It would be really helpfully to see what you mean by unused loop on the starting chain. In the video you keep pulling the sample out of view of the camera when you are putting in the hook on that side

Usually when you work on a starting chain at the beginning of a project, you only work on one loop. The unusued loop is the one left over and not worked on. So it's basically whatever you can grab from the starting chain on the opposite side from where you work before.
