This is a great technique to incorporate tumbled stones and raw crystals into your designs for a more rustic look. Once you get this technique there will be so many projects you will be able to do.
For the earrings I used about 1 foot of 26 gauge gold wire, 2, 8mmx 4mm turquoise nugget beads and 2 earwires. For the pendant in the tutorial I used a 30mmx 20mm amazonite tumbled stone, and 1 1/2 feet of 24 gauge copper wire. For the tooth design I used a 30mmx10mm flame agate gemstone and 1 foot of silver wire.
You can used 20- 26 gauge wire for wrapping the stones matching the gauge to the size of your stone. Practically any stone will work for this project as long as it's slightly narrower on one side.

This is the first video that actually clicked with me. I am not new to jewelery at all and the more complex Technics always seemed to be easy to catch on to but wire wrapping had always evaded me. I tried it for a while a long time ago but couldn't get it at all. Your video made something click inside my head that made it all make sense. Thank you so much, I will be spending my upcoming weeks just looking for stones on the ground to make into pendants for the practice. This truly was the best thing I have stumbled upon and it's sparked a creative part of my brain that had been dormant for a long time. Again, thank you! You really will never know how much this simple video has helped me! ♥️

I watched almost 10 videos that I THOUGHT made sense but then I realized the stones I picked out were very small and tumbled so I ended up having such a ridiculous amount of wire wrapping on my stone that it basically hid the stone & looked like sh*t This video ACTUALLY made sense to me, so I'm going to start over on my messy one & I feel way more confident on how it'll come out on try 2

I have some very small stones yours are a little bigger, and so I know now to get bigger stones and get one with a teardrop shape just to make it easier, I bought my stones at earthbound it’s a store here.

Very nice! Thank you very much for the vid. Just beginning to tumble stones as a hobby and have a question. What metal wires have you used and which do you prefer? Steel, copper, silver or gold? Any input would be appreciated.
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 9 жыл бұрын
+baynerw tumbling stones is great, I tried it a while back and got some great results, good luck. As far as wire goes, I honestly haven't worked with the steel so can't comment on that. I do work with copper on occasion but not much as some people can have reactions to it and it can turn green, also chain, if your making a pendant is difficult to find in copper. I like to work with sterling silver and gold fill for projects that I am giving away, or projects that I have sold in the past. For most of my videos I use a coated copper wire, like Artistic wire or an equal brand that Artbeads.com make. This wire is great for projects where you are learning and can give nice tarnish free results for a while. Ultimately when choosing wire you should keep in mind your budget, your experience, as well as how long you want your project to last because eventually with prolonged wear the less expensive wire will lose it's finish. I hope this is helpful and here's a link to a video I made about wire gauge and hardness in case your interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5vYhWukmsyXn80 :) Denise

the first two twists you make. how do you how the crystal in place while adjusting the wires? because it's hard to do this it never ends up being in the place I want it to be, or doesn't end up laying flat against the stone
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 8 жыл бұрын
+tara moriarty you can try measuring the stone at the place you want the wires to be, then without the stone take the 2 wire and twist the opposite sides leaving the center untwisted, leaving a space about the size of the stone so you can slip the stone into the space and that should already be quite fitted to the stone. You can also use a little masking tape to hold the stone to the wire temporarily, placing the tape on the outside over the wire and stone, hope this helps, let me know how it works out.

Very good video. What happens if you wrap stones with wire thicker than the recommended gauge? I have 18 gauge wire which is slightly thicker than 22 or 26 gauge.
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 5 жыл бұрын
An 18 gauge wire is perfectly fine to use, it will be sturdier and you can use heavier stones. The heavier the gauge usually means the wire is stiffer and can be more difficult to work with but if you don’t have any issues with the malleability then it’s perfect to use. The 26 gauge is a little too thin for anything other than light stones and for earrings, it usually won’t be as durable as a heavier gauge. 😊

For the pendant in the tutorial I used a 30mmx 20mm amazonite tumbled stone, and 1 1/2 feet of 24 gauge copper wire. For the tooth design I used a 30mmx10mm flame agate gemstone and 1 foot of silver wire.

Where do you recommend buying quality gemstones from? I want to find real gemstones and nothing made in a lab. Is there a go to website where jewelry makers source their crystals?
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 6 жыл бұрын
Etsy has a lot of great sellers of quality gemstones and gemstone beads. There are different suppliers based on whether they are drilled, or non drilled gemstones. I like lillysbeadbox.com for beads, I’ve ordered from www.etsy.com/ca/shop/GEMSCARTIN for gemstones that are not drilled and I liked the quality but the choice is yours. The best thing to do is to order a small amount of beads or stones from a seller with high feedback and see how you like it. Hope this helps, 😊

What do you do if you snap the wire right at the end? Literally bringing all the pieces together and the wire snapped :(
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 3 жыл бұрын
Try to wrap a new piece of wire around the pieces and use pliers to squeeze it tight, then make a loop. If you can weave the tail of the new wire a little around the original wire in inconspicuous places that can give it more stability to stay. If you try to work with really flexible or soft wire it can help eliminate the snapping wire issue. Good luck 😊

You can use any type of wire you want, the only thing to keep in mind is that it’s malleable enough to work with because if it’s too stiff it will snap when you’re twisting it. Hope this helps 😊

Can you show how you did the long tooth-shaped stone specifically? It's a rather stupid question, I know, but I'm planning on trying to wire wrap some coyote teeth to make necklaces.
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 6 жыл бұрын
It’s exactly the same procedure, start from the point of the tooth and work your way up. Make the center by twisting the side wires and leaving a small space in the middle for the tip of the tooth to fit in, then work upwards. Actually wrapping that shape is slightly easier. Best thing to do is just give it a try and see how it works out. Good luck 😊
