Been riding ghetto tubeless on my mtb for quite some time with great success & this is the same process as I've done myself but obviously on a road wheel rather than mtb. You must get the tyre on tight so plenty of tape & do buy a valve with a removable core. When you have the tyre & sealant in place use soapy water as it helps to seat the tyre & in order to get air in quickly simply remove the core!! The track pump should then get a lot of air into the tyre. Remove the pump hose, cover valve with a finger before inserting the core. Rotate the wheel so the sealant goes to where any leaks are. It can be time consuming & you need to be patient but when it comes to punctures this system really works a treat.

I been riding Cx tubeless for a few years now , and try about any tire wheel combo there is , my only advise is , always make sure your front wheel is extra good , why ,because if that baby burps any air , you may not like the result . Vitoria TNT is by far the best option that I have come across . Keep up the good work GCN
@SuperV510 жыл бұрын
I always check to see if the tire/rim combination will inflate before I add any sealant, this way less mess is created. Also, if you are having difficulties getting the tire to inflate, you can always pop a tube in and inflate the tire. Once the ire is inflated you can then take off one side of the tire and remove the tube. This way one side of the tire is already seated in the rim and you will have less air leaking out all over the place.
@genie211610 жыл бұрын
Interesting concept. I am happy to see GCN posting videos reusing stuff and not just suggesting people go out and invest in a particular product. Tubeless systems can be quite expensive (I have been asking around) and this is a good cheap alternative, if it works with what you have. Thanks!

I have not done this with road wheels, but have had good success with DIY sealant (just check the superb forum on homemade sealant). The only technique difference I would recommend is to orient the wheel horizontally and shake it vigorously. Flip to get the opposite side down, and repeat. It can be quite messy, but if you shake it enough, and keep adding sealant, it should work eventually. Orient horizontally. Shake vigorously. Pump fast. Repeat. The guys making their own sealant have had great results. I have some wheels that are tubeless with the same sealant in them for over two years. They are still holding air and no punctures that I have noticed.
@HulluJanne5 жыл бұрын
I've just used a classic rim tape, a size smaller inner tube cut on the top and spreaded out of the rim. Insert tire and sealant, pump it up and cut the excess inner tube with razor blade. It helps if you clean the inner tube and the edge of the tire with IPA, for example to get "bare" rubber surface and best possible seal. Of course this way won't save as much weight but the seal between two rubber surfaces should be very good and it may not be so prone to "burping" from the side. I think you could run it without the rim tape and use a few layers of electric tape or some other type of tape to save weight.
@echtogammut10 жыл бұрын
I use Velocity rim plugs, then apply a layer of electrical tape on top of that. You do want to stretch the electrical tap as that will ensure an airtight seal, electrical tape is designed to be elastic. I use this method whether I am running tubeless or tubes as it is lighter than rim tape, but offers me the ability to switch back and forth.
@abedfo884 жыл бұрын
I just did this with some gorilla tape and stans sealant on bog standard Mavic XM319 (i think) rims. Worked like a charm with 42mm WTB resolutes on the gravel bike, both wheels went up with the track pump first time!

I find it is easier putting the tape on while the wheel is in a truing stand. :) Also, once you get the right amount of tape, it would be best to inflate the tire with a tube to help compress the tape fully.

There is a better Method than electrical tape! Use ja smaler Innertube, like a 26er. applly it on the rim. cut it open an put it above the rim sidewall. apply the tire + sealant. Works much better! Last step cut the showing rest of the innertube.

That's what I was going to say. I also use a CO2 cannister to blast the tyre up and seal it quickly. Then spin the wheel around with the sealant inside and it eventually seals closed.

Split tube Ghetto Tubeless is the term for this method. Just search that term here on YT plenty of vids. Works amazing on Fat Bike 26x4 just use a 24x3 fat tube (next size down) and once you follow the method your tires will hold perfectly. Im considering trying this on my narrower CX / Gravel wheels.

The electrical tape trick worked like a charm. I put on one layer of Stan's tape initially and it failed. But I think the rubber part of the tubeless valve was in the way. As Simon notes, I loosened the valve prior to seating the tire, then tightened it up once the tire was mounted (I was using a Stan's injector, making life somewhat easier). I am curious if the electrical tape actually made the difference, or if it was loosening the valve?

Great video -- I like the outside-the-box thinking. But it seems like you may be overlooking the obvious when it comes time to inflate the tire. Why not use a CO2 inflator? Or better yet, a hybrid hand pump that also includes a CO2 inflator. Many of them allow you to control the inflation rate so you don't overdo it. This will give you the quick burst of air you need to achieve the seal more easily without the need for an air compressor. Using a standard hand pump seems like the hardest possible way to do it -- but it was fun to watch. :-)

+Crimson Sunrise I wouldn't do that on a road or cross tire. you need a lot more pressure, and having the extra rubber under the bead is likely to let it blow off the rim. that method does work really well with fat mountain tires, though, which you can run at really low pressures.

No 2 : They SHIFT(Yes,they do shift) No 3 : They leave sticky residue and it is a MESS to clean up from rims! (Use Iso. Alcohol to clean it up) No 4 : They get punctured by rim holes in time with pressure(Even if you apply 10 layers!,trust me!) Use inner tubes n cut em, they are way x way better than tapes! I think BikeRadar made one years ago... This method is very DANGEROUS.
