How to make a Kilt (Part 1)

Having made traditional and utility kills. Along with the waist measurement, it’s very important to get the hip measurement as well. Also, it just as important to get the “Fell” measurement. The measurement from the waist to the hip. This facilitates the kilt sitting properly on the body and allows the pleats to drape straight down. If one chooses to pleat the kilt traditionally the knife pleats are counter in clockwise. The apron of a traditional kilt is constructed with an A frame. It’s drapes nicely on the body. Also, to eliminate excess bulk in the back of kilt, the pleats from the waste to the fell line are trimmed away, leaving 1/2-3:4 inches remaining. The excess removed lightens the kilt, allows comfort and doesn’t interfere with actual waste measurement. There’s much more techniques that can be used. I enjoyed watching your video. The Aprons (panels) is traditionally measured from outside hip bone to outside opposite hipbone.

I would add additional fabric at each end to account for a hem down the side of the aprons.

I had to measure my kilt waist and subtract 2". My kilt would slide down a little if I kept my measurement for the kilt waist.
