So while holding Command on Mac / Control on Windows, I click on the thumbnail to make a selection of the layer content. In the select menu I go to modify > contract. This makes it so that the selection will "shrink". Hope this helps!

@@Dreadlabs Bro, i have the same question. From 4:37 to 4:38 there is some kind of jump in the video. You add a mask using Command, then something happens, and then you use modify> contract. Perhaps in this second you press some hotkey or something else?

@@fastmustache3659 Just before the jump I converted that layer (with the layer mask on it) to a smart object. You have to select the layer, right click on it in the layer menu and then click on "Convert to Smart Object". Let me know if this was the issue!
