How to make a leather holster template

If your having trouble creating a template for any kind of leatherwork, and more specifically leather holsters, then this video is just for you! As a self taught leatherworker one of my biggest struggles starting out was pattern/ template creating. I have learned so much from other videos, reasearch, trial, error, and shear frustration, I thought putting together a video for the beginner- ittermediate leather crafter detailing the process could do some good. Ive put together a series of steps that I believed helped me come up with a systematic approach to creating a good starting pattern.

Easy way to half a fraction is to double the denominater and keep the numerator

I saved your video because I am interested in starting some leather projects but I did have a difficult time finding similar videos online. You explained real well but I want to add a thumb break on mine and a stiffener but you're a video was one of the best ones I found so far thank you great job

Hey John. I don’t have a set distance I use. Every holster is slightly different. I ussually go by eye. At times I will put a belt through the actual template if I’m un sure. That ussually will tell me if I’m on track or not.

Do you make the back the same size and does that leave enough room for the pocket.

Darrell Ramsey on this style pattern yes. Because you measure the half difference of width that provides you the needed room to make the pocket once you wet mold. Hope that makes sense. Hard to explain unless you see the full process I may do a split video one day showing how we make up that difference in the molding process
