TIPS & TRICKS!
1. Mask off your knife with tape to give your knife a tiny bit of room within the sheath. I use 1-3 layers of tape depending on the finish the knife has. 1 for knives that won't show scratches or scuffs easily (low grit satin) or 3 for something like a stonewashed finish.
2. You'll want to use .080 Kydex for this size knife. If it's smaller you can probably get away with the .060 stuff but then you'll need different sized eyelets. The .080 and #8-8 eyelets are pretty standard.
3. I made my press using the black PVC foam, some scrap wood, and a couple of hinges. I don't plan on making a knife that needs a sheath longer than 8" so I cut down a 12"x8" piece of foam into two 6"x8" which works perfectly.
4. To bind the sheath, belt clip, finishing washers, rubber spacer, and a single layer of .060 carbon fiber, I used the #8 (1/2" length) Chicago screws. To attach just the carbon fiber layer to the sheath, I used the #8 (1/4" length) Chicago screws.
5. Remember to make a pinch point on your sheaths. Somewhere where the sheath expands to allow the knife in and then "snaps" closed behind it creating the retention you need. On this knife, it was behind the heel of the blade. Remember you can use a heat gun to warm up a specific place and adjust it if needed.
6. I use the abrasive wheel to quickly smooth out the edges then go back with 400 grit sandpaper to clean everything up. You can just use 220 then 400 with the same effect.

I am a weekend warrior knife maker diving headfirst into this amazing craft. Join me as I create one of a kind knives, restore old and forgotten tools, and share fast-paced build videos of my newly acquired skills.
My goal is to entertain but also to educate and share the specific steps I take to create something. I'm by no means an expert and I don't use fancy grinders or heat treat ovens but, with enough time and effort, I think anyone can make awesome-functional knives.

Sick build! I'll have to try this. The idea of putting the carbon fiber over the essentially completed inner sheath is smart. Great idea.

I'm just getting into this Kydex stuff and this was one of the first things I wanted to try when I found out you could buy Kydex in colors other than just plain black or Olive Drab like you see on so many sheaths in so many tutorials The way I had it imagined in my head was doing the opposite, and just cutting a trim edge around the outside of where the knife is, and do the outer layer in color, and the inside in carbon fiber, but I guess this way makes way more sense Any tops for someone who has to make do with slightly more basic tools? (as in I don't have a garage/workshop to put a drill press or band saw in, I'm basically just using a heat gun to heat up the Kydex and a plank of wood and some C clamps on a table for pressure and getting.....mediocre results...)

@99echo 3 жыл бұрын
Bought it from the same place. If you care about ease of use and consistency then I'd recommend the press they have and matching die set. I just upgraded and its not only a lot more fun to work with but also keeps your rivets in better shape.

Done quite a bit of experimenting to make the most of this little guy and 6-8 tpi seems to be the best for my usage. I'm currently using a 3/8" timber wolf blade that's working great. Cheap machine, expensive blades lol
