SO YOU WANT TO CREATE THE BEST DIY COOKIE KIT EVER?
I've been getting A LOT of questions from other cookie decorators and hobby bakers about how I create my super popular DIY sugar cookie kits. This video is an in-depth deep dive at what materials and supplies I use to put these boxes together. They're great fun for kids, families, and even adults - especially with a lot of people being at home a bit more than usual right now.
Perhaps you do your kits a little differently. Did I miss anything? If so, I'd love to hear your feedback! Talk among eachother in the comments below. Share information, tips, and ideas. I'd love to make this page the ultimate sugar cookie kit resource for EVERYONE.
-----
VIDEO UPDATES (THINGS I MISSED):
As a general rule of thumb, include atleast 1/2 oz or 15g of icing per cookie in your kit. I do like to add extra (around 20g per cookie) because kiddies love a little extra icing. As for consistency - it should be a medium consistency - not outline/stiff/detail, and not flooding. An outline or stiff consistency may break the piping bags if the kids squeeze too much (and the hole in the opening is too small) and a flooding consistency will just be too messy and get everywhere. Try to think back to when YOU were a kid and imagine what the process is like in their shoes when you're creating your kits! ***
Having trouble with getting the perfect medium royal icing consistency?

SUPPLIES:
Most of these supplies can be bought from places like ULine or Amazon, but I encourage you to also check out your local packaging and baking supply stores, as well. Support local, support the little guys - they can always use your business, especially now during these trying times. (I'm writing this in May 2020).
Some of my local favourites (in the Southwestern Ontario, Canada area) for a lot of these supplies including bags, boxes, cookie cutters, and sprinkles, are:
Flour Confections:
www.flourconfections.com/
McCalls Chocolate & Baking Supplies:
mccalls.ca/
Creative Bag:
www.creativebag.com/
Vanilla Food Company:
www.vanillafoodcompany.ca/
Sweet Shapes Co:
sweetshapes.co/
How Sweet Is That?
howsweetisthat.ca/
They're all wonderful companies. YES - they're all Canadian. I'm a Canadian cookier! But the bonus is that IF you're from the U.S, you'll save even more with these companies because of the CAD/USD exchange rate. If you've got a favourite local company, shout them out in the comments below so that other watchers in YOUR area can give them their business, too!

You could definitely do an example cookie, yes! You could take photos of the example cookies to show what can be made. You could also draw out the designs on paper and include it with your kit. Offering a demonstration video that you've made is also a nice personal touch. There are lots of options!

I love this tutorial - I must've watched it ten times already. I'm gearing up to make some DIY Thanksgiving and Christmas kits to raise money for the holidays for my little ones. We lost everything in a lightning-strike house fire in September. I want this to be successful and as beautiful as yours. But the thought of baking over 100 cookies and making/bagging multiple batches of frosting all in one or two days is stressing me out. lol I'm thinking about making the dough ahead and freezing it. Do you recommend baking all of the cookies fresh a day or two before pickup or have you personally baked the cookies and frozen them to preserve freshness until pickup/delivery? Just trying to make this as easy as possible on myself while juggling two little ones! (I've done decorated sugar cookies for my kids parties in the past, so I'm not totally a newbie to sugar cookies) Thanks in advance!!
@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 2 жыл бұрын
YES - You can do ALL of this. Break up your steps any way that you need to in order to make things easier! Less stress, more fun. Go ahead and make that sugar cookie dough ahead of time and freeze it. You could even bake your cookies ahead of time and freeze them, as well - just make sure they are well sealed! I like a ziploc freezer bag inside an airtight container for this. You can even make your royal icing ahead, too - freeze or keep in the fridge. Just as a test, I've made cookies ahead of time and frozen them. After defrosting, they taste exactly the same - as long as you make sure they are well sealed to keep them safe from freezer smells and frost, nobody will know they've been frozen! Not even you (but probably, if you were the one who put them in the freezer, hahah).

@@SweethartBakingExperiment Thank you soooo much!! Do you have any tips on how you do it efficiently? What is the maximum number of orders you take for a holiday? Is it pickup or do you deliver? (If you deliver, do you charge a fee?) So many questions, but I opened up 25 spots for DIY kits and sold out in less than 12 hours. More people want to order, but for obvious reasons I'm apprehensive. lol For what it's worth, I am making a "buttercream" that hardens slightly instead of royal icing. It pipes out perfectly fine (I tested, of course) I'm testing out the longevity of it this week, since royal icing lasts "forever". lol

Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoy my channel! Sugar cookies AND royal icing actually freeze quite well, so as long as you package them very well, you could make everything up to a few months in advance, really. You could make a big batch of royal icing, freeze it, and then when you need it, you can colour it and package it into icing bags. Same goes for the sugar cookies. You can bake them ahead of time, no problem. As long as you package them to protect them from the freezer (freezer burn, freezer smells, etc.) - I would put them in a large freezer bag or in plastic and then in a large container. Hope that helps!

The great thing about royal icing (especially when it's made from meringue powder) is that it's shelf stable, meaning it doesn't need to be refrigerated. These kits, when it comes to freshness of the cookies and icing, will last at room temperature for a few weeks atleast - although I've had people use them after this amount of time. All you can do is make suggestions - people will ultimately make their own decisions. They can be frozen, too! You'll want to mention in your instructions that the icing will separate and each bag will need to be gently kneaded to re-mix the ingredients.

@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 3 жыл бұрын
The icing will be fine at room temperature for a few days (if you make it with meringue powder). It is fine at room temperature for atleast a few weeks, actually. Some people say up to a month or so, but honestly - I'd say 1-2 weeks because otherwise you start running into issues like your cookies becoming stale, too. If your customers don't get to it within 1-2 weeks, you could suggest that they freeze the kit. The colour WILL separate from the icing after sitting for a day or so, this is unavoidable. The more thin your icing, the faster it'll happen. This is why in your instructions you must state to the customer (and I mention this in the DIY Kit sample instructions in the description) that they should gently knead the icing bag for 1-2 minutes to re-mix the icing before using.

What’s a reasonable price for a kit this size? It takes time to bake cookies, make and color icing plus the cost of materials and advertisements/ instructions.
@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! That's totally going to be based on your own costs, but from what I've seen, a kit this size usually goes between $20 to $30+. But once you get into custom kits where people choose icing colours, sprinkle mixes, shapes, themes, etc, obviously the cost should reflect that, as well. :)

You could get lucky and people will be super gentle with them when and if they knead them (sometimes the icing doesn't end up separating too much and doesn't need to be kneaded). @SweethartBakingExperiment

I have shipped them to friends and family, yes. Use LOTS of bubble wrap, and you'll be just fine. Since I use meringue powder and not fresh egg whites, the icing is shelf stable (though it will separate) so you can realistically keep it fresh at room temperature for a month or so! If they aren't using it right away, they freeze great too.

How big are your cookies? I have a couple cutters that are 3-3.5” and they seem a bit small for a DIY... but I’m not sure!
@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 3 жыл бұрын
If your cutters are a little on the smaller side, you could always offer more cookies! But most of the cookies inside my boxes are in the 4-4.5" size. Or I'll offer a little variety of sizes. Maybe one or two of them might be smaller. Sometimes you'll get younger kiddies that are decorating that might not want to eat such a giant cookie, and the little sizes are much better for that! :)

Hi what is the shelf life of the cookies and icing?
@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 9 ай бұрын
A few months if they freeze it! At room temp, I wouldn't let it sit much longer than a few weeks - assuming you used meringue powder in your icing and not fresh egg whites.

Thank you for your tips. How long can keep the icing in the chiller? How long can it stay in room temperature?
@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 3 жыл бұрын
If you make your royal icing with meringue powder, it's actually safe at room temperature for up to a few weeks or so, though it WILL separate. You'll need to re-mix it. Frozen, you can make ahead and keep it for several months if you package it well enough to keep it safe from freezer-burn and freezer smells.

@@Gina-nd7ve At room temperature the royal icing is fine for a few weeks (some people say up to a month) if you're making it with meringue powder. But if you FREEZE the royal icing, it is fine for several months if you package it well enough to keep it safe from the elements. :)

Do you have any guidance on how much sprinkles to include?
@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! I would say atleast a teaspoon per cookie is a good rule of thumb. For this kit of 8 cookies, I gave 1 tablespoon per sprinkle (3 different sprinkles) and there are 3 teaspoons in 1 tablespoon. Lately, I've been offering kits with 6 cookies - 2 sprinkle cups (1 tablespoon each) and 12 cookies - 3 sprinkle cups (1 1/2 tablespoons each - which is about 4.5 teaspoons each). So that averages out to about 1 teaspoon for each cookie! That's enough for them to decorate for even the most heavy handed sprinkler (and they may still have some left to gobble up).

are you able to sell these without any licensing?
@SweethartBakingExperiment
@SweethartBakingExperiment 3 жыл бұрын
That's up to your discretion, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it. I operate out of a licensed kitchen, and the rules are absolutely different everywhere you go. Churches, community centres, and restaurants are great options for licensed kitchens (for a very small cost) if you'd like to make a large batch of kits and sell them, legally - even if you were a small business or hobby baker. :) Your local health unit will have all the answers!

Buy what you can and put aside. When you have enough for, lets say 2 kits... sell them, get that money to get more supplies. Build up from there. I am doing the same thing here. I dont use the money I make for my personal use, I get what I really need for my next batch. (I am now looking into these kits.... great info here... But I actually bake cake pops and cookies. barely started.. I don't see the end of the tunnel yet, but I keep at it.) like the turtle... easy does it!
