And in French we call that kind of knife an Opinel from the famous Opinel fabric. Nice job you've done there.

When you get to drilling the hole, as at 5:08, instead of the dremel approach, use a mapp gas torch to take some of the hardness out. In this way, you will be able to drill the hole and the tang will be less brittle at the pivot point which might keep the blade from snapping off when you use it. You should try heating and drrilling xseveral pieces of scrap at different rates to find the best heat for the material you are using. It does seem odd tome that a saw blade would be that hard/tough to drill.

I learned a cool trick for drilling hardened steel u sharpen the end of a masonry drill bit and watch it go! no shit it works every time just drill slowly and keep oil on your hole. Nice end result! The only thing I would have done is normalize (let it heat up then cool down slowly) the steel which already was heat treated because the steel is unevenly hardened because on the grinding. In hindsight, your blade is super hard and brittle in spots and soft and in heat treated in places too. The. After you could just re heat treat it then temper in in your oven. From knife maker to knife maker, you did a solid job

Well the easiest way to drill a hole to that steel is to normalize it... And do some heat treatment and tempering to your steel project...
@Thorin7.62
@Thorin7.62 4 жыл бұрын
Not that easy in HSS, it is engineered to retain high hardness even after being red hot; however, an easier way is to use Bosch Multiconstruction carbide tipped bits, I have drilled fully hardened tool steel with them for handle scale pins onfixed blade knives. Have also seen carbide masonry bits sharpened and do the same

Although the basic wood Opinel uses is beech, they have other options like olive, oak, walnut and bubinga, not to mention the modern artificial materials. Further Opinel's handle is not a simple cylinder, therefore is better for indexing. Anyhow, this is really a nice diy project.

Nice looking knife and good video but if you didn't show the blade being heat treated or tempered which is the main thing that makes a blade a blade as opposed to a blade shaped piece of steel. Also when shaping the blade and grinding in the bevels you didn't show any cooling of the blade such as being dipped in water... if those steps are not done the blade can certainly be sharpened but the edge retention will be poor meaning you need to resharpen often. I know the steel is from a saw blade but the heat put into the blade during shaping and grinding will have ruined some of the original heat treatment process. Also to drill the hole for the blade the steel needs to be annealed which is essentially removing the hardness from the blade by heating and then slowing cooling which will allow the blade to be shaped and ground easier as it will be softer and also for drilling holes and then heat treated again to reintroduce hardness which is essential for longevity and edge retention and so the blade won't easily break under load / pressure. Sorry don't mean to knock your excellent video just wouldn't want people going to all the effort and miss what are probably the most important steps in making a knife.
