Awesome video! I just made 8 of these in a matter of minutes.I did not use the special tool though, I used a set of linesman pliers with a crimper and it held nice and tight. I purchased the material from a local hardware store and most likely paid to much but I just wanted to try and it cost $ 16.44! Thank's again for a very informative video.

This worked well, I caught my groundhog with the snare. Attached a rope to the snare and pulled him out through a Haveaheart trap to hold him. He now has a nice riverfront view about 20 miles from here. The lock held him tight and I had to remove the snare using coat hanger wire by pulling on the penny, then working around the head.

Great video, best use of a penny I've seen in years. This can also be done with stainless plate, for those wrongly screaming about 'it's illegal to mutilate a penny' (which it is not, unless you are counterfeiting). If you have any issues related to the penny, quote them 18 USC 331 as it was actually written. It is an anti-counterfeiting law, to stop people from bleaching paper or re-striking coins. When you use a coin or a bill for 'art, a tool, or other non-currency uses', it is NOT protected under 18 USC 331. There have been various reviews of the old 'penny roller' device (used to make plate-jewelry), and it is still sold in America (much safer than putting a penny on the railroad tracks).

Just because a company sells a tool that will roll and flatten pennies doesn't make them or the tool legal. The same applies for many many things on the current market. It is also illegal to tint windows to a certain degree of tint but that doesn't stop companies and stores from still selling it..

little tip for removing the bur in your holes there, use a slightly larger drill bit in hand and run it over the hole should clean it up for you.

Very interesting video . That penny lock is really great . And not to nitpick but I just want to mention that snares to catch wildlife is actually legal in a lot of places. You need to follow the season rule but snares are a legal means of trapping wildlife. Many people use snares to catch fur bearers such as coyote raccoon bobcat fox ect. Still legal here in my home province- the wire needs to be a specific gauge, the loop only a certain size, and you're only supposed to snare hares.

Here in Texas we use snares mainly on hogs and coyotes. I like your method of making snares they cost around $3-$4 at the feed store. I think I will make some of your penny snares. If i don't catch a hog at least I can straighten my penny out again.

Same technique works well with a washer instead of a penny and they are very cheap to buy. I like to make my snares 10-12 feet long in case you aren't very close to something to tie off to. I also use 3/32 cable because a coyote can twist off smaller cable. I have, in fact, seen them nearly twist off the 3/32 stuff. And, by the way, if you set them right you can catch your prey species around the neck and it kills them outright. Not the most glamorous way to die but it certainly beats a body/leg catch and you don't have to kill the critter before you can remove it from the snare. In a lot of places these are legal for catching fur bearers and predators as long as they are tagged with your contact info and you have the appropriate license. Good Video bro.

I found and purchased LEHIGH brand 1/16 FERRULE & END STOP at Home Depot for less than $2 per package. Each package had 2 sets of ferrule and end stop. Although they were all aluminum the end stop works just fine. However, make sure when crimping the cable in the end stop, DON'T allow any cable to protrude through the stop..

Aww Man! A few years ago I was making some snares out of old electrical cords. My son was collecting metals to sell for a trip to see his girl. I stripped the insulation off and used the twisted copper wire to make a snare for rats around the property, I then used some 'copper pennies to make the lock...now I see you doing the same. I guess I didn't do anything new. Good video. BTW, they worked.

You can buy all this stuff- cable ferrules stops at most trapping supply shops. Just search up "the snare shop" or "pcs outdoors" and a LOT cheaper then west marine or any hardware store.

You can legaly snare most animals in North America. It is very humane if you know what your doing. keep in mind that cable snares are basically a one time use item, they tear up and kink and become unuseable most of the time after one use so pack a bunch of them. for a long term survival trap i suggest the connibear traps, they will last for years and arent all that heavy considering they will feed you and your family for such a long time, cable snares are awesome and should be included in your survival pack but dont forget to add some other types to go with them

Snares are legal in almost every state. Some states require you to only use snares. Your fancy swedge look like a tube flaring tool. You might have got ripped off on that one. A hammer or a vise would be a much better tool to use. I don't think the dead critter will care much what it looks like.
