Those #8/0 Rosco heavy barrel swivels are my “go to” for shark fishing and have made a huge difference in eliminating (yes, eliminating) twist offs in my snaring. Started with 7x7 wire but now use what’s left of that for drowners and extension wire. 1x19 is truly the way to go. Tight chains and cables MT. JJ

Hello Mr Meattrapper. For starters i want to say i absolutely love your videos and have been pretty much binge watching your videos most of this weekend. Great information and i am learning alot. I totally appreciate that push quality buying quality products and building a quality and strong setup. The only thing I would change up is using copper instead of Aluminum Nicopress sleeves. I know copper sleeves are more expensive. But in my experience Copper sleeves can take more abuse and wont crack and fail as quickly as aluminum. I have found that aluminum is ok for static weight pull and copper can handle dynamic weight pull much better. I have also always used a "go/No-go" card to check my crimps. That way its known if the crimp is good and is not under or over crimped. Unfortunately over crimped sleeves will fail just as an under crimped sleeve. I also prefer using thimbles on my loops to protect the cable eye thats made, granted it adds bulk and expense to a setup. My snare experience is not even close to yours. however I have been dealing with aircraft cable and crimping it since 2001 for use in stage and screen and have used my cables for both flying scenery on and off stage as well as for use flying people high off the ground. Thank you for your hard work on these videos and please know i have a great deal of respect for you and my comment is meant as sharing my knowledge and not as disrespect to you. Thank you again!!!!

Indeed you are right on the money with the additional snare barrel swivel! I get a little more worried about my cable snare getting kinked up and bent so I add one or two additional barrel swivels to the cable end of the snare as well. Fully agree that the old style cable terminator swivels do nothing. I see how easy that swagger is to use...still mashing my ferrals with a hammer~!

I'm curious why you put the 180 bend next to the end stop before you put the lock on? It appears that by doing this, you get a tear drop shape to the loop? It seems to me that putting the cable (at the end stop) through the lock from the other direction provides a much more rounded loop?

Very thorough and helpful! I am just beginning to explore snaring and your advice is invaluable. In Minnesota we are required to use a breakaway device on all our snares. I purchased a few j-hooks with the proper weight limit but am unsure on how to incorporate that into my snares. Can you demonstrate or refer me to a site that can teach me the correct method using j-hook breakaway devices? Thank you in advance.

@TalksWithRyan

Ever thought about using split rings to hook your snare to the extension cable that way you can pop off the used snare and hook up a new one and just keep using your extension over and over . Shouldn’t be much wear on the extension I wouldn’t imagine at least for coyotes . By the way great job well explained Tim

Thats a good question. Since videos became popular, books have really stopped being written. Two of the better snaring books are Master Raccoon Snaring by Newt Sterling and Modern Snaring by Dave Dezarn. Both are quite old, but solid information. You can also check out my playlist "Snare School" which has a lot of information.

@@Meattrapper Thanks so much for getting back to me. Actually, as it turns out, my question is mute. Minnesota requires j-hooks or equivalent on all snares. So clipping off the deer lock will eliminate the redundancy. Thanks again. Your advice is highly valued.

if you're using that terminal swivel to connect to a tree, doesn't it loose it's swivel ability???
@Northwoods208

Depends how you attach it. If you thread the cable through the swivel to create an anchor loop, yes it loses the swiveling. If you use an extension to anchor, or #11 wire, then the swivel is free to swivel
