How to make a DIY raised garden bed - DIY Gardening Episode 01

In this video, I build a 4'x8' raised garden bed using corrugated steel roofing for the sides. I use redwood 2x4s for the frame & cedar 1x6s for the top plate.

Wow the view in your backyard is spectacular! This is the same style of raised beds I'm planning on building. I saw one KZbinr who used the Japanese method of burning wood called Shou Sugi Ban. It seals the wood without the use of chemicals and the blackened wood next to the metal looks really sharp. Thanks for the vid and the tip on the poor man's pocket jig!

Thanks resourcefulgirl, I've used Shou Sugi Ban befor. I looks and works great. That would be a cheaper alternative to using redwood or cedar for sure.

I really like my raised beds, had them for a long time. I use Cinder blocks turned on their sides so any excess water can drown out as we have a lot of rain here. You can also sit or walk on them as well.

I just built 3 of these a week ago, I like your legs better on the corners than mine, but it’s to late to change now. I filled mine to about 10 inches from the top with old rotten wood, sticks and layers of cardboard. I used the same pocket hole jig to lol. Great design thanks for sharing.

I'm using yours as a reference, as well. Except I'd already gotten what I thought I would need and went with 4x4s for the corners so I'll be adjusting. I've never made anything with wood apart from simple shelves and I've never had need to use giant sheets of corrugated metal (but now know how easy it is to slice up your skin by just grazing it...) so I've been watching and re-watching videos on it. It's been helpful for a lot of tips and yours just happened to use the same measurements. Thanks for posting

I have almost the very same design, just used a slightly heavier galvanized roof panel. I filled with the Hugelculture method in layers of logs, limbs, wood mulch, old hay, horse manure and compost. Can't wait to see how well it works. Built 4 4'x8' beds 24" deep. $400 invested. Great video 👍 PEACE BROTHERS AND SISTERS 🙏💙. STAY SAFE

The original build had no bottom frame and had the corrugations oriented vertically. I’m guessing that orientation helps the siding / roofing bear the weight of the soil unsupported. Useful video!

I always use a little outside rated glue on joints. It keeps them together better

Your added support will serve you well. I'd suggest 2x6 for the top rail in the future. You can always double up what you've put down to help keep it from splitting and warping. Be sure to glue and screw to laminate the boards together.

Hi Wendy, that build was copied from Sawyer Ridge Farm. It was a fun build and did fantastic last season. Right now I'm planning on being at the next meetup, but haven't gotten a hotel yet. I tried booking the Pryor on the first day but it was already sold out. Then I tried to get on a waiting list for the Pryor Motel, but have not heard back. Still trying.

Thanks Christine, I really appreciate it. You can start a raised garden in any structure. Don't let building a raised bed be a roadblock. You can start in something as common as a large cardboard box by removing tape and folding all flaps inward.

You could have split the 1x6’s into 2 1x3’s and you would not have needed the extra bracing. Great job though.

@@Jonatone To be perfectly honest, I think mine (and his) would be just fine without the bottom rail. I mainly added it for looks. And since it was touching the ground, that's why I used redwood. I met them at a get together in OK a couple years ago. They are the most genuine people you could ever meet. I can't say enough at how impressed I was with them. Great people.

Woudn't hurt, but it's unneccesary. The corners hold the soil in without issues. I've used these for 3 seasons now and they work great.

No, I used self-tapping screws which makes all the difference.

Do you have any concerns about lead content in the galvanized metal?

Not at all for a couple of reasons. One it is only on the sides, not the bottom. 2nd, Lead is part of the zinc coating and only leaches when zinc breaks down when it comes in contact with acids. Non acidic soil has no affect on it.

Judah, when I built this a couple years ago, it cost me about $80 to build. I just priced it out today and it would cost $190 to build. Hi Kimberly. You are going to build one of these the most efficiently using a derivative of 8, so 4x4, 2x6, 3x5. I actually ended up cutting this one in half getting 2 at 2'x8' by 18" deep. If you want it this deep (27") at 4'x5' you would need 4ea. 2"x4"x10', 2ea. 2"x4"x8, 2 sheets of corrugated panel and 4ea. 1"x6"x6' cedar fence boards. Now with the braces you added on the inside of the box (extra support) were those included in your list? So for one box I am thinking based off your plans and dimensions for a 4'x4'x24" box: 6-2"x4"x 8' boards (4 for the frame 48" wide and long & 2 for the corners based off this video style @ 17" tall to equate 24" total. 2 - 8' sheets metal panel 2-1"x6"x10' (if possible) for top slat with 45º miter cut. I am planning on a raised bed here in SE coastal Florida using aluminum corrugated hurricane panels that were donated. Might use treated lumber and put the frame on 1x1 concrete pavers. Due to a bad back I plan to make it higher maybe 30 inches. I dont have many tools so a quick change chuck for the drill looks like a next buy.

I'm not sure which one you are referring to, but I used 1/8" drill bit for drilling and a T2 torx bit for the wood screws, and a Kreg square bit for attaching the corrugated metal.

@@sidneywhite749 OK, now I see what you're asking. The drill is an impact drill so It has a quick-release hex chuck and all the drill bits that I used here are impact-ready hex bits. I love this setup because it's so easy to change bits.
