I have 2 living walls exactly like this. They are hell to water when you plant directly into the felt pockets. The felt dries out the soil super fast, and you end up watering every 2-3 days. It looks beautiful though. I highly recommend putting the plants in nursery pots and then hiding them in the pockets. That way you can just pull the plants out to water and then back in the pockets they go. Also watering in the felt is super messy as the water runs right though and drips everywhere. I ended up installing a trough underneath to catch the runoff and protect my floors. So worth it though! LOVE LOVE LOVE my living walls!

That's a fantastic tip! Would make it easier to switch out plants as they outgrow the wall to I think.
@KittCatPhoto4 жыл бұрын
@@katherinelandreth2191 It does! The plants grow so fast, that every 6 months I'm basically popping out a plant and adding in some cuttings from other plants. It also makes it easier to deal with any pests as I can wash and treat them when watering. My plant walls are a lot of work, but I love them, so it's definitely worth it. :)

A watering hack for something like this: Place a small cutting of nopal or aloe within the root-ball of each plant, with the gel of the cactus exposed. This gel will naturally absorb and retain water within the soil for FAR LONGER periods of time than any pre-made mixture. Your plants can feed off of the gel, as it works to retain water. To ensure the cactus wont regrow itself, just mash it up a bit before adding it into the soil - they're pretty resilient and can re-root if you don't. This hack is used in Mexican orchards when growing tree saplings in the hot/dry climate. It minimizes water expenses and just improves the overall vitality of the main plant.

You could use some outdoor gutterline on the bottom for overflow. You would need it if you also add a drip system for watering. Maybe a basin with a pump to recycle the water that syphons off? You could add a timer to control how often the pump runs. Just some ideas to improve the build.

You could grow cuttings and make the pockets your self, which would already halfen the price. And if you have a big garden you could make your own soil. Also you could add an dripper hose with a coppling (maybe for bigger walls or garden walls that are hanging outside). Sometimes they use a ledge on the bottom filled with water, that is sucked up by jute keeping the hole moistered. Love it :)

An Amazing Synchronicity here is that I will have a left over piece of similar board to this as I build out my van. I initially thought of an acrylic terrarium but this may also come into the creation. Cheers for the great stuff & inspiration.

I love the infomercial style of showcasing individual parts and total price. Had me laughing for a sec!

Thanks for breaking everything down! I've been wanting to make something like that for a long time. It looks fantastic! Another one with edible plants would be really neat!
