Pipes. I've made many pipes. The black bear pipe bowl is one I just finished, carved from black pipestone. I have several others with red pipestone (from Pipestone, MN).

Wonderful details macro to micro. The scale of some of the components is impressive in and of itself, the full length of some of these pipes is much larger that one would first think!

I have heard that soaking the harder Pipestone in water makes it easier to carve but doesn't effect the durability of the stone once it is dried Sir. Should would like to see the tools you use to make such beautiful pipes also.
@StockmanOriginal
@StockmanOriginal 6 күн бұрын
I will have to try that, I know that with meerschaum it is recommended to soak it as well.

I've never had the opportunity to work any pipestone. I have worked a little soapstone before. I really like slate. What we have here is mostly what is referred to as banded slate. It can vary in color from green to grey to black in some combination, giving it the banded effect. Not sure if you have ever ran across any or worked it before. Some of it is junk and is not stable at all. Splitting at the different layers. Always like to see what you're up to. Thanks for sharing!!

Hey Ashley, thanks for checking in. Stone is such a cool material to carve and slate is very nice, l’ve made a lot of things out of it. Around here I have only seen solid colors but in the midwestern states there seems to be some banded varieties that the native folk used for many things, very pretty stuff.

The only thing like this that people might see are examples in a museum & the makers are long since dead!!! We get to see & hear from the guy/maker who is still alive & productive in the field!!! Fantastic work! Interesting ideas, executed perfectly! And the only carved pipes we (me'n'my lady) have are Turkish meerschaum ones and they're... skull-shaped. What, we *both* like skulls - they look so cheerful! :D

They are all such beautiful pieces 👌 Id love to know how you did that spiral stem, did you make it flat and bore the hole then twist it with steam 🤔
@StockmanOriginal
@StockmanOriginal 5 күн бұрын
Hi Dave, I usually do those out of a round pole , burn the pith out and then carve the spiral. This one was my first and I did it differently but generally I use the round pole and you get a wonderful grain pattern. Cheers buddy!
