I'm hoping to be inspired as well. My mom made the regular stuff back in the 60's. I just remembered that she did that with us girls (me and two other little piggies)! And I made it with MY girls when they were young...now one of them is constantly crafting with HER kids. I'll give her this recipe... it's much more sturdy than plain paper mache and I'm sure they will have great fun making something for their newly assigned bedrooms. A Unicorn probably lol. The oldest actually shows natural artistic talent. And she has a defined style. 9.5 yrs old. I'm sorry! I could go on and on and you weren't even talking about other people. Maybe you could put a link up on this video comment section and show me what you made, us, show US, and we will do the same! I'm an older gal and I better get going of its gonna get done at all !! That is called collaboration instead of competition... sadly something younger people today think they cannot do. In real life artists are supposed to exchange and collaborate, that's how advancements and great ideas happen. Some even can share projects...believe it or not. You know what makes that not possible? Competition. Keep secrets of the trade, and rating other artists and deciding who deserves to be shared with and who doesn't... or making people pay for your information is the same as globalization and unless your selling your own putty or glue it's exactly what she called it, a recipie....art is about collaboration. See how not worried she is about teaching you how to make paper clay...see how she encourages you to try something new and let's you know what other artists have shared with her? News flash, mass production wouldnt make these with this formula...so I dont see the danger in collaborating as artists....I think I have a problem with young artists thinking there is some benefit from not sharing with others... it's not generous its human.

There are quite a few names for it, and if you go to a DIY store and ask for it using the 'wrong' name, you get a blank look from the younger clerks. It sometimes takes a few tries before they'll point you in the right direction. In addition to drywall it's also called plasterboard, (as you know), and Sheetrock.There are even some I'd never heard of, before doing a fast Google search just now: wallboard, gypsum board, buster board, custard board, or gypsum panel. Wow! You just opened up another avenue for my work! Thank you. FYI: Years ago I did a large paper mache project with Elmers and white flour. Over the years little bugs bored little holes into it. Not sure if I could have prevented that by varnishing, but I’m wondering if other people have experienced that problem. Suggestions to avoid that, without removing the flour?

@@theangriestcatintheworld Any mask should work, as long as the area for breathing has a material or a few layers of material that you can't blow out a lighter with when wearing, it will be COVID safe. So just put that type of fabric in around the nose area when the paper clay is still wet and you are golden. Remember that the fabric isn't COVID safe if you can blow out a lighter through the fabric. You can also test it with a very fine mist through sunlight(spray a very fine mist through the side that your face is on going outwards through a stream of sunlight). If any mist goes through, then the material is bad. Get a material that the fine mist will not go through.

I have made this recipe using lime or calcium carbonate to give the precise name, instead of joint compound and it is working fine so far. Made it about a week ago. You can make a paste of the lime beforehand that mimics the texture of the joint compound and then add it to the recipe but I think if someone became proficient at the recipe they could just add dry lime and water straight into the mix. Vinegar reacts with lime though so don't use vinegar in the recipe if you are using lime. I say that in case there are people out there who want to put vinegar in the recipe as a preservative. So perhaps people in other countries could use lime, aka calcium carbonate. Lime is used as plaster in some instances. I have made this comment in reply to another person but decided to make it stand alone because I wanted to add that anytime you work with ingredients like lime or cement or joint compound you should keep in mind that they are very alkaline and will dry out your hands. It is best to use gloves when using them but if you don't after you are finished you can wash and rinse your hands then slather them with vinegar to restore the pH balance to your hands.

I’m so excited to try this! I make an intentionally lumpy paper clay from egg carton, wood glue and either flour or dried red earthenware clay to imitate stone, but it’s not the most versatile thing and I sometimes have to supplement with little bits of polymer or glued on detail. It’d be nice not to have to ensure a base was bakeable so I could detail in polymer clay, and maybe use this instead!

Love this video so much and thankyou for this! im wanting to try this out for a sculpture im making however i dont own an electric mixer... could i use a hand whisk and break up the toilet paper etra fine after soaking? or can the dried paper clay be sanded after to achieve a smoother finish? thankyou :)
@UltimatePaperMacheАй бұрын
I have not tried mixing the paper mache clay without power tools, but people have told me it works. The mixer helps to distribute the paper evenly, so if you do it by hand you'll need to mix longer. You can sand it, but it dries really hard so that isn't easy. If you do sand it, be sure to wear a mask so the fine powder doesn't get in your lungs.

One Extra. Try adding a few spoonful of vinegar. Over time flour can still mold if it absorbs moisture. We've used this recipe to make helmets and armor for cosplay and they'd eventually start to develop green spots. Vinegar in the mix prevents this. Also if used for cosplay know that what you sculpt shrinks as it loses moisture and dries out. Unlike other clays this wont crack but if you dont design some wiggle room into things like helmets you may find it doesnt fit several months later before your convention. Always best to sculpt a helmet around a frame. I prefer using a hardhat suspension as it can be bought, sized to your head and by twisting the ratchet wheel stay in place or be loosened to let you take it off. This prevents helmets from sliding around on cosplayers. If it works for construction workers to keep helmets on it works for you to keep Power Ranger Helmets on.

First and foremost I want to say that you are a *magnificent* teacher. You show endless patience and empathy for every possible type of student who may be here with you seeking help. These are wonderful signs that I am in the right place. I've gotten as far as 5:25 in your video and couldn't help but stop to ask why, to save on materials cost, you haven't chosen to weigh the goopy ingredients directly into the mixing bowl itself. The supplies adhered to the measuring vessels begin to add up-including the cost of them being disposable- to the point that one could make several projects with what has been saved over the years. For those reading who don't understand what I am intending, you would find the exact weight measurement of the glue, place the empty bowl on the scale and zero out that weight then add the proper amount. Repeat this with the dry wall compound. I'm wondering if there is a reason this couldn't work.

OKAY...SUBSCRIBED!!! I had no intention of creating anything that requires this excellent invention, nor am I currently working on anything that would require it. I just clicked your video for entertainment/new skill research purposes. OMG....I was just going to babble further that my current immediate project is restoring a hand painted very fancy Moroccan side table that I recently saved from the dumpster, but IN FACT I believe it may be missing a few important embellishments that I'm sure that I can recreate and coat in your plaster to replicate what is needed. She did answer this in the video. There’s no substitute. You can make traditional paper mache without it but not the paper mache clay. The traditional paper mache requires support for all parts the piece. You can’t do things like form ears on an animal without applying paper mache to a structure shaped like ears.
