I have 2 living walls exactly like this. They are hell to water when you plant directly into the felt pockets. The felt dries out the soil super fast, and you end up watering every 2-3 days. It looks beautiful though. I highly recommend putting the plants in nursery pots and then hiding them in the pockets. That way you can just pull the plants out to water and then back in the pockets they go. Also watering in the felt is super messy as the water runs right though and drips everywhere. I ended up installing a trough underneath to catch the runoff and protect my floors. So worth it though! LOVE LOVE LOVE my living walls!

That's a fantastic tip! Would make it easier to switch out plants as they outgrow the wall to I think.
@KittCatPhoto
@KittCatPhoto 4 жыл бұрын
@@katherinelandreth2191 It does! The plants grow so fast, that every 6 months I'm basically popping out a plant and adding in some cuttings from other plants. It also makes it easier to deal with any pests as I can wash and treat them when watering. My plant walls are a lot of work, but I love them, so it's definitely worth it. :)

I had a great time on my week off, but it's good to be back! Enjoy the video and have a great weekend SerpaSquad! EDIT 1: Let me know if you thought the cost breakdown was helpful. I can do it for future DIY builds (when applicable) if you did. EDIT 2: Also the plant I referred to as Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Jade') is actually a Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil'. The plant card erroniously identified the plant and I didn't check it. My bad!

A watering hack for something like this: Place a small cutting of nopal or aloe within the root-ball of each plant, with the gel of the cactus exposed. This gel will naturally absorb and retain water within the soil for FAR LONGER periods of time than any pre-made mixture. Your plants can feed off of the gel, as it works to retain water. To ensure the cactus wont regrow itself, just mash it up a bit before adding it into the soil - they're pretty resilient and can re-root if you don't. This hack is used in Mexican orchards when growing tree saplings in the hot/dry climate. It minimizes water expenses and just improves the overall vitality of the main plant.

Quick safety tip when using the push stick on the table saw. Always push on the piece that is against the fence, the the piece that is getting cut off. Pushing this piece can close the kerf, causing it to pinch on the blade and kickback. Great build, I might try this one.

Given the state of the plant market right now, 147$USD for plants isn`t too bad given how many there are! People are paying more than 10 times that amount for unrooted, leafless node cuttings of rare aroids right now. Something I always appreciate about the projects on your channel is that they use accessible, classic plants and makes them look like a million bucks, even if you can still snag them for a lot less.

I love this!! Our neighbor's deck sits higher than ours so they can look right over the privacy fence onto our deck. I showed my husband this video, I think a living wall would be perfect to put on that end of the covered portion of the deck. Plus I wouldn't have to worry about it being waterproof. I'm not sure how I would acct for cold weather though. It would be a mess having to bring all of those plants in!! We'll see. I love this though!!

I imagine an Amazon or Congo corner of my aquarium room, with appropriate plant walls where possible. I also noticed several interesting books on aquatic and tropical plants on a shelf with small terrariums in one of your videos. You could use some outdoor gutterline on the bottom for overflow. You would need it if you also add a drip system for watering. Maybe a basin with a pump to recycle the water that syphons off? You could add a timer to control how often the pump runs. Just some ideas to improve the build.

You could grow cuttings and make the pockets your self, which would already halfen the price. And if you have a big garden you could make your own soil. Also you could add an dripper hose with a coppling (maybe for bigger walls or garden walls that are hanging outside). Sometimes they use a ledge on the bottom filled with water, that is sucked up by jute keeping the hole moistered. Love it :)

Came here to say this. The term "Pothos" is really a mess, and is used to describe species of epipremnum, scindapsus and philodendron even though none of them are the same genus as each other, or a true pothos for that matter. They are all very similar in terms of care and growth habit though, and they all look great!

I'm going to make a sedum rooting rack - but from all free/leftover parts - except some new sterile medium. An old drawer, and cuttings from my own garden. I'd NEVER hang this on a wall - as that will get wet and moldy. We also have a Pallet fence for the Chicken corral so that can display plants which are safe for the chickens...like grapevines which are still rooting. The crazy critters love grapes.

Firstly, welcome back Tanner. This is awesome! Another point I think a lot of us will no doubt keep in mind is that we can use a lot of plants we already have, from propagation and cuttings etc. I'd bet a select few of us could make a living plant wall just from plants we already have and it would turn out great. And I might just have to do this! I kept looking at the time of the video remaining and anxiously thinking "when is the ficus pumila quercifolia going to be added?!" As always, looking forward to the next video and thank you for the continued inspiration for my own projects.

Glad you liked it! I would have loved to include the ficus, but I don't even buy it anymore. I have a dedicated propagation bin just for these days 😂

@@SerpaDesign I hope that comment sticks with you and every time you pass a glance at it you are tempted to throw a bit in there haha Any chance a few cutting could be shipped over to me in the UK? haha I can't be entirely satisfied with my mourning gecko tanks without it haha!

When it comes to plant walls the most cost effective I have found is using pothos. You can get big ones and break them up into thirds. It is expensive. I think my plant wall is around 500 with 40 plants.

@@beauar1 or you could buy a small pothos and take some cuttings when it’s growing well and just propagate those

This is great! Thank you for posting it. I recently adopted a kitten and he LOVES to play in my potted house plants and they're getting trampled. Hopefully something like this will help me save my plants.

I have an open chameleon enclosure currently and I’m thinking about doing something exactly like this until I find a little guy to call it home! Of course I’ll have to be particular with my choice of plants but this was wonderful inspiration! Thank you!

That's definitely what I'll do if I do it again. I was going to add a dripwall to this one, but I thought it would over complicate the build.

An Amazing Synchronicity here is that I will have a left over piece of similar board to this as I build out my van. I initially thought of an acrylic terrarium but this may also come into the creation. Cheers for the great stuff & inspiration.
