Only 8-10 layers then painted it with acrylic paint ( spongebob theme) and they ended up having to get a hammer to bust it open so the kids could get to the candy...so I'll probably use pva glue if I ever make a pinata again😂

That's awesome! Once the egg is dried, Is it stiff enought to carve the edges or make a hole on one side of it (so I can place a light weight object inside)? Also, would it keep it's shape if I were to cut about a third off the top of it to make it into a broken egg shell half?
@LizChadertonStudio
@LizChadertonStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this one would be okay to make a broken egg or do a cut out. It will depend on the number of layers you've done and the strength of glue. PVA will be stronger than wallpaper paste for example. This all sounds intriguing! What have you got planned?
@bridgetmckenna3729
@bridgetmckenna3729 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your quick reply Liz. I'm participating in my first Trunk-or-Treat". I'm setting up an alien invasion by creating a space ship on the open trunk with large alien who landed in the trunk. The alien will hold two large eggs each of which will have baby aliens sitting on top of their broken edges. The treats (twisty space straws holding rocket ship lollipops) will be inside the eggs. Oh yes….I am a Type 'A" over achiever LOL. Last question, do you need to let each layer dry before applying the next layer?
@LizChadertonStudio
@LizChadertonStudio 2 жыл бұрын
@@bridgetmckenna3729 good grief. You’d better get going quick and don’t blame me when you get to layer six and ask Why, oh Why? That sounds amazing. Each layer doesn’t have to be dry, so I put 2 on at a time. It makes sense to dry as much as possible as you go not to trap moisture. It must be firm before popping the balloon and then with that gone more air can circulate to allow for final drying. Good luck!

Awesome work Liz! In your expert crafting opinion ;), if I were to use a balloon much larger than the one you used, will air suffice? I’ve seen some people use starch to fill up their balloon for the mold but wasn’t sure what the difference was between filling it w/ air vs starch
@LizChadertonStudio
@LizChadertonStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Yari, I’m so sorry, but I don’t know. I don’t think you could get a balloon bigger than this… not in the UK anyways. If it were larger you would need more layers of paper. I did ten and it still has some ‘give’ in places. Sounds like an amzing project to start now for next year!

@LizChadertonStudio
@LizChadertonStudio Жыл бұрын
yes, that’s what I’d do. make a single egg, then cut it and maybe reinforce the cut edges with a bit more papier mache. You might have to do extra layers as the complete egg is intrinsically stronger than two halves.

Wow. Your patience paid off. I told my son we were going to make huge paper mache' eggs. About 50 large ones. Then I found your video. Ain't no way...I'm dropping the number dow to 3. Does it have to be 10 layers, is there a specific glue or recommended brand and same amount water as the glue?
@LizChadertonStudio
@LizChadertonStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Wooooh, 50????? You are ambitious! 3 is ambitious!! And my top tip is make sure you can get it through the doors of your house. This can't go through our internal doors. Luckily we have a double door to the outside! So for this size 10 layers is about right. It still has a little squash to it even with 10. A bit smaller and you could get away with fewer. It uses lots of glue, so I just went to the DIY shop and get a gallon of the cheapest PVA they had. PVA is a lot stronger than wallpaper glue, and I think that's important for this size. It really doesn't matter the brand. Watch out, some have fungicides in them. I don't know how old your son is, but you might want to be careful. Yes equal parts water and glue, I found worked well. And you needs lots of paper!!! Good luck!

Well I believe I lost that little ambition that I talked about. I'm now just thinking about my son and I making three to four 8 in plaster eggs so by the time Easter comes back around, we'll have about 100 that we can sell outside of my lemonade stand. Not to mention the one large Giant egg that I was working on I started off with paper mache and set it out in the sun and it dried so quickly that I think it busted and I was able to salvage it a little bit but then I left it outside and a wind storm came up and blew it in the road and then a few cars did the rest..lol...
