For those curious theres folks on YT that make solid fuel blocks using old coffee grounds mixed with sawdust. You just gotta wet it, mix it, and can press it with a simple homemade lever. No oven, no other additives, just some elbow grease and a rack for them to finish drying on. They burn very well and if you end up not needing them just resoak in water snd dump into your compost

"entirely made of used coffee grounds" - you mean apart from the huge amount of wax and molasses that you have to buy?

Cheaper in the long run instead of buying coffee logs…

Who cares Lamo. I made dinner at the same time as a coffee log. 180 degrees for 30 mins and I had a toasty fire and dinner. Treacle is cheap, as is wax. Kiln dried logs are £15 a bag and that for about 2-3kg if your lucky. I tried this and the coffee log burned for ages. Plus I can use the beans for heating and compost.

Screw the molasses just use the wax and have a coffee log made “entirely” of “literally” spent coffee.

Surely not the most sustainable option if it needs an hour in the oven and other manufactured ingredients?

I’m thinking of doing this. But I will bake them when I’m cooking a roast in the oven to make it cost effective

Not sure that's recommended if you're baking paraffin wax in there. Could poison your food

Interesting to work out the energy required to dry the coffee and melt the wax versus the heat extracted from burning the logs! Probably more ecological to bin the grounds and use the energy to heat your home or bbq etc

Ecological but still the coffee grounds end in landfill so not ideal

You can air dry coffee grounds. I tap mine out onto kitchen paper and it's usually bone dry by the following morning. From what I've read, people seem to use their ovens for drying/binding purposes whilst it's already being used for cooking purposes.

I suppose you just put it in when you have the oven on anyway.

For those moaning about the entry used in the oven. I made 6 logs in one go and made dinner at the same time. I used sugar I bought in bulk at Costco(which is no different than what I normally buy) and used £1 shop tea lights and some ikea ones I had lying around. My wife and I drink a lot of coffee, so this is scream use for us. Also the log burned for quite a long time so I was happy with it. Smelt great too. No it’s not going to knock of £100 off my energy bill but it’s a novel use for the coffee grinds.

I guarantee this is much more expensive than just buying fire logs, especially where I live. At the store, I can get like 10 logs for $5. At local houses, I can get a 5x5 container filled past the brim, for $40. I'd rather just put the coffee grounds in my bokashi bucket and make compost in a few weeks.

We don't all have access to wood....let alone cheap wood.
@DickWigglin
@DickWigglin Жыл бұрын
@@zoe9632 I'm not sure where you live, but if you can't find firewood, you aren't looking hard enough. Most lumber/home improvement stores sell fire logs, even in bulk. Many grocery stores sell fire logs, you can buy them online, you can get them for free from sites like Craigslist, etc. There are many ways to get firewood, so if you genuinely believe you don't have access to firewood, you aren't looking hard enough.

I agree with you regarding the cost to make these coffee logs, and also the time taken to do it however, the logs where I am are £6-7 a net of 7 Birtch logs. No matter what we do it's expensive and the prices are only going up.

You can also use broken Crayola Crayons or old wax candles. I used a half a cup of molasses and I am trying one without molasses but with sugar instead.

I've not tried this out for myself but as the briquettes are made using natural ingredients I'd expect that any left over residue would be biodegradable.

I was wwnt8ng to just make a few Firestarter blocks, for when i need a quick fire and i have no snap wood, or no dry snap wood. Snap wood is small diameter sticks, snapped for building fires.

Lol "Sustainable" actually has a definition. Couple constructive tips if you want to use that definition here: -Use waste fat instead of ordering wax. Lot's of reasons here but ... -Heat the "brick" on the wood stove instead of the oven.

This is absurd. Why introduce pollution into the equation by baking, when you can mix with sawdust and water and let them dry instead? How incredibly wasteful.
