Abbi Berta of The Bead Place shows how to make a knotted wire-wrapped ring using 20 ga. annealed copper wire. This ring design looks like knit stitches and would make the perfect gift for the yarn lover in your life. The wire knots are inspired by Celtic designs and would be perfect for St. Patrick’s day! All tools and materials can be found at www.beadplace.net.

Wonderful video and what a very pretty young lady you are. From trial and error as a person that had carpal surgery on both wrists I learned that you do not have to start the knots at the bottom for extra pulling but that you can start then right under the previous knot. A crimping tool also works great for tucking those wires after cutting them.. (Great cleaner for copper) I work mainly with copper and it turns like silver does..I use 1/2 cup white vinegar and a tablespoon of salt, stir then drop your piece in and viola ! Almost instantly a new penny shine and if you have glass beads or stones it also sanitizes them..then just rinse and dry well. The long pieces that you are cutting off make great french ear wires also...Thank you for your demonstration.

@kimbain4368
@kimbain4368 4 жыл бұрын
I'm only about 7 minutes in so you may address this later in the video and, if so, I'm sorry for being preemptive. But I'll ask now before I forget. Have you tried making this with a softer wire and then work-hardening after the knots are made? Maybe just with a leather mallet so as not to flatten the work too much? I'm just wondering if there is a work-around for those of us with way less hand strength, and, well just overall strength? I know that the two pliers technique is effective, but even that maneuver requires a fair amount of pulling strength.
@AbbiBerta
@AbbiBerta 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim! I did explain in the video that this is fully annealed wire. That means it is very soft. It’s only 20 ga. so it’s pretty easy to work with. I usually do the knots with just my hands with no problems. I show using the pliers to pull the tail ends in the video as just an option for folks who don’t have much strength in their hands however most of my students have been able to easily work this project without additional assistance. As the wire is knotted it work hardens enough that hammering or tumbling isn’t necessary. I’ve yet to have anyone need it, but if the wire work hardens too much while it is being worked, and it just gets too hard to bend, you can always go back in and anneal it to soften it back to its original state. Hope this helps!

Love the pretty design. You do beautiful work. But will it turn your finger green? Is there something you can coat it with to prevent that? Did you know you can crochet wire?
@AbbiBerta
@AbbiBerta 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It could turn your finger green if you have acidic skin and if you don’t coat it. You could use a clear coat of something over the top of it or Ren Wax. I did know that, thanks! We actually teach wire crochet classes here at our store. Our instructor, Jenni Swartz is pretty famous for it and we’re so lucky to have her.

where do you buy your polish pads?
@gjk540
@gjk540 3 жыл бұрын
Just an FYI... Pro Polish Pads do not remove scratches or tool marks. All you are doing is giving them a nice shine so they're not as visible. To remove marks in your metal, use a Dremel with successively finer grits of sandpaper--then give your piece a nice polish. Pretty ring, BTW. I made it in sterling and love it.
@AbbiBerta
@AbbiBerta 3 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. I’ve used them many times to actually remove surface scratches and tool marks from my projects as have hundreds of my students. They’re a “micro buffer” and have micro-abrasives which help to gradually remove the top layer of metal, much like how a Magic Eraser works. When you use them enough, you can actually see the metal you’ve buffed off appear on the pad! For deeper scratches, yes, I agree, a dremel tool would be best because it would be faster, but for very small surface scratches, I’m happy to use a buffing pad. I’m glad to hear you made the design and I bet your ring is absolutely gorgeous in Sterling! Thanks so much for your insight and for watching and sharing! 💕

Hi Abbi, how do you burn it exactly? Thank you
@AbbiBerta
@AbbiBerta 4 жыл бұрын
It's a process called annealing. Basically you heat it until it glows red which realigns the metal molecules into a more flexible structure. I'll consider doing an in depth video on annealing in the future. It's definitely one of my favorite metal processes.
