if you cant afford an airbrush (and compressor, paints, thinners etc) then to get those smudge effects you could use some dry pigments and just apply them with a cloth, but it should be a matte surface else it wont stick too well. I usually dont clear coat until im 100% done with painting. if you do have an airbrush and your a bit more skilled with it you could do some pre shading in black around the edges and corners, then go over it all in white, gives it a very nice lightly weathered look overall. Looks awesome man, nice video!

Thanks! All great suggestions, if you watch my latest video where I remake the phase 2 clone helmet, you'll see that I use oil paint for shading along with a black wash.

What does the finished surface feel like? I assume it's rigid but would you say it's durable?

Because of all the layers of primer and paint, it's less flexible than just EVA foam, but still a little flexible. The finish is pretty resistant to scraches but if you drop the helmet, it will dent.

Your work is Incredible! And it inspired me to try and make my own EVA helmet, but I have one question; About how much budget do you spend on making a helmet? Like all the costs within the spray paint and the filler

Thank you! :) Because I already have the tools and materials, it can go from 20$ to 60$. If you have to buy all the materials it costs more around 100$. But if you have to buy the tools it's gonna be more.

I use acrillic paints and foam from Michael's and Joann's. It cost me about 30 dollars for the foam, paint, and the visor.

Thanks! I don't know much about brushes, but for most situations I use regular straight tip brushes of different sizes. I also have chip brushes for weathering and dry brushing. Detailing brushes are also useful for small details and weathering with oil paints.

@@TristanMaker Ohh okay thanks! and I plan making the 501st clone trooper which means i’ll be adding the big blue middle stripe along the middle, what step should I add that in and should i spray paint it with masking tape along the sides or should i use a brush?

I would recommend you use low tack hobby grade masking tape so it doesn't peel off the paint underneath. You could totally brush it on before applying the clearcoat.

There are templates available on my Etsy store, but they are not free. Selling my templates is the only founding I get to pay the tools and materials to make my videos. I make sure to sell them at a very cheap price too.
