Also, never approach your mare form the front or back! Only approach from the sides!

This is good advice, especially when interacting with a _green_ (partially tame and partially wild) mare that does not fully trust you. Be sure not to surprise the mare. Also, letting the mare sniff your hand before you touch her will make her more comfortable, but, be careful about those teeth.
