I'm the proud wearer of this beautiful hat. It was a gift from my Dad. The fit is perfect. I have worn it ice fishing and bow hunting. It is ideal for bow hunting as it sits above my ears so it does not impede my hearing in the woods and allows me to feel my anchor point on my ear when I draw the bow. @@StockmanOriginal Hello Brian ☺️ roo fur is softer than you would think but the hair is quite short, in saying that the leather it self is the strongest you will find for its thickness, great for making straps, whips and thonging 👌 i might have to hit you up for some raccoon fur one day☺️ I'd love to make a Davey Crockett style cap 👌you would be surprised how cold it gets here in the winter months 🥶 up in the mountains in Victoria we have huge snow fields and ski resorts and even in the low lands water in the bird bath will freeze over night

I'm just now watching this video and it's fascinating I have two otter pelts that I would love to have made into hats I really like the mountain trapper type any suggestions I'm a woodworker but love acquiring new skills just not sure I would have the time to tackle this one?

As a leather worker i can tell you it is very hard to make people understand just what goes into making anything leather or in fur. even if you have a.pattern i always make a hard copy of a pattern and can spend 2 hr's just doing a pattern punching holes. drawing out then transfer it to leather. i just did 2 biker hats and won't do that again anytime soon. no one want's to pay what is fair. i still love the hobby and will keep doing what i do. i still have the hats on dummy heads and that's where they will stay. lol ...loved your fur hat and the coat you made the black stripe on red made that coat...

Lee, you are so right, people are so used to Walmart and fast fashion they can’t even wrap their heads around hand crafted things. I to make patterns for a lot of what l do but somethings are more like a formula. With hats l make forms to build off of. The blanket l used for that coat was a beautiful Whitney four point blanket, they sport that black stripe. Hudson’s Bay blankets have three or four stripes of different colors.

This looks great. I'm wondering why you lined it with a synthetic fabric that doesn't breathe well, though? Wouldn't it be better to line it with a natural fabric that breathes, like silk? Just curious. It looks great, though. 👍

That a good observation. I try to protect the hide as best l can from sweat which is the number one killer of these hats. I’ve been through many over the years. It’s also why l use nylon thread.

@@StockmanOriginal I understand using a fabric to protect the hide, but wouldn't a synthetic fabric make your head sweat even more? I'm just wondering, I've never actually made hats, yet. I'd still use synthetic thread, because it's often strong, and you can melt the ends so that there's less chance of the stitching coming out.

Gorgeous hat! I’m recently acquired a few rabbit furs and want to attempt a hat like this but with ear flaps, like my dad brought from the Soviet Union. Is the process pretty much the same?

Hi Patty, thanks for checking us out, we appreciate your support. Yes, the process is similar but the ear flaps are a bit tricky to add in. Just add them to the body of the hat before you sew in the lining.

I've been scouring the internet for my first fur trapper hat and, probably from my ignorance, I don't understand why the entire hat can't be made of fur (i.e. no satin liner on the inside, only fur inside and out). Could you help me understand?

Hello Ryan, thanks for checking us out. There’s no reason why a hat can’t have fur on the inside as well as the outside. I’ve seen sheepskin hats with the fur side in and some beautiful Mongolian hats also. They would be very warm that way. There’s a few reasons why I don’t build them that way: To have fur inside and out would require twice as much fur and make the hat bulkier, also it would be very slippery and hard to control on your head. When ever possible I like to include a leather sweatband which kinda sticks to your forehead and prevents it from slipping down over your eyes or spinning about or even blowing off. I use the satin liner mostly because it looks nice. But aside from all that, there’s no law governing the making of hats and a person should follow their own path. I say, go for it and if possible I would love to see what you create, happy sewing.

Can the front and back section just be one full length without having to stitch it together except in the back of the hat?

Hello Wesley,and welcome to our tribe. You can do it that way as many native folks did and still do make otter hats that way but those are usually open on top like a headband. I do mine this way so the grain of the fur goes up in the front, back on the top and down in the back. Love to see how you make out, don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Hello Vince, thanks for checking us out. The trouble with older fur is that it dries out and becomes fragile. I would hate to spend a bunch of time on a project ( and charge you for it) just to have it fall apart too soon. Fresh fur would be better.
