I am very tempted to try your techniques, which I appreciate for your efforts and suggestions. Most of the clients I sell my crystals to would not like the added gold dipping if chemicals are used. But some people will buy them strictly for the decorative nature of the gold or silver dippings. Anyway, thank you for all of your ideas and how to make things work.

This looks pretty good! The only difference between this and the gold dipped seems to be that the gold dipped in more bumpy and imperfect, but I imagine you could achieve the same thing on your bead/stone by creating artificial ridges using dried super glue, then putting gold leaf over that.

I really enjoyed and loved your work. I also work with my hands so I totally get it. I was saying to my self "is that how messy I look when I work lol lol". Everybody thinks that-that glue E6000 you used is the BEES KNEES, but I think it stinks. I habeen making jewelry for over 40 years now and had struggled with glues through the years. My dad use to bring home a mix epoxies from work you had to mix together to try to help me. Some mix black, brown, grey, but one use to turn light tan and I would use that in teeny tinny drops with nail polish. Sometimes crazy glue wasn't so crazy and didn't stick lol. This is what I have been using for years on everything "LOCTITE EPOXY QUICK SET MULTI-PURPOSE" I watch you struggle with that glue and silver ring on that glop of glue. With LOCTITE just push a little ball out mix together (clear of course ) put amount on then ring.....and dry. Works on all surfaces and also comes in a 5 minute one if you think your going to need more time for set up or putting pieces together plus the regular one too. Get at Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot type stores, Hardware, even Pharmacies. Great stuff!!!! I hope you give it a try. Again, thanks for your video, because I'm going to give it a try.......the one with the ring. Lovely very lovely.

Hi Hawah, Thanks for your question, I did try paint and they look is quiet different than with the leaf. I really prefer the leaf. I believe the paint will stay, I would put a few coats on and allow the paint to dry between layers. If you want added protection you can add sealer, but I think it's less essential with the paint than it is with the leaf. I hope this helped. :) Denise

I used 3dimentional mod podge as glue, to glue the jumping as an experiment... And it honestly works SO good, it dried like cement, I even hit it with a hammer and it didn't budge. It's really unexpectedly heavy duty and doesn't have the bad smell of e6000. You just have to wait a little bit longer to make it tacky and thick.
@DeniseMathew9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input, that's great to hear! I actually have( just bought recently) that dimensional mod podge, I bought it to make some jewelry pendants and haven't used it yet so now I'm really excited to try it out. Did you put it on before the gold leaf or after as I'm interested to know how easily the sealer and gold leaf stick to it. Thanks again for the amazing tip 😊 Denise

*also* if you want to give your work a nice clean straight edge to the golden cap remember you can use tape by wrapping the piece around first then plating up to it's edge. After you're done, take off the tape and it will have a nice fine line and extrusion around the rim of the gold plating

The gold has 100 purity and stick to itself when layered because of the molecules are attracted to each other called cohesion. And the purity can be increased if heated on a clean smoke free flame just before applying. So that's why to keep it pure even from skin oils etc it's preferable to apply with a clean brush or instrument. Then compacted with a metal instrument with a rough toothy surface to make it stick. Then when you have enough layers or thickness. It can be smoothed using a smooth surfaced instrument like a burnisher

thank you +Denise Mathew. also, what would be the best pliers for this? I noticed some don't make the wire work doable
@DeniseMathew8 жыл бұрын
+Hollidae Perigan you only need pliers if you're using a stone with a hole, if you are buying pliers just for this project multi tool pliers are ideal. I used a pair of those type pliers for years to make jewelry and they worked well, the only part that isn't great is the wire cutter part, so if you're doing more projects that would be worth buying. Here's a link to show you what I mean www.artbeads.com/tool-121.html you don't have to buy them there, I've seen them as Walmart and Michaels. Hope this helps. 😊

Hi Denise, thank you for this AWESOME tutorial. Question for you: do you have any recommendations for securing larger rocks to jump rings? I.e., how large is too large? I want to give my necklaces the longest possible life possible. Thanks again!
@DeniseMathew9 жыл бұрын
+Gowri Chandra to get the best life out of the necklace, the lighter the stone the better. All the stones I used were variable sizes but were fairly light, probably the weight of a large grape or a full walnut in the shell. Unfortunately the heavier you go the more chance you have that it may not last. If you plan on making them as gifts or for sale, I would make a few for yourself and wear it/them all the time to check durability, that was something I used to do with jewelry pieces I sold in my store, to ensure integrity.Hope this helps ;) Denise

i've seen crystal jewelry with no drill hole before and wondered how they did it. i think the person said they used crush pyrite on top. but they wouldn't share their method. i'm thinking maybe they used something like the e6000 and mixed it with some crushed pyrite, then topped the crystal with that? then stuck the jump ring in. have you seen that before?
@DeniseMathew9 жыл бұрын
Mallory Salay Hi Mallory, I do have some gold-dipped crystals that I bought a few years back, and for sure some of the ones that I have use glue because you can see it at the top with the jumpring. I'm sure it's been electroplated. They probably apply a layer of nickel or copper(maybe pyrite like you mentioned) to the places where they want the gold to stick then plate the whole thing. The gold plate won't stick to the crystal, only the metal parts. I used to work with a company that plated for me and sometimes I had silver jewelry with crystals in the design that I wanted gold-plated and it never ruined the crystal and only stuck to the metal or wire parts. There is a lot of heat applied through the process and it's not something that I would not want to attempt at home unless you want to start your own business. My process is what I could achieve at home on a minimal budget. ;) Thanks for your comment, Denise

Hi Denise, How well does the gold leaf hold up in water/sun? For example if i were to make this and go swimming with the necklace on, would the gold leaf tarnish/break off? Thank you!
@DeniseMathew3 жыл бұрын
It actually holds up quite well as long as you allow it to dry really well before putting it in water etc, I would give it 1-2 weeks based on how humid the environment is, this will give you maximum protection and extra sealer can also help. And it doesn’t tarnish at all.
@jenns379 жыл бұрын
How well does the jump ring hold up to wear? Is it durable? Great tutorial!!
@DeniseMathew9 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenn, Thanks for your question. I researched several glues and tried a few different types, hot glue, bead glue and a few others and decided to trust the suggested e6000 glue. As well as crafts, that glue is used for gluing car parts on, etc. But even so I'm always wary when it's just glue holding a jumping, so I glued the jumping on, let it dry for at least 24 hours then applied the gold leaf right over it, with several coats of sealer, finally I added a little bead glue to have extra security. I've been wearing my pendant around and so far it's holding up. But as I said if anyone knows of a better glue I'm all ears. The crystal pendant that I purchased had a jumping glued on so it is done in a profession scene too, but if you really want 100% security then a screw hook drilled into the crystal may be what you need. Having said that I believe that if your crystal isn't exceptionally heavy then the glue should work perfectly fine. If you plan on selling these or giving them as gifts I would suggest that you do what I used to do when I had my jewelry business, wear a piece every day and when you do, any issues with the design holding up will show up and then you can correct them. I hope this is helpful :) Denise

So with the amyethist, does the sealer also supplement a holding effect for the jump ring along with the glue?
@DeniseMathew6 жыл бұрын
It helps because it’s quite hard and is almost like a glue itself, and it also gives the gold sheet a nice polish. My crystals have stood up well and I like to add a few coats, just let it dry between coats to get the best results.

Question: So I tried liquid gold leaf, wore it and the gold started coming off. Tried again and used a metal leaf sealer... I hate the sealer. it left a dried super glue feel. I'm assuming that this sealer is for the sheets... what can I use to seal the paint without messing with the texture and shine? would the paint still seal of I applied before I painted?
@DeniseMathew7 жыл бұрын
+Fillory Thirty-nine you're right the sealer is for the sheets, it works great with that type of gold leaf so that's probably why it's not working so well for you. You could try a clear nail polish after you apply the paint, and maybe reapply it occasionally if you're wearing your pendant a lot. Hope this helps. 😊

is there a specific place you get you gems and stones?
@DeniseMathew8 жыл бұрын
+Poetically Sh8ed Hi, and thanks for your comment. I found my gemstones in a local new age store many years ago but I know etsy.com have sellers who sell raw gemstone crystals, also a subscriber suggested this eBay seller stores.ebay.com/Mininggems, just to be clear I haven't ordered from this seller and am only suggesting based on the subscribers info. Hope this helps, 😊 Denise

Did you drill the holes through the stone yourself?
@DeniseMathew8 жыл бұрын
+Anna DuBois no for the drilled stones in the tutorial, I bought them predrilled. 😊

Hi!! Where do you get your chains from? ❤️❤️
@DeniseMathew4 жыл бұрын
I like Michaels craft store for inexpensive chains and beadaholique.com too, they have a wide range of all prices of chains, both premade and loose. Hope this helps.

Is this imitation gold leaf or 24k? Loved the tutorial thank you!
@DeniseMathew6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s imitation gold leaf, but real gold leaf will work, it’s just a more expensive option.😊

Hi Cecilia, Thanks for your question. I bought the agate tooth bead in Thailand years ago, but there are many stores on Etsy.com and beadaholique carries a small selection of tooth beads. www.beadaholique.com/p-59290-amazonite-stone-claw-tooth-pendant-beads-45-50mm-2-beads.aspx I hope this helps.:) Denise
