Congratulations for the tutorial. However, the way you have done make ones rely always on the seed created. That means that every time one have to sign a transaction, would have to use that seed to recover the could storage, since it is the only one which can sign transactions. There's then a better way. You create a encrypted partition into the usb sticker and save a copy of your wallet into it. That means that you, once tails is on, off line always, you just have to load that wallet from the encrypted partition.

This is the best dirt cheap way to generate some wallets. With some more research, you can learn how to create two tails usbs (one offline signer and one online). The one that stays offline can still sign transactions in an air-gapped way, while the online one can view and broadcast transactions. The way they showed works just fine, though, especially if you do not plan to move funds from the wallet.

At the end of the day, the bitcoin are just associated with a random number, which is the private key. If you know the private key, you can sign transactions and then broadcast them to the bitcoin network.

No wallet stores Bitcoin on it. Bitcoin always lives on the blockchain. When you purchase Bitcoin from an exchange, what is transferred to you is control of that Bitcoin, it has not left the blockchain. The control mechanism is your private key. When you "move" Bitcoin from the exchange to your wallet, what you are doing is authorizing a different private key, the one generated with your wallet, to now control the Bitcoin. Nothing actually "moves". Hope that helps.

Very good video, the only part I would disagree a little is the very last part, handling the seed is a delicate process it is best to use for emergencies, at that point you are better off using that same tailsos with a trezor T, ledger X, or coldcard, coldarcard mk3 is the most secure and uses electrum as the wallet, all 3 can use electrum as the wallet.

I'm missing something here. I'm familiar with Tails. It saves NOTHING. I'm obviously incorrect thinking that the wallet is a dataset file of some sort. So... 1) Once you close Tails, what happens to the wallet you just created? 2) How do you get coins into the wallet? 3) What good is it if you cannot take coins out of the wallet?

I was thinking the same thing. For someone doing this the first time, there is a lot they did not cover. It can be difficult to conceptualize where an address is coming from and where it is going to, and where it is stored

This is the trickiest part and the answer depends on your computer manufacturer, so there's no general answer. Select Boot from USB on the start up sequence, but it can still fail. Your computer won't recognize the USB as a normal USB after flashing...it's only for booting.

You don't. However, the algorithm generating the keys provides more possibilities than there are atoms in the universe, so it's basically impossible to generate the same key twice.

Why would you need multiple USB drives? You are not using persistent storage so don't those USB drives become identical after reboot? If you want to create multiple cold wallets & each resides on its own USB drive then you will have to use persistent storage.

While Colin is technically right, his monosyllabic answer is quite myopic. To answer your questions in order: 1. No, Bitcoin is NOT the only crypto worth putting in cold storage. ALL of your crypto that you do not plan to trade on an exchange with should be placed in cold storage. 2. Bitcoin is the only crypto that can be stored ON ELECTRUM. If you want to store other crypto's this way, you would need to install other wallets in TailOS, which would be a more involved process.

Anyone considering putting their bitcoins only on one usb drive be very, very careful! USB flash are known to fail. For your own good put your precious crypto on multiple flash drives not just one and store them at multiple secret locations not just your house!

@@andymassacre The flash drive is only a way to use Tails OS. The bitcoin are actually associated with the seed phrase, not the flash drive. If you want more security, consider creating a 2of3 multisig using Electrum and then you'd have three seeds that could be stored in separate locations.

I can control access to my USB stick with being discrete and a vault. I CANT control when USB fails (and they have commonly failed me in the past)

OK, I'm a noob, but I boot up Tails, open Electrum and my wallet is disappeared. I figure that since I disabled persistence, my wallet file gets wiped when I close Tails. I guess I have to create a new wallet every time I want to use it, using my seed phrase. Why no mention of this in the video? That's quite an oversight.

SHA-256 is standard practice for checksums and cryptographic security. There are more powerful hash functions available, but they're not necessary for this purpose. The software creators report the SHA256 hash for their software, which is what our SHA256 hash is being compared to. A better method of validating software is to use a PGP signature, but it is a little complicated for this simplified tutorial.

As long as youre completely okay with anyone else with physical access to your USB to completely PWN you. What would stop a hacker from installing a keylogger to Tails if they had your USB? This video is good for a beginner, but I dont think beginners should be creating major security flaws while thinking they are safe.

A few scripts can be written to check the integrity of the system processes as well as expected running kernel modules. When ready to turn “on” the internet, any data that must remain secure can be on a separate partition or logical volume, unmounted and encrypted before the system begins any network, wifi, or bluetooth services. This can be managed automatically by systemd and a few simple shell scripts.

This is not a "major security flaw" there are many ways to get around what you said. If you don't have a space place, calculate the SHA256 of the USB stick to know it hasn't been modified before you boot into it.
