To all of you loftily commenting that "this has no value" I can only say this- you clearly aren't someone putting on scrubs and marching into germ warfare. I am a nurse, currently working in a hospital, NYC metro area, watching the tidal wave starting to fall on us. And no, it's not an N95, but if I can keep covering up the one surgical mask I may end up with to reuse, the God bless to whomever made it! What is acceptable now is changing by the hour. Thank you from the bottom of our tired and frightened hearts to those of you willing to use your talent, your hearts and your love to try and help!

There are peer reviewed papers documenting the efficacy of homemade cotton masks made from cotton jersey (t-shirt) and from dishcloths. Also clinical data from as far back as the 1930s showing that masks decreased actual infection rates. For influenza, the rate of infection is equal in users of N95 masks and surgical masks. (COVID could be different.) A cloth mask fits better than a bandana. Both protect the public when the wearer sneezes, their wet droplets are caught in the fabric. As far as protecting the wearer, if a fabric mask it only catches 50 or 75% of tiny particles, then it is better than no mask at all.

Okay, but is it worth spreading the disease? Because a company of 29,000 employees is adamantly staying open to the public under the guise that they're helping hospitals by providing kits of non-sterile masks. Excuse me? They have online stores. There is no necessity to staying open to the public and exposing lots more people so you can have a slightly more effective bandana or towel.

Doing this is extra seam and time, which doesn't sound like much, but adds up if you can make 3 masks instead of 2. (or 300 instead of 200) If you've made single fabric masks a permanent marker "IN" can be made on the INSIDE of the mask so the dirty outside doesn't get put against the face.

FOR THE NOSE FITTING PORTION OF THE MASK: After reading someone else’s idea about cutting strips from aluminum disposable pie pan (etc.) for the nose fitting portion, which is a good idea, I came up with what I think will be an easier idea, that will withstand washing (without rusting, as some have been concerned about for pipe cleaners and twisties, which also the paper can possibly come off when washed). This is something almost everyone has at home already: Heavy duty aluminum foil. 1. cut a 5” x 3” rectangle. 2. Fold in half lengthwise and crease. 3. Open back up and fold each side to the center crease. 4. Fold the ends in by 1/4” to 1/2”. 5. Fold back in half lengthwise. (By folding in all the sharp edges, hopefully it will make it more comfortable to wear.) I tried fitting it around my nose and it seems to keep its shape well. I haven’t tried inside a mask yet, as I’m still info gathering, as I want to include all the best ideas on my first go. I plan to insert it into the top of the mask and then sew around the ends and bottom of it, prior to closing up the bottom opening of the mask. So, I recommend experimenting. If you don’t have heavy duty foil, just cut your piece bigger, say 5” x 6” and fold in half to 5” x 3” before following the above instructions. Size can be adjusted as you see fit.

To anyone making masks themselves: I recommend pressing the mask with the pleats in, as it will lay flatter when you are packing them to be donated. Also, you do not have to have fuseable interfacing, layering your fabric can work as well. Two layers is good, four is better. If you don’t have elastic, cotton tape will work, or you can use any thin length of fabric (to be tied behind the head) so long as the edges are finished/will not fray. Those long, skinny strips of cabbage from previous projects do fine.

I would respectfully suggest instead of one piece folded in half, you make them from two pieces of contrasting fabric so you can tell which side faces out. If you can't tell, then you are likely to accidentally put the mask on with the contaminated side against your nose and mouth.

I've read that if she wears a diy mask over the surgical masks she can use one surgical mask longer. She will now be able to wear as many of the ones I've made for her and rewash them at night. A fine spray of 91% isopropyl alcohol, both sides until just wetted, drys in about 10 Minutes. We have been using this mask at work and for groceries. Sanitize your hands before donning and prior to removing, and after removing. Then hang and spray with isopropyl and let dry. Wash daily. Use 1 inch white paper tape to hold wire or a four inch rolled Kleenex at the top. Remove and replace daily. Iron back to shape, it looks new after 10 washings. Thanks for the pattern. Recommendation: before top stitching, put a small wire (bread tie, unbent paper clip, pipe cleaner, floral wire 3-4"long ) down close to the original seam (the 1/4" seam allowance without pressing it open leaves a channel) then "stitch in the ditch" close to the wire so that it is sealed between the original seam and the top stitch around it. Existing masks can be "retrofitted" with this method. The wire improves the mask to make it easier to breath through, fit more comfortably, and seal out more germs.

Doesn't break the needle & not as uncomfortable as various wires I've tried It's best to have something non woven between layers. NON FLUSHABLE baby wipes ( dried out) are perfect. HCP use of homemade masks: In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Batting makes the masks hot and is not an effective filter; it doesn't add any protection against the virus. Nonwoven interfacing is a good filter though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ-2fWaAbK9jlac&feature=emb_logo

I figured out a simple way to add a bendable metal nose piece. I have some 16 gauge jewelry wire, which I cut into a 4" length. Then, I used a round tip jewelry pliers to bend the ends into a loop, so that the sharp ends of the wire don't rip the fabric or poke someone. Once I had the mask turned right side out and ironed, I inserted the wire through the opening left for turning. I placed the wire inside the mask centered along the fold, opposite the side with the opening. I then marked the folded edge at the ends of the wire, with a white marking pencil, at roughly 2 1/4" and 5 3/4". Next, starting at the folded end, I stitched about a 1/4" down at the 2 1/4" mark, turned the fabric 90 degrees, stitched along the length of the wire to encase it and then at the 5 3/4" mark, once again turned the fabric back 90 degrees and stitched back to the folded edge. Then I turned the fabric 90 degrees again and continued stitching to the corner where the elastic ear loop starts. This created a little pocket for the nose piece wire that will keep it in place. My next step will be to make the pleats. I will then do the final stitching which I will start at the corner where I had stopped before, stitching down the first pleated side, along the bottom with the opening left for turning, back up the second pleated side and then finally turning the last corner and edge stitching until I get back to the place where I had started the nose wire casing. I did it in 2 separate steps because I didn't want to have the nose wire move during this final stitching phase. I have a Husqvarna Viking and used presser foot J which is open on the right side and has a little metal guide which helped me stay clear of the nose wire, although I did break one needle because of hitting the wire. I was making 10 masks, so 1 broken needle was a pretty good success rate!

No, not a huge thank you to JoAnn's. First of all, everyone who makes a mask and donates it *has to be virus free or else they are exposing health care workers.* Secondly, *every employee who takes your mask and sells you fabric has to be virus free.* In other words, odds are you are more likely GIVING THE HEALTH CARE WORKERS THE VIRUS than you are preventing them from getting it!! Secondly, JoAnn's is a corporation and is using these "kits" as an excuse to keep 29,000 employees open to the public despite not being an "essential" business! They are coded by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) as a HOBBY STORE primarily and like all other hobby stores, NEED to be shut down to enable isolation!! The way I understand it, most of these will be used as a cover for the actual N95 masks, so that the actual N95 can be used longer, instead of being changed after every use. Instead, these cotton masks will be changed out, then washed and used again, as a cover layer. Used alone, they would be very inefficient. As an added layer, just to protect the N95 mask, they will be very useful. That being the case, there would be no need for the wire in it or so many layers. It is simply acting as a shield to the effective mask.

I tried breathing through a piece of interfacing and it doesn't work so well. The iron on kind has chemicals in it that might not be good to breathe. I am a retired nurse who has worn many masks for years, so I know what that is like. The idea of using twist ties or something else for a nose piece is a great idea as that keeps the mask from coming up by your eyes. A twist tie wire is thin, so can be zig zagged over to keep it in place. Good comment about the 7" elastic being a bit too long. If no elastic is available , ties can be made for the corners out of bias tape or steps of fabric.

They are also as easy to breathe through as surgical masks, which makes them more comfortable enough to wear for several hours. Doubling the layers of material for your DIY mask gives a very small increase in filtration effectiveness, but makes the mask much more difficult to breathe through.

make sure to use less elastic if these are too big on you! i’ve been making them for me and my friends (all around 12-14) and for most of us we need to use more like 6.5 inches of elastic so that it covers our faces well.

PLEASE: People need to realize, if making masks for others, try to use common sense because none of us know if we have been exposed or not. If we are handling the filters, and if we have been exposed, we could inadvertently contaminate the filter portion, which usually cannot be washed. Which would/could expose the wearer. Please, everybody, take extra precautions. ALSO: Please make sure any filter materials used are non toxic and free of fiberglass and toxic elements.

I must have small or weak ears. The ear loops bent my ears forward and the mask slipped right off. What I ended up doing was cutting 11" pieces of elastic and criss-crossing them (upper left to lower right, upper right to lower left) and that worked great for me.

I'm a buyer 1 for my hospital. Yesterday morning I bought out all that Joanne's and hobby lobby. We have a team of older women sewing this weekend. There is no vendors that have stock. So we must make them now. Help your local community by making these. You will make a difference.

Buying out all that Joann's and Hobby Lobby had just to be used for ONE group leaves helping the rest of the community almost an impossibility if everyone follows your suggestion. Please people, buy only what you need so that others can help others. One or two people can only sew so many at a time; but if 100 people were sewing, so much more can be accomplished.

Also if you double the height you can fold over and double the fabric and insert interfacing in between the 2 layers. That's what I've been doing and I think it adds another layer of filtration

My understanding is that you should NOT use pins in this project, just clips. Pinning your fabric will make holes that may allow the virus to penetrate through the mask.
@karenziomek8699

I would think that washing and drying would remove any pin holes. Fabric is not stopping the virus. These masks are more to protect us from spreading virus than to protect us from it.

I got wire from the dollar store that florists use, it’s inexpensive and it works very well, just turn the ends into a loop so that it doesn’t poke through the fabric, And the Cloth covered elastic that you use to pull your hair up in a pony tail work well to put around your ear.

I found that 7" elastic was too long for myself & my husband so the mask did not fit securely. So I shortened to 5.75". I see another comment further down had the same issue, but cut her elastic to 6.5". Therefore, you might want to clip elastic into place & then see what length works for you before you sew it up. Shorter length elastic makes it curl up, but it flattens out as your machine foot reaches the other end. Just make sure your elastic strip doesn't get out to the edge where you are sewing. I found other sites talking about using additional filtering material. If you want this, don't sew closed the opening space where you turn it right-side-out. Also, if you want the mask to conform over your nose, you can add a 6" piece of pipe cleaner (or some other flexible wire) inserted in the open fold and then stitch that edge closed. (See Leah Day's tutorial). Also I read that washing a cotton mask decreases it's filtering capabilities. So DON'T wash before making. I did, thinking I needed the fabric to shrink now, in case I wanted to wash it again after wearing. They found that letting them sit, unworn, for 48-72 hours actually worked the best to let the virus die.

Yes, I was just scrolling through comments to see if I was the only one. I just finished one and had another up to the part where I need to add elastic and I'm glad I thought to stop and test out the first one before I added it because 7" fit my face very loosely as well, like gaping and falls off my nose. I think I'm going to go with 6" based on my estimate of what will fit me how I'd like.

I bought the flat hair ties that come with the knot in the end and untying them. They're a little bit softer and a tad more comfortable behind the ears. I also have made a child's size using this same pattern but cutting to 7 1/2" x 5"

where did you put the marks for the pleats in the childs one? I had gotten some from joanns for my grandson- but i think he is outgrowing them. Fully stretched out, it goes just at his nose and under his chin, I think they need to be a bit bigger for him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I suspect a lot of hospitals and medical facilities will either not accept these or will not be able to use (except perhaps, as some commenters mentioned, as a cover for N95 masks). If your facilities will take them, awesome! If not, there are many other locations and people for whom these may be helpful. I am going to make some this weekend and donate them to my city's local shelters, missions, soup kitchens and for people who are homeless (though for legal purposes, I would suggest telling people they will not be fully protective but are just to try to limit spread to other people, especially by those who are infected). These are people who are very high risk of death if they get sick and a disease like this can spread through the homeless population like wildfire. These masks won't solve the situation, but if it can help a bit, it can save some lives. Think of it as a harm reduction measure. For those who are worried about the cotton not being thick enough to stop the spread of the virus, you're right, however, the virus lives in our spit and airborne particles. The cotton (especially if you use a couple of layers) will help keep some of those particles from spreading to other surfaces, where the virus can live. Additionally, one of the biggest problems with spread is with people touching their faces after coming into contact with a contaminated surface. These masks will help people from touching their mouths and noses until after they have washed their hands. It is important to remember that these masks will not be the game-changer in the fight against this pandemic, but if we all try to do our part and help each other as much as possible, we can make a difference! Good luck everyone and stay safe! And wash you hands! :)

You need to insert either pipe cleaner or a twist tie into the seam at the top of the mask that will enable the section near the nose to be pinched in.

Just a thought you should make these out of two different fabrics. Then you can have an inside and an outside. If you have to take this one off for a minute to eat or something you could potentially put it back on with the dirty side in
