thanks for this. I have watched it a couple of times. This time I have saved it to a play like for inspiration later on.

So pleased to have this information. Thank you! since I am older than most I have suffered a number of injuries over the years plus a stroke in Jan so I must go from the wheel to all hand-building. I have been enjoying U tube for help in this transition. Your contribution is priceless for me.

Appreciate your response....thanks so much! Another question, why not just roll out a slab of clay to make the mold? Thanks again.....very informative!

Sorry i don't have sound and you might have said it but what did you use for release agent. At the end did you leave the clay dry in the mold?

Could you also fill a bowl like this with plaster of paris (UK - stuff like setting broken limbs in place) let to dry and drop it out? Cheap mold.

plaster tends to expand a bit as it dries so the bowl may have to be sacrificed to get it out, or use a plastic one

WOW, I was thinking as you get to that final bit of shaping, I wonder if a wooden 3-4" sphere would work great by rolling it around in the inside of the bowl to ensure an even connection or fill if you will. When creating the mold.

And then what happens next? I assume you just bisque it and use it as a mold afterwards?

thank you for your video! do you cover your clay in plastic? I am somewhat new to ceramics. when. I first began I made the mistake of putting a large piece in front of a fan which clearly cracked horribly. now I am drying pieces in bags for a week and then opening the bag. maybe that's a bit too much. any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

You can use a dry-cleaning bag over your work. Dry-cleaning bags have tiny holes in them to allow cloths to breath, so this is the perfect choice for drying clay slowly (use single layer of plastic). Just leave it on for a couple of days then remove it

What kind of clay do you use? Any high grog clay?

+sunnydaze69 She said: Standard Ceramic clay called: Sculpture clay, which is very dense, with a lot of grog (it is actually ground up fire clay, not sand), and is very heavy. I made mine with Standard Ceramic earthenware, white low fire clay, number 105. I used the largest - 14" - sturdy plastic bowl I found in a Dollar Store, which is really deep, like a deep punch bowl, for $5. I noticed that they also have a wider sturdy bow, which is not as deep). I plan to bisque fire it at cone 04. I believe that it will be a good hump/slump mold since I made a smaller one this way, and it serves me pretty well. If and when I get tired of it - I would be able to use it as a nice size bowl, which I will decorate inside and out. Have fun.

It's only 3/4 of the process! No video of removing the leatherhard form and addressing any needs and then instructions for proper drying. The circle, I felt, was not closed (or ho! no pun intended there!). Otherwise, it was a very useful video.

Sorry, but this process seems strange and completely unnecessary to me. Why wouldn’t you simply roll a slab to the thickness you prefer and place it in the bowl? It not only would have a consistent thickness, but it would be a LOT faster and neater, with less cracks and imperfections to deal with.
The most important tool in my pottery studio.
