How to Make a Lion's Mane Tincture (Our Organic Mushroom Tincture Process)

As a small batch tincture maker I've experienced a number of trials and tribulations which have all contributed to the development of the tincture process I demonstrate here on our lion's mane mushrooms. To learn even more than this video covers about our mushroom tincture formulation, including all variables that go into quality tincture-making, visit my page dedicated to mushroom tincture science here: birchboys.com/...
A few key notes I touch upon:
-Not all tinctures are made equal!
-Distilled Water & Organic Cane Alcohol are the best choices for natural water / alcohol solvents in our opinion.
-Don't use vodka. I firmly distrust any notion that an effective hot water / alcohol extraction can be completed in one clean swoop via soaking an herb or mushroom in 90 proof vodka. The logic is that since this is part alcohol and part water, you just soak it and get the best of both worlds, but it is flawed, and I would not call a plant or mushroom soaked in vodka an actual tincture.
-Hot water extractions and alcohol extractions are best performed separately and then combined together at a chosen ratio.
-Brew time in hot water is critical. A high temp is good, but it is probably best not to go TOO high.
Steady pump circulation or frequent stirring can go a long way
-Your alcohol soak inputs should be the same inputs in your hot water extraction. A mushroom that has already been brewed in hot water should then serve as the material going into the alcohol soak. Once broken down by the water, it will release alcohol soluble compounds much more efficiently compared to a mushroom dried in its original state.

Hi, I noticed you did your water extract first in your video before your alcohol extract process. Most other people do the reverse order in the extract process. Can you explain. Thanks and great video.

We do it slightly different, coming bfrom a infused liquor back ground, we use sealed 5 gal buckets in cheese cloth we suspend the media to the bucket top, place in the sun and the heating from the sun extracts the media, at night it cools and the constant change of temp releases more of the media .. we place the buckets in ice water and when cool, we open the bucket carefully as we don't want the media to go into the alcohol... You lose zero streamth of the alcohol and get the highest extraction... For our hot we use large Hamilton beach coffee makers... It percolate and does a perfect job

I'm a part of a mushroom tincture page on Facebook and the admins say that putting the tinctures in hot coffee isn't an issue. I understand alcohol burns off at 173°f but doesn't it leave the beneficial compounds behind? You mentioned concern about mixing the hot water extraction with the alcohol extraction while still hot. So, I'm getting conflicting information and really hoping to hear from someone that understands the chemistry. Thank you!
@cwatkins4743
@cwatkins4743 10 ай бұрын
Good point. I think part of wanting to keep the alcohol (around 25% minimum) in the tincture concoction itself is to preserve the shelf life of the tincture. At that ratio, it can be stored and used for over a year if put in a proper container, to whereas a water extraction tincture or one with much less alcohol will not last near as long. Once a (dual extracted) tincture is put in coffee, it is consumed right away so it doesn't matter if the alcohol burns off.

Theres a potential for contamination to form under about 30% alcohol within the tincture. Glycerin can be used as a preservative and you could potentially distill the completed dual exract tincture to remive the alchohol and then add a presevative afterward

I do have a question about the process. So what if you don’t have alcohol already waiting to mix with the water soluble extract. How would you preserve it until the alcohol extract was ready? Do you see less of a benefit when doing the process in reverse? (Alcohol extract then the water extract)
@timothylongmore7325
@timothylongmore7325 Жыл бұрын
He explains this in the video. Reasoning works for him but no reason not to do it the other way around. I think it works better on the smallscale to do alcohol first. Except for chaga which I use both methods now but used to do it the way Jarret demonstraded. Over lapping batches.

Why don’t you dehydrate the mushrooms and powder the mushrooms with a coffee grinder or blender first? You can get so many more mushrooms to alcohol ratio, create more surface area, and start to break down the mushrooms..
@GarrettKopp
@GarrettKopp 2 жыл бұрын
We do dehydrate them, and actually we do grind all the others before brewing, but I have learned that lion's mane in particular gets so extremely fine that it becomes an incredible mess when it comes to straining. The greater surface area definitely allows it to extract faster... But this is a personal preference for me when it comes to lions mane specifically. Hard to explain... I should make a new tincture video on my Chaga process

I suspect more could be gained from the whole organism. The cognitive benefits your product boasts are similar to what recent literature on the subject suggests are possible. Except those studies emphasize that you do not get the benefits of hericenones (in the fruit) unless you also ingest the erinacines (present in the mycelium) at the same time. Your process skips erinacines extraction completely. I'm not saying there aren't benefits to your extract. But the process could be improved and added onto. I also am suspicious of the 72 hour water simmer at 150°F, as it sounds like both of these compounds begin degrading at 150°F.

@Gvidas28

Alcohol cannot penetrate chitin(mushroom cell wall) but hot water with pressure will break down chitin and then alcohol extraction can do it's work

@@Gvidas28 How do you know that? Can you provide references. I’m quite sure that the medicinal properties of these mushrooms are amazing but in my research I am finding a complete lack of standardization. Everybody seems to know a little bit of something but it’s always a little bit different and nothing seems to be agreed-upon in totality. I guess medicinal mushrooms are still in the wild west categorization of medicinal substances.
