As a small batch tincture maker I've experienced a number of trials and tribulations which have all contributed to the development of the tincture process I demonstrate here on our lion's mane mushrooms. A few key notes I touch upon:
-Not all tinctures are made equal!
-Distilled Water & Organic Cane Alcohol are the best choices for natural water / alcohol solvents in our opinion.
-Don't use vodka. I firmly distrust any notion that an effective hot water / alcohol extraction can be completed in one clean swoop via soaking an herb or mushroom in 90 proof vodka. The logic is that since this is part alcohol and part water, you just soak it and get the best of both worlds, but it is flawed, and I would not call a plant or mushroom soaked in vodka an actual tincture.
-Hot water extractions and alcohol extractions are best performed separately and then combined together at a chosen ratio.
-Brew time in hot water is critical. A high temp is good, but it is probably best not to go TOO high.
Steady pump circulation or frequent stirring can go a long way
-Your alcohol soak inputs should be the same inputs in your hot water extraction. A mushroom that has already been brewed in hot water should then serve as the material going into the alcohol soak. Once broken down by the water, it will release alcohol soluble compounds much more efficiently compared to a mushroom dried in its original state.
