I am a beginner- beginner I am not yet familiar with basic terms, techniques... anything. ( I recently learned to thread my machine. ) I appreciate clear instruction that doesn't assume I know anything at all. I am interested in focusing on natural fabrics and material that will last - or attachable elements that could be hand washed and replaced like sheer sleeves. I am older and thicker. I need to loose some weight and want things that will not just hang like a tent, but snug in a bit for a more fitted look without alterations and look good tucked into a nice skirt. I may be interested in asymmetrical hem tops intended yo be worn over pants. Because I am experimenting with adjustable split side skirts, some if which have wide /long waist ties, I don't want a lot of extra bulk from ties on tops. I have been scrolling around for a while looking for ideas. I thought dolman tops might be an ez good go-to for some of my requirements (easy to sew) but they are intended for streatchy fabrics!! Ideas, please! If you don't have any tutorials that would suit, maybe you can give me ideas on search terms? (Help!) I want to make tops that match fabric with the skirt I am making. (Cotton) I don't have a serger; just a simple cheap sewing machine.

Hi! just starting to learn. Love your video! And also love the pattern. I know you replied already that you are using Butterick 5680 . . . I just wanted to confirm because the one I am seeing online is for "jackets". Is that the correct one or am I missing something? Thank you!

The exact pattern we used is actually a very old one from a magazine that is no longer available, so we tried to find a similar pattern in the ones shown in the video. There are dolman shirt patterns in the Butterick 5680 pattern. If you look at the cover, it would be the one pictured at the bottom left and bottom right that are similar to the one we made in this video. Hope this helps!

What sewing machine are you using? Which sewing machine can you, please, recommend as I am saving for one and dont want to be dissapointed...there are so many types available on the market, and I do not have much knowledge of them.

We used a Janome Memory Craft 1200 machine to sew this top, however this also has a built-in embroidery feature, so we wouldn't recommend it if you're just starting out as it's quite a pricey machine with more features than a beginner will need. However, Janome does make a wide range of machines with a lot of options that are good as a starter machine. If you plan on mainly sewing clothing, we would also recommend Brother or Juki as alternative options. Your best bet would be to see if there is a local sewing machine dealer in your area and see what they offer. This way they can recommend the best machine based on your budget and what you plan to sew!
