Glad to see the hoof here. I watched an old Athabascan lady fleshing a caribou on a log one time. What she used was the lower leg, but had kept enough rawhide from the upper leg to form a loop to put her forearm thru, then grasp the leg. Way more ergonomic. Nice vid you have here.

Would a piece of simple steel bar stock work? Does it really need one blunted sharp edge?
@timothylongmore7325
@timothylongmore7325 3 жыл бұрын
Bar stock would work fine. I have a large drawknife I use. Lawnmower blade , machete , etc. I used a piece of broken slate from a pool table once. worked well. Any sharp square edge. You're just pushing the flesh off the skin.

sharpen your bar stock though with a grinder then knock off the wire edge

If you're dulling the edge… wouldn't a stiff paint scraper work?
@jennykoczur9339
@jennykoczur9339 4 ай бұрын
It would have to be verrry stiff. Scraping hides takes quite a bit of force.

Just a suggestion self-adhesive fabric bandage over the duct tape and it comes in different colors

what to do with smell of hide when soaking in waterand will the smell stay in after you turn it into leather?
@timothylongmore7325
@timothylongmore7325 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't stay in the finished leather but will smell smoky if your brain tanning. At that point though you can wash it and it will smell like leather. During processing though it's a smelly job. i made an apron out of a heavy duty trash bag , rubber boots and rubber gloves. Cool weather the smell isn't as bad but de-hair with wood ash works better if it's warmer. Do the fleshing asap , de-hair then rinse really well.

i make scrapers and draw knives from pickup leaf springs or lawn mower blades. when tempered they are flexable where needed, but last a very long time and easy to put the correct edge on. just something to think on. i forge them by the way not grind them.

I do the same . My favorite scraper I mounted elk horn handles on. I use leaf spring an brush hog blades. Like making stuff better than buying it.

@@oldmountaindawg4593 I made my carry knife from a railway spike. I brought it up to criticle temp then quenched in fresh veggie oil. It is super hard but extremely flexible, and holds an edge that will shave a cat (not easy to cut cat hair, try it some time their hair is super fine and rolls off the blade. No I don't test on them, but had to shave my pet bobcat when he sliced his back open to be able to stitch him up. He passed away years later).

@@davidrose415 morning Dave. Can do that , I'm allergic to cats. Lol besides my dogs treat them as terminal chew toys. Lol. Spikes make great tomahawks also.

@@oldmountaindawg4593 yes they do. I have a new design I'm planning to make. I'm out of propane, and coal. So I have to get one of those first, but came up with the idea to make a tomahawk with a ram's head having horns behind the socket. If it works with the spike I might try it with pattern welded steel.

I believe they used the deer leg, as a vertical knife, maybe so it wouldn't bind up a wrinkle of hyde and cut through unevenly. I guess if someone was fleshing on a board, that verticle tool without the skin taught, would be useless.

7:50 Seems like the right material for grips on this tool is some soft, tanned buckskin.
