watched my .mp4 copy and I honestly can't say I noticed a difference. The image may have been slightly less sharp but I say 'may have been' because it looked so similar to me that I don't know if there really was a difference.
@Maraksot785 жыл бұрын
@@4rcgv I have not tried the AppleTV preset. Looking at the settings in Handbrake though it looks like the Apple 1080p30 Surround has the quality setting at 22, where as the HQ 1080p30 Surround I usually use is at 20. The higher the number the higher the quality. Also the other difference I see is the encoder preset is on Slow for the preset I use and the Apple one is on Medium. Slower encoding does take more time but it is supposed to offer a better result, although in this situation if I encoded a movie using both settings and played them side by side I would guess there would be no noticeable difference since the settings are so close to one another. Other than that all the other settings seem to be the same.

Oh my god, I've been using MakeMKV for years and did not know you could right click and select "Unselect All." I once had a Blu-Ray disc that had so many individual tracks and was sitting there in pain unselecting each check box. I feel so dumb right now.
@Maraksot785 жыл бұрын
it's all good. I did the same thing several times before I figured it out. XD lol After doing it on a couple different discs I thought, "there has to be another way" so I tried right clicking just to see what would happen and I was overjoyed to see the unselect all option. :)

When I use the MakeMKV and Handbrake method my movies are always in megabytes, here are the movies I've made digital backups of so far. A Bugs Life (1998) Batman (1989) Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy! (2006) The Halloween Tree (1993) The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1996) Toy Story (1995) Toy Story 2 (1999) Toy Story 3 (2010) Maybe it's just that all of those other then Batman (1989) were animated movies and animated movies are usually shorter then live action movies but I don't know, oh the movies are still in great quality but I'm just saying.

You'll need an external blu-ray drive for your computer. A blu-ray player is just a player, not the same thing as a drive for a computer.

Can't Handbrake be used for all the steps? Why would you need MakeMKV? Is it to split the encoding phase and ripping phase to decrease the time that the disc reader is busy? Just so you can batch encode files?

Hey Brian: I used Handbrake to do A back up of a movie I already owned using HQ 1080p, and while it took way too long to encode; the quality is flawless. My question to you is do you think if I use fast 1080p encoding will give me the same results?
@Maraksot785 жыл бұрын
You can give it a try. It's been a long time since I first messed around with the different settings so I dont remember what the fast setting looks like. I just remember I was happiest with the quality of the 1080p 30 HQ

@Maraksot785 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing you're talking about old 4:3 aspect ratio stuff. Stuff that was formatted to fit old square TV screens? As far as I know the only way to get them to wide screen (16:9 aspect ratio) is to either stretch them out horizontally which looks like poo or buy a new wide screen copy... assuming one exists. I have just come to accept the fact that some of my old stuff is only 4:3. I know you were probably hoping for something better, unfortunately that's all I've got for now. Go Hawks!!!

Hi, Great video! I'm busy ripping all my blurays now! I was just wondering, is there also a UHD friendly external or internal bluray drive to be purchased so that I can rip my UHD discs? Isn't it better to skip the Makemkv step and go right forward to the Handbrake proces?
@Maraksot785 жыл бұрын
I just did a quick search online for UHD drives and it looks like they do exist (I didn't know if they did or not as I don't own any 4K discs). They're pretty expensive but that's to be expected. (over $100 US) Since I don't own any 4K discs I haven't looked into copying them with MakeMKV so I just Googled it and it appears it is possible but there are some hoops you've got to jump through. As for just using Handbrake... to the best of my knowledge Handbrake is just an encoding tool it is not able to decrypt discs on its own which is why you decrypt the disc with MakeMKV and then encode it to a smaller file or different container (aka file type) with Handbrake.
@michaellaw21475 жыл бұрын
@@Maraksot78 Thanks a lot for checking, I now know that for the time being, it is quite expensive to rip a UHD disc, so let's hope the price of UHD drives will soon become more affordable.

Thank you for making this video, I have been using MakeMKV for like 3 or 4 years now. I learned something I didn't know. It never dawned on me to right-click on the file description window and to select unselect all. On DVD's it usually was no big deal to click the checkmarks for each file you didn't want to rip. But on Blu-Rays, some of them would have so many it was a pain in the butt to unselect so many. It makes me wonder what all else I don't know about MakeMKV. I have one problem I haven't figured out though. For some reason, the audio seems a little low on playback from Plex to my Roku's. I have to turn the volume up to watch them and then turn the volume back down when watching regular TV. I haven't tried using HandBreak yet since Roku can play MKV files in Plex with no problems.

Isn't there some sort of player you can purchase and either directly tranfer your DVD or bluray to digital or buy said movie digitally from some online store and download it on that device and have the sheer convenience as you would with streaming but without any compromises being made to picture quality and Audio? I'm tired of swapping discs, but i also hate the audio from streaming and the removal of shows that i like to watch every now and then. Sure you can buy movies from Prime Video, KZbin etc but you're just unlocking a streaming movie that you can watch any time you want but with the same crappy audio and inferior picture quality.
