I've read the comments about artist's & business. I have rarely met an artist who likes to paint commissions. I do. But, I have a 5 page contract, spells it out. There is a succession of steps that need to be completed, signed off by the customer with payments when they are happy. I show them sketches, photos, discuss colors, materials, delivery dates. And, I deliver on time. While I am painting, I have a clear goal and I know this painting is sold. The customer loves it. What can be better? And when I explain this method to a fellow artist, they cross their arms. Why? Because accountability goes both ways when there is a contract.

@@eliphase09_art I looked at your beautiful artwork, and I can see where it could be challenging with a commission. Realism, and maybe a portrait! Most of us cannot agree on what is real to begin with. If you are an artist who can draw what you see, then share a sketch that will be almost there, say your art will be within 10% of that target. They need to sign it, or agree in writing in text or email. If not, try to fix it. If not be willing to walk away. I've had the customer from hell and I have paid my dues. It is our responsibility to not lose control of the sale. These people want to be your customer, help them have a great experience buying from you.

I was thinking the same thing about contracts? So do you interview the client? How long does that take? Thanks. I would never do it without a thorough investigation. THat way I don't have to think and worry so much through the process

@@joelhenry4643 Most of my commissions are after the client likes my work, but did not find the exact fit. My interview is simply finding the exact thing they are looking for by brainstorming with them. They may be hesitant because they don't know if you can make the art they want. You have to offer it. Then I send sketches of the future art, they pick the size. If I can, I get a photo of where they will hang, then I photoshop my sketch in place. Sometimes they just hold their phone in front of where they want the art to go. My contract spells out subject matter, size, materials, process, timing, and payments. I know how long it takes me, I give myself an extra week just in case. Deliver early, never make excuses. They will love you.

In my experience as an Artist. Whenever I try to make Artwork to sell it never works. When I just do my own thing art that just flows from me . They are the Artworks that people want. I've also developed my own system of painting and I have absolutely no idea beforehand of what the outcome will be before I start . It's like an adventure.

The only time I ever sell work is if people specifically commission me to paint something they want. Very rarely does anyone actually buy something I created for myself. It sucks.

@@Fiveash-Art I think a Fifty Fifty approach might help you. When you show your artwork. Show some of the ones you usually can sell but keep gradually introducing your more personal stuff. There is an audience for everything you just have to find it. It might be just one person who wants everything you produce. So never give up. Plus like I said whenever I make something to sell it doesn't sell . So maybe try just showing your work without price tags and expectations of selling it. Hope you are successful.

@@johntaylor6211 I'm 50 years old .. Been doing it for a long time. I always show my personal work, and I always advertise my portrait commissions. I tend to get more responses and reactions from my personal work, but the phone calls come in for the portrait commissions. I show everything.. people seem to like looking at my surreal stuff .. but they don't want to buy it. Galleries reject it because it's too 'traditional' 😂 and people don't want to buy them because they're 'too weird'. At least that's what I've gathered over the years of doing this stuff. It's fine though, when I'm not painting people's kids, dogs and kitty cats, .. I can stew in my own goofy fantasies. I've sold a few on occasion .. I just wish I could sell more of them. They pile up .. I'd be happier if they were hanging on someone else's wall.

Heres an advice for artist: find a partner who would run the business side, while you just focus on painting what you love and then commercial painting. The mistake most people make is they try to do everything on there own, and i am so damn sure artist are very self motivated which means they would be very independent. So find someone who understands the business side, while you just focus on the art side.

Artists are usually pretty reluctant to embrace business. It requires a different mindset. However, many artists want the freedom that making money provides, so you either embrace the mindset or continue to struggle. I think this is an excellent video. Much to consider. Great ideas. No we artists aren't reluctant to anything, we just do not have the time to do the art of marketing! Marketing is a field that requires as much time as becoming a master in art! We only have one life not two! If we choose marketing our art becomes a cheap average product that is low quality art. Anyways AI will replace gallerists or anyone anyways because the public doesn't understand the value of the artists story behind the artworks. You will struggle no matter what you do because artists unlike doctors do not have unions so they do not even have legal power of any kind! Nobody protects all artists, only galleries protect the artists they represent who sell to wealthy millionaires. The idea she is selling here, is not a reality for most artists for a reason. Every day there are more teachers of art online and many do not make a penny! To compete in the market on you tube is as hard as competing anywhere else. I agree with her making videos, is the best shot but making great quality with real creativity that are substantial and that not only add value, but that people love to watch, is not a simple recipe! Stop saying artists do not want to work hard in the business area because that is exactly how they survive out of their own industry that is absolutely exclusive since the times of Michelangelo!

Spent all my time painting things I cared nothing about when I started doing commission work. I started off as a Wildlife artist selling my art while I was still in high school, ended up painting pictures of houses, barns and old cars and doing portrait drawings. I got way to burnt out! That was almost 7 years ago. Now I do what I like to do, I have discovered new ways to keep my art exciting. I am considering her advice. I no-longer sell any of my work because I have been painting and creating art since the 1980s and had nothing but photos left to look back at. I spend most of my time exploring the arts, like statuary & sculpture, carving, mold making & casting and of course painting. I am 100% self-taught and I learn something new every day and that is truly what keeps me excited about the art. I regret never studying under one of the great wildlife artists by taking weeklong classes when they were offered. You Tube is the best place to get art knowledge if you do not want to take classes. I am now 60 and I really enjoy the arts more than ever.

I am now 73 yrs. With 3-4 generations of artists. Musicians at least 6.

Me too! I went to college as an art major in the early eighties and then turned around and got into the medical sciences and that's where my focus remains. But I would still paint. And people liked my work and I would sell it all the time and back then we had no way to really record our art digitally like we can today and that's where I think I want to pick up my paint brushes again, I can make the original and from there I have options, digital options! Back in the day I lived on a dairy farm, and when we had a cow passed away we would you know just drag it out to a canyon in one of our pastures. My husband and I would go out there on a four-wheeler and find skulls, I would take them home and clean them and get the gesso them and start painting and I would sell those skulls 17:17 for $300 a piece, I had a horseshoeing client who gave me a raccoon skull she found in a sandbar in a river on her property and we cleaned that up and painted it and it went to an art show and got honorable mention and it sold for around $100 it was matted and framed to believe it or not - I'm interested in abstract art now, and I want to learn how to use an airbrush, liquid acrylic paint and tape - that would be the latest new frontier for me!

The issue I see with this is that it simply perpetuates the current broken paradigm. This is great if you want to sell your soul for a buck and be like everybody else. Otherwise, take the potential loss in revenue and do it the right way: Be a real artist and try to get more actual art into the world. I'm in the music production world and the same thing applies there: More people trying to sell you courses and clicks/likes on YT than they are putting out great music into the world.

The entire point is that you can make more money EASIER while still creating the same art you would have regardless. I don’t see why people are offended by that, other than people don’t like being called out for doing the same things repeatedly like commissions and trying to sell paintings online, which as she said, very rarely is stable.

All good points. Sounds like some of the best ways to make money creating art, is to educate others doing KZbin content or creating online courses. Doing 1 on 1 client custom paintings can add some extra revenue, but this can be inconsistent. Etsy might be a good way to sell artwork as prints or digital downloads, or original custom work, but again only volume sales work to make it a full time income. I think an artist these days needs multiple revenue streams, including perhaps gallery showings for original art, or a deal with a local gallery to split the sale prices. However, a successful KZbin channel and selling online courses might be all a person needs for a full-time income teaching art, along with affiliate income recommending art supplies on Amazon linked to the channel. Once a channel is monetized, Amazon will pay 4% for linked sales from a channel.

Thank you for this video!! I really needed it. As an artist, it can be difficult, especially when you don't have connections or know others. I sometimes feel just trapped in a bubble, always researching how to get my art out there, posting here on KZbin, and other platforms, creating my own shop, etc. Then once I put it out, it's crickets. It sucks, but at the end of the day I love what I do and I keep doing it. I know that one day, it will all pay off for me so I just keep going. Lovely video, very helpful. I love your sense of humor! I consider myself an artist, though, I haven't drawn in a while. When I was younger, drawing (usually in ink) was my absolute obsession! I went through stacks of paper, weekly. I sold handmade greeting cards, and did custom art & poetry for people. As a child, I also did other craft work, like sewing & jewelry repair. Sometimes, I got paid like, $300 in a single weekend, which, for a kid, made me feel like I was rolling in moolah!! My money disappeared quickly, though as my family was often strapped for cash. As an adult, I make jewelry for sale in my Etsy Shop. I love making jewelry, but hate the business side of things. It's just not in my wheel house at all. So, for me, the shine has worn off of selling jewelry. My latest obsession is writing, especially songwriting, which I've been doing since 2010. And THAT is where I found inspiration in your video. Weird, right?! I think it's applicable, though. I could do songwriting classes, videos, etc. I don't have a great voice or play an instrument, and even for those who do, many musical/vocal artists don't make tons of money. Additional income streams are always welcome! I'm no songwriting expert, surely, but, if sharing my story and lyrical journey with someone else would help them... AND help me pay the bills, I don't really see a downside.

Personally right now in my journey I enjoy custom paintings because its allowing me to explore what I can do with ideas people give me. A sort of starting point to get me going. It also keeps me accountable to finish something in a timely manner if its for someone else, especially someone specific that I made a commitment to. I can definitely see why some artists dont like it though! I love working on my own stuff too. Im just not to the stage yet where I hate commissions :)

Since you mentioned the Klondike and the shovel… there is an excellent book called “The Klondike” by Pierre Berton. In this book, the author talks about “mining the miner”, where in fact, those who got rich during the gold rush, were the merchants and service providers, not the gold prospectors. Agreed - I hate doing custom work, more so in portraits, tedious and doesn't pay great, plus the client always picks at the small part of expression. Illustration custom work isn't so bad but they don't come round very often.

It's interesting how divided different artist are w/in the community in how to make money. I follow one artist that insists just selling your art is the best way to make a living- but you need to market yourself properly and find buyers. You make a good point that while that's all well and good, there's always going to be a cap with how much you can earn. I think that's one thing I was missing in my back and forth uncertainty in knowing what path to take- is that selling my art alone will always have a ceiling- and can be quite exhausting in ways that doing courses and youtube aren't as much. Thank you for the insight, it helped me a lot!

I just stumbled upon your channel Kayla and glad I did. As a self learning artist with some help from professors at college. I've been trying to saveup enough paintings of mine to make my first official art book in the upcoming future. my goal is to come up with atl east 100 paintings for it. Of doing a bit of abstract painting and environment paintings past two years now counting from my start of learning from school in 2022. I have never stopped painting acrylics ever since and proud of my achievement thus far. I must admit I do truly love your advice you have given in this vdeio as a self learning artist. Been experimenting with my channel on n off for years. I do believe now I got ideas on where I wanna take it in the direction I like it to go now this year. Combininbg painting with the fun power of improv since I also love doing improv as well on the side. I think combining both passions of mine would make my channel a unique channel. I also liked how ya tackled the topics and tips. Thanks so much. I should also probably practice up my css/html skills of coding to comeup with a unique site for my paintings as well. :)
