In this video we show you how to make a floating picture frame. This style frame is called a “Floating frame” as the artwork has a spacing around its parameter and feels like the artwork is floating. We used red oak to build the picture frame.
Hopefully you all find the video helpful and interesting.

As someone who has had a table saw accident, watching you rip those boards turned my stomach. A push stick is way cheaper and less painful than a trip to the emergency room. Plus you get to keep your fingers!

It was a sawstop saw. I would still probably use a push stick, though

I particularly appreciated that you described many tips for accuracy in the construction process, such as double checking the angle measurement of the mitre saw with a carpenter's square and cutting one frame piece first and using it to set the measurements on the opposite side piece.

Awesome! What measurements did you add to the over-all length and width of the painting for the gap around it?
@LonghornWorkshop
@LonghornWorkshop 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching appreciate that. For the measurements I had a 1/4” reveal on each side of the painting. So you should add an extra 1/2” to the width and length of the painting. That will give you the inside dimensions of the frame. Not sure if that made sense, watch this other video of framing I did that talks about this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaW7ZZV7rreUaqMsi=b2U03yk6SFiGcCsn As alway cut just a little wider than you need before you make the finals cut.

To maintain same length I'd do it differently: 1. cut slightly wider boards to length, two at a time for each opposite side, in one go at 45°; 2. for the groove, I'd either use a router or dado-blade.

Not sure understand but the frame can be any size you just need to make sure the corners are glued and secured like I did or with nails / screws. The bigger or heavier the frame means more stress on the corners. You can also glue small triangles on the back of the corners to make the joints stronger

Can we use pine wood instead?
@LonghornWorkshop
@LonghornWorkshop 3 ай бұрын
Yes any type of wood can be used. What is important to remember is how you will finish the frame, meaning stain or just clear coat. Pine can be stained you just have to put a coat of prestain. Course you can also paint the frame… Anyway yes any wood is good for a frame.

Great video, but the number of power tools is beyond a basic DIYer.

You are correct, I am looking to see if I can do a frame by just using some very basic hand tools. Thanks for watching and the comment, will try and get a video on that soon

Use a push stick it is much safer. One slip and it’s to late.

Yeah thanks it’s a sawstop table saw, so it will not chop off my fingers. But yes should still use a push stick

Came home from school one day to blood on the kitchen floor, followed it to the door to the basement, down the stairs to the fireplace where Dad was creating built-in, modern living, dining room furniture + total kitchen, all from scratch, by my Dad. Dad had almost cut the tip of his middle finger off, doing exactly what you did when ripping on your table saw. He passed out from loss of blood in the car w Mom driving (poor lady had just lost her 2nd child in a freak bus accident the year before). I grew up looking at my Dad's middle finger, reattached at first joint, veering of at about a 25° angle. Use a push stick.

I found getting the internal dimensions of the frame right was the difficult part. The first time the frame was larger than the picture , the second time it was too snug.

Yep it’s a little tricky, you can watching this video where I kinda show how I measure it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaW7ZZV7rreUaqMsi=URoJ4WkbIQubzJFM Even with that I always cut the first miter and holes the art work to the frame and then mark out where I want the second miter cut.

Hello, what is the model of the Porter cable saw?
@LonghornWorkshop
@LonghornWorkshop 3 ай бұрын
It’s a Porter-Cable Deluxe Biscuit Joiner, Model 557. Although you don’t really need a expensive model, you can buy used or cheaper ones from Amazon. If you have a table saw you should use that to make the splines.

Do the screws just screw into the back of the canvas?
@LonghornWorkshop
@LonghornWorkshop Жыл бұрын
The canvas is mounted in a wooden frame, so yes you are correct the screws just screw into the frame of the painting.
