I do have an angle grinder, but lack the correct setup for drilling. Your solution for a lanyard attachment is great -- as is your repurposing old files!

Thank you for your great videos. I decided to make a file steel because of your videos. It works great! What I did with mine was to dedicate one side of the steel to striking with flint and I ground the other side edge to a sharp 90 degree edge. With the sharp edge combined with the ridges of the file, it scrapes shavings exceptionally well and also strikes a ferry rod very well. Thought that I would share. Thanks again for the videos.

Please Check Out My 100s Of Firemaking Videos... We've already made a Flint and Steel, Steel from the tang end of a Nicholson File (LINK below). Now, what can we do with the other 2/3?.. the body of the file?... more steels?... How would you even attach a lanyard to such a steel since it can not be easily drilled? I'M GLAD YOU ASKED!!! We start off today with a good explanation of the importance of getting the right Cut Off Wheel for your particular Dewalt Angle Grinder... Unlike the last couple of videos, this time, I show all of the cutting and a lot of the grinding. I cut off about 5" of the body and make one end into a ferro rod scraper while notching the other end to accept a Cobra Weave Lanyard. (Cobra Weave Tutorial, LINK below). Finally, the best part of all, we get to try it out! Come see how beautifully it all turned out; and. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks! Hello David. As always, I love your videos. I was thinking about how to DOUBLE the about of sparks thrown from scraping your ferro rod. When you scrape a rod with a single edge piece of steel, you only have one point of contact with the rod. But, if you cut a groove straight into the side of the steel like you have done in this video you will double this contact. You would not to make the groove as deep as you did on this video and with no angle needed. Then when scrapped along the rod you would have two points of steel in contact with the rod and this should double the amount of sparks thrown. Maybe you could make five or six of these small grooves along one side of your steel keeping the opposite side smooth for flint. Its just a thought. If this works would you show us on the next video? THANKS!

I've thought about a groove down the length of the thickness of the file before. I talked about it with a subscriber a few months ago. I do think it would throw more sparks, but not enough to justify all the work. We'll have to leave that experiment to a machinist.

Hi David, it gladden ' my heart to see you making this version of a steel striker, you probably lost some hardness on the end due to heat,but will cure that when you regrind it, this mod to a striker makes a great tinder scraper. Really like the way to fix a lanyard,going to try that myself on some bit's of file I have left.many thanks, keep well, Stuart.

Look at all those sparks from the angle grinder! Got me thinking: I live in New England where we have lots of granite, but no chert rock. Can I just use an old grinding wheel to strike a file? Just discovered this channel today, but I wonder if you tried this in one of your many videos?
@Greasyfingers60 Жыл бұрын
I just went out to the garage and found an old wheel and file, and it does work! Not great, but if you are very fast with the strike you get a couple sparks. My first ever attempt to try a flint and steel technique, so I was not accurate or reliable. I bet you would do better giving a demo.

I have used files from Nicholson made in Mexico & Brazil. However, using those fire steels against good chert doe NOT produce many sparks!! Surprising. Is it the quality of the material for file production in those countries the problem?

When the edge of your flint, quartz, churt gets dull, if the piece is big enough, you can nap a new sharp edge on it.
